View Full Version : Which Marvel hero is due for a push in 2009?

Recently, several Marvel heroes that were flirting with the B or C-list have recieved big pushes that resulted in their own titles, membership on A-List teams and/or prominent roles in the Marvel U. Most notably have been Luke Cage, Iron-Fist, Nova, Herculese, Ares and Moon Knight. So who is due in 2009 for a big push and a renewed role in the MU? Vote in the poll or add another choice in the thread. Thanks!

My suspicion? None of them, unfortunately. The already-major characters will always get the focus -- Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man -- rather than lesser ones. Even if non-A-List characters get focus, such as the larger role Spider-Woman has been given and the Hawkeye/Mockingbird moment in Secret Invasion, they'll rarely get the monologues or drop the bombshells that will really change the course of the story.
I know this wasn't specifically about crossover events but . . . bleh . . .

It'd be nice to see Shang-Chi in something other than a cameo for once.

People might have said the same thing about Iron Fist not that long ago. Now the Immortal Iron-Fist has been a big hit and Danny has a place in the best-selling team book for Marvel...Ditto for Nova and his solo and involvement in the Annihilation events...Hercules basically disappeared for almost 10 years before a mini and some major play in CW and WWH. Now he's taken over "Incredible" in what has become a big seller. It does happen, just not all at once, that's why it takes a push from editorial or the love of some of the big writers (ie Spider-Woman/Luke Cage/etc. & Bendis)...Or sometimes it just takes the right angle to tap into a character's true potential ala Fraction's Iron-Fist.

I'd be happy w/ either of those two choices, but I voted for Cloak&Dagger b/c they haven't been featured as permanent cast in any book for a long time. At least Shang Chi had a run in H4H not too long ago, although I still think he needs his own breakout vehicle.

I'd be very happy with a Deathlok (Luther Manning) push.
edit: How could I forget the Falcon! He's being used well in Bru's Cap book. I'd love to see Bru write a Falcon mini.
I'd be interested to see him show up in either the Iron Man or Captain America books for a big story arc.
And not that I expect them to, but it would be cool to see Man-Wolf and the Shroud get a nice push.

Scorpion is a good one...I didn't think about her, although I did hear she might be turning up in Incredible Herc sometime in the near future.
Personally, besides Shang-Chi and Cloak & Dagger, I would like to see a team-up book: Black Cat/White Tiger...How perfect would that be? A sexy kick-@$$ thief and a sexy, kick-@$$ cop...It's a match made in heaven (or my perverted mind)...Come on Joe Q, I know you read the boards...

Eric O'Grady. i think he should commit treason during Secret Invasion and be hunted throughout the Marvel Universe. usually when heroes go fugitive, it's because they were framed or are undeservedly considered to be threats ex. the Hulk. him being an Initiative cadet is fun but he needs a niche to last.

I think he and Dagger are due, but it will take the right story to do it.Yeah, I feel that someone like BKV would be able to do good things with them. Speaking of Cloak 'n Dagger, it's been ages since I read their appearance in Runaways (and they haven't had much meaningful appearances since), but how old are they supposed to be now? I know they debuted as teenagers, but w/ the sliding timeline and all, are they still teens? or are the just young twenty-somethings now? did they ever go to HS/college after their powers kicked in? and last question, how does Cloak's cloak tie in w/ his powers? like it appears that he needs his cloak for his powers to work (like when Molly ripped it off and he became Ty again) but is that a psychological thing or does the cloak itself have any special powers/properties?

I think they are early twenties now...Not sure about Cloak's cloak except that it taps into his natural abilities. But since he is listed as a mutant, it could just be psychological. Oh, and Cloak did make some appearances in CW and a recent cameo in SI #1.

Shang Chi. C'mon Marvel is lagging behind DC Comics in promoting Asian character. What's the largest untapped market? Asia.
I also believe 2009 will be the year of Wolverine, Namor, Dr. Doom and Deadpool.

I check "other" I feed that 2009 will be Rogue's year to shine! After being in limbo for almost a year, I theorize after her "Big Story" return in Legacy, Rogue at the end with end up much more emotionally and psychologically stronger and end up with a very powerful power inhancement due to the various things that happened to her last year up to the end of the Messiah Complex. Then she will stay at the forfront...

Machine Man, of course. With appearances in Marvel Comics Presents, Ms. Marvel, Nextwave, and X-Men: First Class, plus what I am assuming is a starring role in the next Marvel Zombies book, 2009 is shaping up to be the Year of the Robot!

Eh, it's not much of a push. Yes, he's making a lot more appearances these days. But it's in a supporting role, and Aaron deserves better than the fringes of Marvel.
Plus, this could lead the way toward Aaron and M-11 doing a buddy comic!

