View Full Version : What Are Your LIKES And DISLIKES About CBR?
Gail Simone

Let me qualify this one thing first, please.
If you have a problem with another forum or poster or mod, I am asking you to be cool about it, here. I do not want people to be unfairly called out, PERIOD.
If you have another forum, call it FORUM ZED. If you had a problem with a mod, please use MODERATOR ZED.
Seriously. I'm asking this for a couple reasons;
1) To be happy about the good stuff at CBR, and
2) To mention things that might be improved.
Everyone knows Jonah is my friend and I love CBR and if you have complaints, please make sure that they're constructive, if at all possible.
If this turns into "Oh, this moderator told me to be quiet because this poster said batman was awesome and I told him to fuck off," then I will shut it down, okay?

I love the amount of freedom we have to express ourselves without it getting TOO out of control.
I love the level of intelligence present here. Posters like yourself, Red Jack, ShauN and Sabrinaset are CONSTANTLY blowing my mind with the depths of their relentless intellect.
And I like that we can use profanity.

-I really like the community at YABS with a couple of exceptions I have on ignore.
-I really like most of the mods, and the mods I don't like are bad enough to really complain about.
Dislikes
-How many times the boards crash on me just as I am posting something or causes me to have double or tripple posts.
-How Gail Simone asks questions but never answers her own questions. ;) :D But I like her anyway.

Like : How theres really no huge fights anymore. I think by this point a lot of posters know each other well enough to get along on each board.
DISLIKE : I can't do RAW/TNA Reviews on the TV/Film Board. I feel so sad....but I follow the rules. Even if I wish I could bust one loose now.

Likes: All of the great people here. I've found a home online. And I like the fact that in one thread, I can talk about theology, while in another, I can go on about how much I love Kristen Bell, and Italian music.
Dislikes: Personality conflicts. However; I realise that they are an inevitable part of posting on any message board.
And though I may have disagreements with other posters, I don't truly hate anything, or anyone at CBR.
Though the server errors do drive me round the bend.

Most annoying thing is the server problems, the board vanishing for minutes at a time (often in times with very little usage, such as late at night), "invisible posts", etc.
I like the chance to talk about a wide variety of topics, from disappointments of Final Crisis in one thread to "Is Obama the Anti-Christ?" in another. :)

No dislikes.
I like that, despite fairly serious political, religious and comics-realted differences, for the most part everyone manages to be civil and, on occasion, amusing.
There's a reason I don't spend even a second on the "Official" DC boards. God knows what Marvel must be like.
Maybe it's not CBR in general as I don't venture far outside of YABS very often, but, from what I've seen, this is the place.

I like the YABS community.
I hate the 'Dark Obsessions In Fanboyland', the 'with us or against us' arguments that manifest anywhere from a character's costume to a controversial creator to electoral politics. I hate the way, in those discussions, armchair commentators play 'hardball interview' tactics, as if the people in the thread were in any way policy makers. I hate the way some people aren't able to let a difference of opinion remain just that, and make a crusade over the smallest differences.
And I hate when I'm complicit in all the of above.
I like the people and the discussion, and the sense of humor. I like that people share their personal triumphs and tragedies.
I like it here.

How about your sigs? Can we talk about your sigs out loud, or do we haveta do those in PM's too? Maaan that would suck! Even MOD ZED lets us talk about them in public! And over at FORUM ZED, *everyone* gets to talk about that out loud!

So, we're not supposed to use proper names here, then?
Certain posters need to be made aware that just because they cultivate personas as self-involved nitwits does not excuse them for acting as such when the grown-ups are trying to have a serious conversation.
A certain mod of a certain major superhero character's forum is a shameless whore for one of the worst publishing decisions and directions in my entire time of reading comics, and has single-handedly gelded all discussion that contradicts his opinion.
A different superhero-related forum just needs to be scoured clean and started over with a Genesis Device. One programmed to introduce intelligent life.

I hate the 'Dark Obsessions In Fanboyland',
That'll be five dollars royalties for that copyrighted material, please.
Well, honestly, the only thing I don't like about CBR is that when it comes to comics in general and creators more specifically, is that it demystifies the whole thing a little bit too much for me to completely enjoy it objectively. It's sometimes hard to avoid topics when they just pop up in the weirdest places and then you're left with this information now staring you in the face or the reality of this creator's personality left a little too bare.
I think I may have finally gotten used to the Dark Obsessions thing...I just expect my opinion about things to run contrary to the general popular view and then I'm pleasantly surprised when (if) it doesn't. That said, it still irritates me on the more general boards when nothing is discussed, it's just poo-poohed or exalted by consensus rather than looking at its merits. Band-wagoning, I guess.

As some others have mentioned, and I'm to lazy to quote them all right now.

