Man, what extremely sad news.
While I admit that I was never a huge fan of his work, I always greatly admired him and the way he fought this dreadful disease. In every interview that I came across, Mr. Turner was always full of a magnificently positive attitude regarding his plight. I've had several members of my family lose their battles with cancer, unfortunately never having the let's go get this thing beat attitude that Michael exuded during their struggles. I remember thinking after each said interview, Man I wish Dad had had this fight in him...
I got to meet Mr. Turner in Chicago about six years ago. I was outside the convention center and saw him making his way towards the door, on crutches. The person entering before him neglected to hold the door open for him (who the heck doesn't hold the door for someone on crutches?!) Just as the door was about to catch his side, I grabbed it and held it wide.
"I believe I just saved your life, Mike", I quipped.
We both had laugh and he thanked me, which he did two more times later on in the convention, calling me over to his signing booth. A little brush with comic book fame that me made like the heck out of the guy.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, and those he called friends, and to his fans whose days were brightened by drawings...

I was not a fan of his work but he sounds like a good guy who fought to the bitter end.

That's really sad news. I liked his style and thought his designs were great. 37 is way too young to pass away. Very sad. Condolences and prayers go out to his family. We lost another great person with way too much talent and personality.

I knew he had been battling long term illness...but he seemed to be making a come-back...I enjoyed some of his creations, but regardless...it's sad to see a young man pass in such a fashion...deepest condolences to his family, friends and fans...

While I wasn't a huge fan of his, he was talented and very nice the few times I saw him at cons. Rest in peace, Mike.

So very, very sad.
He was responsible for the image below, which is one of my favorite Flash pieces ever.

I agree with you, Rick. He fought so hard for so long and it's truly a tragedy that he's no longer with us.

Mike had been fighting (and with great success up to this point) some form of virilant cancer for years. In fact, as far back as I can remember, when I became aware of Mike's work, he'd had it. Sometimes it would be in remission and he'd be very prolific and other times he'd be layed up for quite some time recuperating from treatment.
I always admired how, even in ill health, he had this smile which radiated not only confidence but a pure joy of his chosen career. Again, as Rick had mentioned, I was never a huge fan of his work, but I did admire his ability to bring joy to others.
