I actually miss Rich Johnston now.....at least he admits to commenting on rumours and rumblings rather than trying to make them come off as truth

and an outdated and badly written one trying taking speculation as fact.

What scares me is this:

(How dopey of DiDio to come out with a new series Decisions this September where the superheroes take political stands timed to the election.)

I can see this one coming a mile away ... all the villains are conservatives, and the heroes are liberals. Hey, I'll bet it will be written by Steve Englehart and Joe Kelly, right? *laughs*

Actually, not really.

There are two writers writing this. Judd Winick who is extremely liberal and Bill Willingham who is on par with Chuck Dixon in being conservative. And each of them get heroes for their point of view to write.

What I am worried about is that people project their political beliefs on their favorite characters. What if we find out that Superman is anti-gay marriage or Wonder Woman is pro water-boarding. How will their fans react?

personally I think this is one of Didio's dumbest ideas.

I remember reading this same article last month, just after Final Crisis #1 came out.

Considering the amount of bondage that takes place on Thymescria, I would not be surprised that Wonder Woman is into waterboarding!

Winnick. Ha ha ha ...*snort* ... Oh, maaaan ... the jokes just write themselves here!

There, I fixed that for you.

On Themysceira, when they interrogate you, they threaten to withhold the torture.

"No, please, I'll tell you anything! Just don't make me go one more night without my spanking!"

I think the writers will not only do this, but this characterization will probably be ignored in future variations of the character. (With the exception of Green Arrow and Hawkman)

For example, Nightwing has gone from liberal-leaning (Wolfman), to Conservative-leaning (Dixon), to ultra-liberal (Grayson). Flash has been another character that has been all over the map politically. (Although with his lifes ups and downs, you could make the case for his politics always changing)

Then there's also the hypocrisy factor. For example, Superman could come out pro gun-control, but fans will remind him that when he lost his powers, he was off wielding an illegal machine gun during the last alien invasion.

It's a bad idea all around. Yet, it's one of the things everyone will probably buy just so they can trash the thing.

It IS a bad idea -- especially with several of the characters coming off as both liberal and conservative, depending on one's point of view.

Both Superman and Batman could have cases made for both. (In fact, I remember back on Denny O'Neil's original message board this subject came up in relation to Batman. This was maybe in 2001? IIRC, Denny pegged him as a conservative. The discussion as to why was interesting from a writing POV.)

Definately a bad idea to "brand" heroes with very specific political beliefs for this series.

Q: I know Flash (Wally) used be classed as a conservative with his criticism of Red Star (very heavy-handed, not Marv's greatest moment), but what were the examples of Nightwing being shown as you desribed by those writers?

I can't wait to see Judd Winick aka Green Arrow talk thru that character.

Ha. That article doesn't just seem to be outsider speculation, it's also quite dated already.

Though I never did get one of those Dan Didio must die T shirts.

Aside from writers, I think it's also context. In a world wide team setting, maybe Dick was more liberal. On his own cleaning up Bludhaven, he'd swing more 'conservative'. And clearly when he's on a Judd Winick reality show posing as a superhero team he becomes fabulously liberal and slutty like everyone else.

Then again, I refuse to believe politics is a simple matter of left and right. I like the left / right / authoritative / anarchistic map myself. Though I think maybe someday we'll move to a more accurate 4th dimensional hypercube.
