Call us boring and simple-minded, but before we saw the work of street artist Joshua Allen Harris we never once considered the artistic possibilities of subway exhaust. Using only tape and garbage bags, Harris creates giant inflatable animals that become animated when fastened to a sidewalk grate. In the video above, watch him do a bear, a giraffe, and one that looks not unlike the Cloverfield monster.

I have yet to see his work on the street, but I originally saw his work via this link:

That is AWESOME.

I love it when people do whimsy in the most unexpected of places.

Almost makes me have hope for the human race.

Ditto. The best street art is whimsy (with a little subtext), which is why Banksy and Shepard Fairey are so well regarded.

Heck, even something as simple as this is great:

I LOVE Banksy...I was really bummed out when I heard he was doing designs for Nike. Normally, I don't have a problem with the concept of "selling out", but for some reason, as sort of my anti-establishment hero, the thought of Banksy working for Nike was just too much. :(

My favorite Banksy piece, photo by moi!, in Brighton, England. I thought it was pretty neat that it was also featured in the movie, Children of Men.

using the steam and trash bags is so obvious that it's brilliant.

That poor polar bear!
