I started what turned out to be the worst reton thread. How about lets talk about the best Retcons!!! To me these are needed changes that either fixed a fualty character, fixed an old bad retcon, made a character more interesting, or moved a stalled or sterile character forward.

Have fun!

I tend to like the grander conspiracies and networked histories. So stuff like what Carey's doing with Xaiver/Sinister, what BWS did with Weapon X, what Claremont did with Farouk/everybody, lots of Nicezia's Gambit/Cable stuff, etc. At least as long as it's done well (ie: not by Loeb/Way).

A retcon i would love to see is somehow making Jean the Phoenix...not some avatar of a cosmic entity that impersonated her.

Claremont already attempted to do that with an add-on story to one of the Classic X-Men (#43), or at least he tried to reconcile the two versions.

Magneto not being Xorn was a good necessary retcon, if a little clumsily executed. Planet X should have never been published in the first place, but barring that bad decision, retconning it out ASAP was the right way to go.

Agreed. I know I'm now pissing a lot of you off right now, but I really liked Deadly Genesis.

Magneto being a Holocaust survivor, and having been friends with Professor Xavier back in the day, is probably the best one I can think of.

Oh, and Wolverine being a grizzled old soldier with adamantium bonded to his skeleton, rather than a snotty teenager with a pair of gloves that have claws in them. That's a pretty good one.

I agree. I loved that story plus it brought Darwin. I know people are pissed about Vulcan being the 3rd summers brother, but Sinister only said "brothers" there could still be more out there. So don't hold out on hope for Gambit and Adam X. O yeah and Sage as original 06

Those were awesome character developments, but they really weren't actually retcons. There were hints that Xavier and Magneto went back further than Cape Citadel since almost day one, and putting the Holocaust in Magneto's background was filling in a backstory that simply hadn't existed yet (though one could say that there were hints of Magneto having gone through some form of predjudice before Uncanny #150). As it didn't replace anything, it was just revealed backstory, not a retcon.

Petra & Sway carried that storyline! Don't lie!

And there can't be that many more, since both of his parents were murdered, at different times though.

That could be done by simply declaring that "Phoenix" is Jean's code-name--and the "Phoenix Force" is the name some people use for the cosmic energy resource upon which all acts of creation or destruction draw. Others call it "Falkon" or "Shiva."

The retcon/revelation I want that hasn't happened yet: The X-Men learn that Madelyne Pryor sincerely meant it when she cried "Save the baby" in X-Factor #37. She managed to regain control just long enough to toss her son into the air--away from the Goblin Queen. It was an act of love and desperation, like Kate Summers shoving her boys out of a burning plane.

Wow, I never thought about that. An amazing idea. U should kill Questada and take his place in Marvel. I really mean it.

Sage reveals that Xavier recruited her around the same time he formed the original X-Men, but he purposely kept her apart & did not let the other X-Men know about her; Xavier kept her separated on purpose to be his spy. Sage has resented Xavier since. Technically, she was never part of the original X-Men. Read about it in X-Treme X-Men #19-22 & #40-45.
