View Full Version : Did you like Madelyne Pryor as Scott's wife? Or the Goblin Queen?

Did you like Madelyne Pryor as Scott Summers' wife, as Chris Claremont had originally intended. They were to get married and retire to Alaska and live happily ever after.
Or did you prefer when Madelyne was given more to do by eventually becoming the Goblin Queen. This was NOT what Madelyne's creators had wanted, but happened nonetheless. It definitely gave Maddie more to do.
So which do you prefer? Pryor's original reason for existing? Or what was done to her in Inferno?

As a fierce betch who wasn't with Scott but wasn't the GobQ
Madelyne Pryor as not-Jean never made sense to me. The clues were so clear that she was intended as Jean reincarnated and the team's reaction to her was weird with none of them raising the question whether it was smart marrying the spitting image of Scott's dead girlfriend.
What would have been interesting though was if somehow they could have made Maddy Jean's incarnation after all, with the Phoenix giving her a new life after severing the ties.
I liked Inferno though, it was a great read in my opinion. So i was fine with Maddy being turned into the Goblin Queen even if the backstory was kinda convoluted.

I agree with you there. The clues were so blatant, and then we're told Madelyne is NOT Phoenix. It just sounded false.
And why weren't the X-Men and Professor Xavier more distrusting of Maddie? This could have been explored more.

i'm not gonna say the entire arc sucked but i thought some interesting stories could have come out of madelyne with scott...i always thought her as the goblin queen was a cop out by marvel, when they decided to bring jean back...
*shrugs*
but then marvel has been known to do that on more than one occassion...

Agreed.
Though I have to admit I do like Maddie as a character. They shouldn't have killed her off. Her and Jean could have made up and become like sisters (twin sisters  )

Never really read about her so I don't really care about her. I'd be happy if they just wiped her out of continuity, if only to streamline stuff.

I agree! That inbetween period before Inferno, where it was leading UP to Inferno, was good for her.

I love Madelyne Pryor's story and how it ended. Just your usual tragedy. So yeah, I liked when she went insane.

I always thought she deserved better than what she got. It was a tragedy, yes, and I usually feel sorry for the characters in tragedies. I feel particularly bad when I've grown to like a character as I did Madelyne.
She never seemed like a "Jean clone" to me; other than her appearance that is. Her personality was significantly different, although not in a bad way, for most of her existence.

Sadly, Madelyne never had a chance. As soon as Jean came back, it was obvious it was only a matter of time for Maddy to be written out.

That's some nice art. Is it yours, psycwave?
If Maddie as the Goblyn Queen had eventually come to her senses I would've liked that version of her just fine. As it turned out, though, her assuming that persona was the start of a series of events that would ultimately lead to her death, which I believe is the main reason I don't care for it and prefer the unpowered, sweet Madelyne.
I recently quoted part of an interview Claremont did in 1993 or so in the Spidey BND thread after Scott & Emma came up in the conversation. Since it's more relevant to this thread, here it is again. For some context, Claremont is explaining why he wouldn't have had Scott and Jean get married if he had still been writing the book.
CC: So he still carries a torch for Jean. OK, that's fine. Jean is marrying Scott, so what's Scott's track record to date? (laughter) Well, he had a wife, he got married in the mansion, everybody was there, he said till death do you part, they had a kid, and he walked out on them, without a second thought and went to X-factor. And then for various stupid, and I confess, I had my part in this as well as anyone else, plot reasons didn't deal with it for a long time. The reason he didn't deal with it was because he didn't have a clue what to do with it. I mean the guy was a cad and a bounder, no ifs, no ands, no buts.
In one fell swoop, he was destroyed as a character, as a heroic, he made a commitment to people and then walked out on them. And for various reasons, not Weezie (Simonson), not me, we never dealt with that. We seem to take, what seemed at the time to be the only sensible way out, which was, we made Madelyne into the bad, you know, we set up a situation where rather than have Scott face the consequences of his actions, we'd just sort of like, kill them all. And everyone forgave Scott, because Madelyne was a b**** anyway.
Btw, here's some more, with Claremont describing how he thought a marriage proposal would probably be received by Jean back then:
"Jean, marry me."
"Why?"
"I love you."
"You loved Madelyne."
"(pause)"
"Yeah well, you walked out on her, Scott. You going to walk out on me? Suppose we discover in a year that Madelyne isn't dead? Suppose I'm Madelyne? Suppose I'm Phoenix? How are you going to deal with that? How am I to trust you? You made a commitment, you did not fulfill it. You abandoned a child."

That claim is against continuity. We got a nipple shot at least once with Silvestri's Goblin Queen.

i would've liked her to stay just Madelyne Pryor, having a somewhat inappropriate relationship with her brother-in-law, with the X-Men in the Outback.

NO WAY.
I was just reading my tbp of "Inferno" this weekend. I personally, absolutely LOVE what they did with Madelyne. Up until halfway through Inferno, I think Maddie was pretty justified in her actions. Of course, when she went completely psycho, there was no going back for her, but right before she enacted her plan to sacrifice her own son, she really was an intriguing character. I totally agree with most of you who are saying she was the most interesting when she was in the Outback, before Inferno. That was when we knew something was up with her that wasn't quite right, but we were still in the dark. I love a good mystery.
Oh, and the Madelyne and Havok hook up was HAWT. That was so naughty of them considering she was Alex's brother's wife, but I think they made a good couple. (Don't tell Lorna!)

That was one of the big mistakes they made with that plot. They didn't seem to have the skill to describe Maddie's and Scott's failing marriage in a way that would have made sense. So, instead they did things like had Scott think for a ridiculously long time that a disconnected phone must mean that his wife has left him without suspecting that something else might be wrong. The story about Maddie and Scott trying to cope with Jean's return and eventually ending up divorced could have been an interesting story but apparently neither Claremont or any any of the others were willing to go there.

Chris Claremont wanted Scott and Madelyne Pryor to live happily ever after. Retired in Alaska. The whole "abandon his family" part was done by Marvel to bring about X-Factor. I agree, I think Scott leaving his family DID hurt him as a heroic character. It was years before Maddie became evil and before that it made Scott look like a dead-beat dad.

As Goblyn Queen, Madelyne Pryor was w'ked...(in both connotations)...and while I truly understood why she couldn't exist/live along side her template Jean Grey, (I thouroughly enjoyed the Inferno X-over...it was some HELLA Hawtness...btw) I truly wished she had become a separate character (even as an X-villain), rise above her own identity crisis and be an individual...(yes...I am completely disregarding that whole "psychic entity" wots-it utter foolishness of recent times.)

For what was done to the character since her first appearance I like, for the most part, how things transpired. As others mentioned, I would have preferred her to stay the independent woman than go GQ. For how things played out, I enjoyed the ride.

The Goblin Queen was all sorts of awesome. The costume was nonpareil, and that kind of blatent sexery is sorely lacking from the staid, matronly X-world as of late.

I loved two things about Madelyne Pryor
1. Scott left Madelyne, his legitimate wife, for Jean and gave her motiviation to be what she was.
2. By creating Madelyne Pryor, basically Sinister has seen Jean naked. So either way..Scott loses.