Yeah. I just don't want it to be the sociopath Aaron from Nextwave. A little bit of that is fine, but he needs to get back to his introspective and heroic roots. With a bit of crazy mixed in since he doesn't quite 'get' the human experience.

That does make it tough...but why not re-invent/re-interperet the character ala Iron-Fist...Technically the history Fraction developed doesn't jive perfectly with the character's origins, but I don't hear anyone complaining 'cause it rocks the hardness...make it good and readers will embrace it.
Personally, I would like to see him as a kick-@$$ agent of SHIELD. Going on undercover missions in Asia...infiltrating the Hand..."Enter the Dragon" type stuff.

Out of that list i'd hope for a Morbius push, followed by a return for M.A.C.H. IV (or V at this point which would make a unique tie in to the Speedracer movie). Morbius is just the type of character who could probably even carry a movie on his own

I want an Asian character that has his name in front of the comic book, not as a supporting cast.
If "Shang Chi" name isn't sellable, give him a new appellation. Danny Rand goes by the name of Iron Fist, Shang Chi can get a new name to make him more marketable.

I agree about Cloak and Dagger, ever since i saw them in Runaways i thought they were a cool duo. Hope to see a mini or their own series.
Otherwise i wish for a Cosmic character to get a push like his own mini and play a bigger role.

A lot of the heroes above could use a push but I believe this character could use a definite push. He is just so difficult to write well, but has great potential. My pick is:
wait for it . . .
. . . wait for it . . .
Dr. Strange
A creative good writer could do wonders with him. He may be one of those characters that is best utilized in only mini series and guest appearances. Also Dr Strange (Master of the Mystic Arts) is a legacy character. I believe Marvel should get a really creative writer and an interesting visual artist really promote. Marvel does not do much with their magical/mystical characters. Marvel could even kill or banish strange and start anew with the next generation's Master of the Mystic Arts. But it does not have get rid of Strange, just do something interesting with him.

MightyGodking says this (http://mightygodking.com/index.php/2008/03/24/insert-pun-or-riff-using-word-strange-here/) about Dr. Strange.
I'm a fan of Strange too, but cast my vote for MACH-IV because I loved what Busiek did with him in the first 25+ issues of Thunderbolts v.1. Characters that good should never fade away if there's somebody around who can write them well.

Dr. Strange is too big of a plot device. His powerful is too immense to make a continual and quick (cough, JMS Thor, cough) ongoing story. Expect a mini, nothing more.
I'm going to have to go with Wolverine. I think he's finally ready for some serious face time in the MU.
Phantom Druid

Doctor Druid's son, currently from Nick Fury's new Howling Commandos.
I voted for other because I would like to see a push for Gladitator of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard. They really could do a lot with him, especially since they have been pushing their space characters since Annihilation.
Also, other characters like Silverclaw need a push. I always liked her and felt that she should be used more often.

Namor has a new mini coming out soon and will be playing a role in SI come issue #6 with the "Illumi-naughty".
Surfer currently has an appearence in Nova, but you are right he should get some more love, especially with all the cosmic characters out there right now.

Well, call it selfish...I chose a bunch of characters I thought should get some more play. But I left it open for discussion because I knew there would be other suggestions.
I also kept some people off (like Machine Man and Darkhawk) due to recent or upcoming appearances. Aaron Stack, for example, has been in Ms. Marvel, MCP and Nextwave recently, and will be appearing in Marvel Zombies 3. Darkhawk has been in the Loners series, which probably makes him off limits for a while as there has been talk of follow-up stories involving that group. I also tried to stay away from long-standing characters that have recieved multiple pushes in the past that may or may not have worked out (ie, Dr. Strange, Silver Surfer and Namor).

I voted for Deathlok. I think that many modern fans would like the Luther Manning version of Deathlok, because he was so far ahead of his time when introduced. Deathlok was ruthless, ultraviolent, alienated and yet outraged at the world he lived in. If you call that living. A serious writer could deliver the violence, but also explore interesting ideas involving technology, violence, freedom, the relationship between defense contractors and the government, and more.
However, if the Sax Rohmer estate finally loses that deathgrip on Fu Manchu, I would love to see Shang-Chi get a big push. Or at the very least, some nice quality trade collections of his classic series.

cloak & dagger should be brought back..
cloak in particular needs to be re-defined... for so long now he's had the tragic quasi-vampire existence, along with the unrequited pining for Tandy... somehow, the next story arc should present him with the ability to suppress his power/hunger and he should finally be allowed to have a girlfriend... (not Tandy).. Cloak should also be attending college..

Agreed...And Tandi is smokin hot, which is key to being a great spy...Heck, why not team them up with Shang-Chi? He's been an MI:6 agent in the past.
