I just read the first trade and love it. It is both a celebration and parady of the Silver Age and perhaps a commentary on the modern state of comics. I also think Miller might be pointing fun at how others drew inspiration from the darker and grittier aspects of Dark Knight but none on the heart and soul that went into that body of work. The end resut is a funny as hell, violent over-the-top story that had me laughing for all nine chapters.
Jim Lee's visuals are breath taking. This was actually a bit of a distraction as I kept getting pulled out of the story to admire the view, but holy crap was I blown away.

I've been largely unimpressed... but then, the fact that Millar has polarized people on the work might be a testament to the work itself. I suppose if it read more intentionally, I might could see it. But as I read, I just kept seeing 300 and Sin City race across the page... in a bat suit.
Miller is stuck in his own voice on this one if you ask me.

It's an odd book. I read the first few issues and didnt think much about it, but as I've seen and heard more and more (And read the last issue with the yellow room) it seems a lot more deliberate. I get the impression that at some point Miller changed what he was doing.
Eh, some people really dig it. Good for them!

I just can't get the whole sin city and 300 thing because while yes the voice is miller if you look at his pre-sin city and 300 stuff you can see allot of the same thing to a degree in the voice BUT it's hard to look at all star batman and robin exactly in the same vein as sin city and 300 in that the superhero troups are so there maybe twisted but they are there and with stuff he we never do in sin city. Its the silver age twisted, homaged and parodied all at the same time through miller mind. I love it, seems that only people i know outside of the internet like it and i also i'm one of the few who like dark knight strikes again. I also love the art as Jim lee has been a favorite of mine since the first comic i ever read (which happened to be x-men (vol. 2) Issue 1. But then again i like allot of stuff people don't like christ claremont's modern stuff.

I think Frank Miller's All-Star book was so bad he later made it a parody. By issue #8 it was soo bad I basically dropped it . On so many levels it failed. Least of all the excuse he painted to fans that it became a parody on "grim and gritty".

Regardless of what Miller is aiming for (or rather, what his fans and critics claim he is aiming for), the book itself is pretty poor quality, with a few "what the hell did he just say?" lines tossed into each issue.

I read the first few issues, and I think I'll get the trade. It's entertaining as hell and it's interesting to see Batman coming from a different set of roots, in a way.

I read the first issue and thought "WTF?! This is bad." But the stuff I have seen online is hilarious, so I am thinking of getting the trade.

That's too bad, because... seriously... the midpoint of issue 9 is where it turns around and you realize maybe he had a plan all along with the Goddamn Batman and trying to make Dick eat rats.
If I were to hazard a guess, it seems to get into the question, "why does Batman even need a Robin in the first place, anyway?"

Issue 9 was the last issue in the trade. I wanted to see how far along the next trade was and was shocked that issue 9 was the last issue to come out back in Feburary.