All the annoying things about this forum are ones you'll find at most large message boards, so I don't really feel there's a need to mention the obvious things. But the one thing that does tend to grate a bit is the mostly unconscious sexist insults when posters (mostly guys, but ladies too from time to time) get into disagreements with each other. Is there really a need to malign women as a whole just so you can insult a poster by saying, in effect, that they are acting like a woman? I know this site is 90% males, but there's no reason show women less respect just because we don't have the equality of numbers here (and by here I mean CBR in general because YABS is a different story  ).

I second this. It's really annoying when some male online at YABS or elsewhere on CBR considers it an insult by referring to the other male poster he's mad at with a feminine name, pronoun, or sobriquet. Gotta love the implied sexism that being called a woman is an insult to these males.
And heyas Merey! Where've you been?
Likes:
The wide variety of posters and subjects to talk about, comic book and otherwise. Also the allowance to express most varying opinions on those subjects.
Lookwise, the fact that CBR is not one mess of a board with words being the prime purpose of a post, not having everyone have their own dizzying array of pictures for each of their posts and such like so many cluttered boards out there. CBR basically has the best layout & use of Jelsoft's vBulletin that I've seen on the net. Also the new choice to have the color of your CBR be your choice. That joining CBR is free.
Dislikes:
Don't really agree on some of the choices for individual forums. Don't like that lots of CBR history has been eradicated over the years due to every few years the whole system gets a reboot, which, in turn seems to cause some posters to leave and not come back, and not giving CBR a real sense of history.
Don't like when some posters leave for good, sometimes kinda sad to see 'em go.

The server issues.
I find a certain amount of members to be compulsive whiners, and post on these forums just to bitch and complain about the books, pointless if you ask me, dont they have anything better to do? I also find some of the longer running members to be elitist snobs, which is sad when you think about the fact its a fucking comic book forum. I also cant stand certain hypocritical posters who treat and talk to people like shit but when on the other end act like pussies and run of to report you like a fucking child.
I also wish that some of the more disliked members over at the X-Forum would take a hint and just fuck off.

Hello, everyone.
There is so much I like about CBR, it would be quite a long list. But, on the practical side, I'd like to have a couple of changes in particular:
A REALLY EASY (and I mean, click this button one-step-easy) way to upload and embed pictures into messages, of up to 150k size. There have been several times I have wanted to share new sketches or cover art but my non-coder brain couldn't fathom the process of posting them, and I really dislike putting up URL links.
And, I'd love some more size in the old PM box. I fret over missing messages from people because I may travel & the box gets all filled up.

Like: The people. The community is the best one in comics.
Dislike: It's slow. I suspect the message board software that is used for this isn't very efficient.
Also, I hate moderation sometimes. Sometimes, I just want to ruthlessly flame people like we can on unmoderated boards. And I want to use bad words from time to time. And sometimes I miss the anarchy of the DC boards. (Which I still visit to get out of my system from time to time)

I like the community.
I somewhat less than like that an obvious joke about flying ten thousand miles to knock food out of someone's hand/letting them starve is treated 100% literally as a threat of physical violence.
Or that people can be permabanned based on hearsay and conjecture vis a vis conduct on other forums.
But I still like the community.

Also, FORUM ZED was once a vibrant, alive community since reduced to godless hordes of illiterate fanboys via the permabanning of everyone even remotely interesting, thanks to a SUPERMOD ZED and MODERATOR ZED who decided that the best way to integrate FORUM ZED with the rest of CBR was by making it boring.

That's why they dim the lights.
I like everything. I kind of liked the smilies that got over ruled too.
About the only real thing that I dislike about CBR are some of the self-important and overly pretentious posters who run about telling others how to post. And I'm not talking about dressing down a couple of trolls here and there, but whoever they disagree with, or usually, whoever isn't in their clique. I dunno why these self-appointed mods think anyone should listen to them. They make me smile though.
Excuse me, self appointed mod? Thats Secret Police to you Bree, and you will respect my authority!

I also have to say that I like the previews and advanced solicitations. if it weren't for them, I would probably avoid the general boards completely.
I like getting to see people's art that aren't "professional big names". People like escapegoat and spaghettikiss (who actually IS professional) who I would never have been exposed to otherwise and who serve as personal influences.
I really dig getting recommendations for new and indie works from people.

In that case, Law Giver, consider this an official YABS moderator warning, especially given that Gail started the thread by asking not to blast specific posters.

Probably not worth pointing out for the umpteenth, but one complaint I have for CBR as a whole is how the site slows to a crawl sometimes. One moment you're trying to get a forum to load or make a post, then- BAM- you suddenly just posted the same thing half a dozen times.

Hell, I'd venture to say that most of the posts on this thread from people usually found on the X-Boards is about me in some way. I'd report them, but nothing would be done.
That sort of stuff bugs me about most messageboards. They all have their groups like that. Which is sort of a problem on places like CBR with their temporary bans; I never saw the point. Either someone is banned or they aren't - if a warning is needed then warn them. You see folks joking about it regularly (or I did when I read the other forums): "Oh, what did he do this time? He's so crazy!". Fuck 'em. We banned them at Comix-Fan and they just piss off elsewhere.
So some of the guys you're talking about might technically be our fault EZ. Sorry about that.
I do like the people in YABS. For the most part everyone can hold a conversation better than most people I've seen online. It makes this place a genuinely interesting place to look around, even if you're not posting regularly.

