Listen, some of the stuff coming from DC this year, as told to me by people who know, BLEW MY MIND.

Now, I will admit right here, this stuff is not necessarily the kind of stuff that will bring new Marvel readers. I don't know. There's no way to say.

But it IS the EXACT FRICKING STUFF that makes me lose my brain waiting for it to come out.

It is THE stuff I love the best in comics.

Some of you are going to be VERY DAMN HAPPY. :)

Yeah, you changed your av!

Was that the big change that's supposed to blow our mind?

As for the new stuff, I'll take your word on it.

(Though I ask that you be a dear and give me some news on a certain Helena Bertinelli......)

I'm pretty sure she changed it tonight/this morning (depending on where you live), because I recall seeing the "old" one after she posted earlier tonight.

Really, given her current main responsibility at DC, the new avatar makes perfect sense.

Be fair. Gail isn't Bendis.

Bendis is a primary mover behind most of Marvel's current crap moves, so we always have an eye roll ready. He's got his finger in everything, so he's hardly impartial.

Gail, while she IS working on a VERY important DC property, as far as I know, isn't a primary "strategist" for her publisher outside of that property. If she comes out and says she enjoyed something (unless she's talking about one of her personal projects), I think we have to remember that she doesn't have the same ego investment. Maybe she's not totally impartial--these are the people who sign her paychecks--but its clearly not a case of her hawking her own wares. She's always got the option of saying nothing, so the fact that she's ventured an opinion means a bit more.

The last time DC tried to lure in Marvel readers we had Infinite Crisis, One Year Later etc. And while those books, in the short term increased readership, in the long run the new readers left and the old readers disgusted with the changes also left. As a result you have Marvel outright dominating DC in every conceivable area from issue sales to market shares.

And for people who don’t think that DC was trying to marlize the universe look at the facts. You had popular heroes becoming misunderstood outcasts, Omacs acting as sentenials, a popular heroin going insane, albeit briefly, and destroying the superhero community with her actions, Superheroes becoming depowered and or dropping life flies etc. It didn’t work for years ago and it’s not going to work now.

I want to believe, Lord help me with my unbelief. :)

Seriously, I hold out zero hope at this point. I've just accepted that whatever DC thinks the "market" might want in a comic is usually at odds with what I want in a book. I have no confidence in the product right now.

Amazon Attacks almost made me leave DC comics totally. Green Arrow has been lackluster for the better part of five years. Countdown was money drain without a payoff. I was a regular Flash customer since 1987, and now I haven't bought a Flash book in a year.

I could go on literally for 10 pages, but I won't. Just trying to say I have serious doubts at this point about what DC can do, or maybe will do.

I'm still buying, and faking my smile.

As long as it doesn't require encyclopedic knowledge of 52/Countdown/Final Crisis and the backstory can be wrapped up in the first few pages, I'll be willing to give these mind blowing things a shot. All I want is fun understandable comics and that I don't have to rely on 4 other titles to "get" it.

Not to get all harsh but Gail is an employee of DC Comics. I know she isn't a Geoff Johns or a Grant Morrison over there but she isn't some minor employee writing Z-list titles. At her time at DC, she has written Action Comics, JLA (Classified, which I believe was originally scheduled for the main JLA book), Teen Titans and Wonder Woman. I definitely don't see how Gail could be totally impartial in this situation. She is an employee discussing teasing things the company she works for is releasing.

This is not to say that DC does not have cool stuff coming down the pipe. I just consider the messenger when I hear something.

Think of it like this. I watched a Screwattack.com Top 10 list of the best Mario games. They mentioned the original Dr. Mario as one of the best Dr. Mario games and then mentioned how Nintendo Power had praised the puzzle game. The two pointed out that Nintendo Power naming a Nintendo game "good" isn't exactly shocking. The thing is that Dr. Mario actually is a good video game but did we really need NP to tell us that?

Guys, DC treats me fantastically well and values my input and work tremendously. We HAVE major stuff coming up, but I wanted to put everything aside to work on Wonder Woman and the Six relaunch. I can't do five books a month and do them consistently well for a long period like some writers can and these books, and Tranquility, are taking my attention and focus. When they've settled a little, I'm working on a HUGE project for DC that will be massively cool.

So let me see if I can work this out based on years of experience with Gail teasing and hinting.

It's either:

Everybody is coming back to life that has been unceremoniously slaughtered over the last couple of years and every character that has been ruined will be fixed and basically everybody is going to pretend that everything since right before War Games started never happened.

Or:

The next major DC event is a Mega-Secret Six-Wonder Woman-Birds of Prey-crossover-guest-starring-Superman plotted by Gail.

I'm good with either, really.

Little changes are ok too. When you said "this year" did you mean in the next year or by the end of this one. Because I was thinking by the end of this one and that might have been wrong.

Liberty Belle got a solo win over an A-List villain (Zoom) in JSA. She's had a lot more to do than a lot of other people in what's a crowded book so far...

Bringing everybody (and I do mean everybody) back to life would be how I'd write Final Crisis. Here's hoping Morrison does the same...

Booster ongoing becomes Booster and Beetle ongoing?

We forget the Alpha Lanterns happened? (No one should outrank Hal, Kyle, Kilowog, John, or Guy.)

Bart, Conner, Barry, Ted, Ralph, Sue, and others are discovered not dead?

Ollie and Dinah become unmarried... or magically it never happened.. Black Canary: One More Day... hmmm.

DC makes an effort to keep A talent on their books for more than 1 arc at a time.. Loeb and Lee on Batman, Simone and Dodsons on WW, and Johns and Van Sciver on GL are great but how long has Marvel had Brubaker and Epting on Captain America? Bendis and Yu on Avengers? It seems (and I could be wrong) that Marvel doesn't play musical chairs as much (I know they do some) as DC.

You know, I know sales are down and some of DC's stuff has just been dumb, but what they do well, they are doing REALLY well. I'm looking forward to whatever.

Hey, I kind of covered that with "Maybe she's not totally impartial--these are the people who sign her paychecks".

That said, being a team player isn't the same thing as going out of your way to compliment something, which is how her first post seemed to me. So my tendency is to give that a bit more weight.

I take that last part to be an extremely good sign.

I'm with the person hoping that Final Crisis ends up undoing a lot of the death and gloom of the last few years (and I think Morrison already undid Countdown...). The only reason I think it can't is that we need to have bodies in the ground for Blackest Night. But if that ends up with the dead being brought completely back to life, that could brighten the DCU a great deal--which I think absolutely has to happen.

It'll be hard to top Trinity, Geoff John's Action, or James Robinson's Superman or need I mention Gail's work on Wonder Womand and upcoming Secret 6.
Then there's the fun stuff from Johnny DC (anyone who's not reading Tiny Titans or Billy Batson is missing out on some fun stuff) and the Vertigo line
has been putting out some stuff I've really liked of late with House of Mystery and Madame Xanadu.

And while the first issue of Final Crisis frightened me off, ironically I'm still looking forward to a lot of the Final Crisis tie ins such as Legion of 3 Worlds,
and Rogue's Revenge. The Requiem One Shot was certainly worth my money.

On top of that is Batman RIP which I had my doubts about at first but I should have rememberd that outside of Alan Moore noone writes crazy better than Morrison. And then way off in the distance is Blackest Night.

I can't even imagine what Gail is talking about that is cooler than any of that stuff so I'll just wait and see.
