Now that it been a couple of week sense the last issues, I wonder how some of you guys feel about the possibility of Balder being Thor's brother?
The "real world" myth states that he is Thor's brother but in the Marvel universe it was never stated who Balder's father was.
Personally I like that he may be Thor's brother and hopes it's not a lie from Loki.

If Loki isn't lying wouldn't Balder technically be Thor's half brother?
I'd be for the familial ties myself.

That would be mythologically accurate. Thor is Odin's son by Jord, the earth goddess (Gaia in Marvel). Balder is Odin's son by Frigg. So they're half-brothers.

Hell, I'm pretty sure a couple of writers treated him that way, anyway. Or at least, I always figured Balder was Odin's son in Simonson's run, given that he took over for him.

I think that it's a slippery slope to incorporate too much of the traditional myth into the comics. With this and Fractions pretty much word for word retellings including the Enchantress becoming Freyja the writers are backing themselves into a corner creatively.
There was obviously a reason why he was never Thors brother in the comics, I think it heightens the rivalry between Thor and Loki. Balder has already ruled Asgard in Thors abscence once. You also run the risk of unecessary and confusing retconning.
I would argue that the most interesting parts of "comic" Thor never appear in the myths
- Donald Blake/Jake Olson
- The Reigning
- Beta Ray Bill
- The Warriors three
- Wrecking Crew
- Enchantress
- Destroyer
- Absorbing Man
etc.
I think JMS is trying to set up Balder trying to rule Agsard. Balder has already ruled Asgard in Thors abscence once. I will wait and see how JMS deals with it all

I'm ok with it, but partly because I always dig heroes who also have siblings in the hero-biz. I think it adds a fun dynamic to a superhero story.
