Would someone recommend Alan Campbell's books? Of the sci-fi Deepgate Codex trilogy the first two have come out - Scar Night and Iron Angel.

He's also written a novella called Lye Street.

Any opinions?

I read the first two chapters of Scar Night, put it down, and never bothered picking it up again.

10:4. 10:4. I've been looking for some decent sci-fi, but with most books I pick up, I do exactly what you did with Scar Night.

Well, it's not really sci-fi. It's urban fantasy in the China Mieville mold. I've got nothing against Mieville, but that sort of thing isn't really what I'm into, and there was nothing in those first two chapters of Scar Night that interested me whatsoever. Well, the whole part about the city being suspended on chains above a bottomless pit was pretty neat, but none of the execution of it, or the characters or situations, grabbed me.

Alan Campbell gets mixed reviews on other boards from what I have seen. It was a book that I considered reading until I checked out some reviews. It's now a book on my "if I'm desperate" list. Nothing against Campbell, but there are other books that I would prefer to read based on word of mouth.

I would suggest the boards over at sffworld.com for some good recommendations of SF/Fantasy books.

Sweeeet. Many thanks. Both genres have been rough on my literary taste buds for the longest time.