I don't even know who you are? La Fea and I only mentioned avatars and the like ... well that's not true, I asked for sex from Cronin as well, and I don't remember darkness making the slightest reference to you. So it seems a bit unfair to single us out in that way, just because we post in the X-boards.
Regardless, I apologise if I've done something to offend you. Even if I'm not sure what that is.
EDIT: I'd also like to say that something I really like is how diverse it is here ... I've never been in such a 'gay space' before without it being a gay site, where I normally get lewd messages from naked 50 year old men, so that's something I really like here. I also like how it's multi-national - I'm exposed to so many more different types of people.

Oh no, I've been an ass at times, I'll admit, so their admonishments have validity to a degree. I just hate to see cliques wreck the posting abilities of people not part of their group. I'd like to be able to post politely on forums that deal with the books I'm reading without being called a troll by 10 people that don't like me because I'm not of the hive. I'm not gay and obsessed with the culture, I don't have a favorite character of the moment that I make threads for, or refer to in every post, I don't like super-heroes killing and I look down on people that do. If that makes me wrong, I don't wanna be right.

While the X-forum is so rife with alternative sexuality that it may as well be a Jacqueline Carey novel, few of us are obsessed with the culture and it's often referenced in a way that makes light of it. No one, I'd hope, has been demanding you to glorify any single character either - I know I don't make threads about characters or mention them constantly and get along fine.
Regardless, if you have a problem, talk to Cronin when it arises rather than letting it stew.

We don't always get along or agree but we're almost always interesting.
As far as anything bad, this place is no worse and really a whole lot better than many other forums I visit. Most of the posters around here are willing to accept that we are all individuals with different tastes and beliefs (other than when we get in pissy moods, and that includes me.)
You ever have a problem with this forum, spend some time on the DCMB with its constant fights over GLs and Flashes, assorted trolls telling you you're an idiot cause you think character x is cool or plot-line y is fun.
of course the same thing is true of this forum as any other, if a particular poster, thread, or subject bothers you too much, you can just ignore it or them
cause there will be another one along any second now.

You don't have to be any of those things, but it doesn't give you a right to lift your nose at the people who do and I think that's the source of a lot of the friction than anything else.
I mean...what I like about CBR is that so many posters inject their lives and their real life tics to their posts. There's so much humanity than just LET'S TALK ABOUT COMIC BOOKS, KAY? I greatly appreciate that and that's what keeps me coming back instead of just dropping in after every Wednesday comic pick-up.

la fea is right. Stop trying to run the joint. A lot of people don't like superheroes killing, yet the hysterical moral judgments you lay down on people who enjoy a comic that you don't are rather out of control.
Me, personally, I do not favor any particular character, but I enjoy seeing people identify with their own personal hero.

Ok, I may get horribly burned for this, but remember, this is my OPINION... and it was asked for since I contribute on the board. I really dislike the posters here that feel the need to discuss EVERY ******* PROBLEM they have in their life. I mean, I'm all for good (and important) news sharing, I am. I know this accounts for only like 3-5 people on this board, but those same 3-5 drive me insane.
It's like this: I work with people who have mental retardation 40 plus hours a week. I run 13 homes for individuals who, for the most part due to the way their brains are working, decide to express themselves in certain ways that are very not standard of the 'typical' person. I then come to YABS and see posts that, honesty, feel like they were written by some of my clients. Not a slam to my clients, they cannot control how they think, just saying.
My thing is this: We've ALL got problems. Every single one of us. I'm not sure if it's due to not having friends outside cyberspace, their own emotional or mental issues, or just what I like to call 'social retardation'... but in my opinion a handful of posters have some issues they bring here that make coming to YABS at times annoying and difficult. I know I'm not the only one who feels that way about it, either.
I'm sorry for pointing people out, and I'm sorry if some people might instantly think 'Oh that's the people shrike is talking about'... but it honestly is the single most hated thing for me on YABS.
Oh, and political discussions. Two things you should never discuss amongst others is politics and religion, because most of us have out heads so far up our asses what we are always having is a arguement, not a discussion. I _rarely_ have seen in my lifetime people actually taking the mental energy to understand where others are coming from.
I think that covers it.
Wait, strike that. The plethora of 'parody threads'. It's not funny for the most part. It's like when you teach a four year old a joke and then he repeats it the next few hours. Not charming, and you'd think most of the posters on here who do it are internally witty enough to be more creative.

This is going to surprise you; but I agree with most of what you've said (with the exception of comparing posters to the mentally retarded, as I feel that was not necessary). But I do agree that it's best not to air your problems out on a message board, as an environment like this will not help you resolve the issues that you need to work on.
