Will Mignola be offering a sketch book at SDCC this? Anyone know
what DarkHorse as planned thats Hellboy related?

Figure I'd plan
ahead for those things I'll be bidding on from the Ebay.:D

MM had a sketch book for the 10 Years of Hellboy, and it was one of the coolest things I have ever got at a con. Isn't he doing the cover for the 20th of Dark Horse? That would be sweet to pick up!

Mike has done a new sketchbook that he will have at San Diego that is called Some Drawings. This is non Hellboy. He has also done a 5 1/2 X 8 1/2 San Diego only Hellboy print.
The sketchbook is $20.
The print is $5.

Thanks.
Have I ever mentioned how much I love Tad?
Obviously I would paypal the funds

I thought it was a lobster as well but on closer inspection it seems that it is a scorpion.

Thanks for the response, Christine. The sketchbooks are always fun, even
for us non-artists types. Sort of a backstage peek at the things that pass
thru Mignola's mind before we see a finished comic page, book cover or
poster. The Hellboy print has the same "Untold-Story" aspect as last years
print.

Ahem... and I as well beg for the kindness of a Hellboarder to "hook-me-up"
as skinnymikec so aptly put it.:D

I read about MM's registration under Hot Chocolate/Jim Silke,
is that where these will be available?

I hate to sound like an old grump Bandit, but why would you want to anyway? :o Aren't these sketchbooks for readin' and not necessarily for sealing away in a plastic coffin for time and all eternity? Sorry for that. We now take you back to your regularly scheduled good (and more valid) advice... :D

Thank you immensely for this information, Christine! With Mike's prices on the rise (granted, only in an effort to keep up with ever escalating market demand for his work- and sky high prices on eBay) I'm a little skittish, but I have no doubts that something special will catch my eye this year! :D

Thats ok, but you do sound like an "old grump". What I do with comics, and sketchbooks after I'm done "readin" them is up to me. And what you see as a "plastic coffin" I see as a way to ensure my collection doesn't end like a bent pile of crap every 3 years when the Air Force moves me to another base. Does any one have an answer to my original question? And I hate to sound like an young grump Stygian, but how do you read a SKETCHbook? Also I know I'm new to the forum, and your just busting my b@lls!:D

Im going to SD and will definitely be looking for Mike's stuff. Hopefully I'll be able to get some ORIGINAL ART! Let's hope I win the lottery between now and then!

If I can swing it I will pick up some extra copies of the sketchbook - seems to be a hot commodity!

EVERY SINGLE TIME Mike has a sketchbook...I miss the Con. Weird coincidence or the dark fates of the netherworld conspiring against me?

I will add, with a happy note, that also EVERY SINGLE TIME some Hellboy fan has gotten me the goods. So while the demons plot their eventual ruin of my will to live, the fantasticaly wonderful fans of the Big Red Guy spit in their collective eye.

Now, before someone points a finger my way and screams, "Kiss ass!" let me point out that my brother-in-law is going to the Con and has my shopping list in hand (along with a fist full of my sweaty cash). So, don't cry for me, Archie and Tina, I will be fine. Spread that Hellboy love to those other unfortunates amongst us.

I will be going next year for sure so plan on squat next SDCC!

Timaximus
06-18-2006, 11:06 PM
I'll try to pick up an extra one of each. Having been helped out here with the Mexico print and the Silver Snail poster (which should get here any day now...), I feel I should do someone else the favor.

He might bring non-Hellboy sketches? I considered myself out of the running for MM art this year, as I have about the best HB page I could wish for, but if there's nice non-HB stuff, I might have to step in.

DannyBoy7783
06-19-2006, 05:06 AM
I'm jumping on the bandwagon too. If anyone can get these for me please let me know. I'd like both items if possible (yes, I'm a greedy sob :))

While I love a lot of the stuff that shows up at conventions such as this kind of stuff or other collectibles like action figures I wish they were more accessible to everyone. I know part of the appeal is that it is only available at the Cons but some of us will never get a chance to go. It's frustrating at times.

I know Bandit and I apologize for sounding like such a downer. I'm just not onboard with CGC. I have nothing against the organization itself, other than the fact that it promotes somewhat overstated values, seals the comic/sketchbook/etc. in a plastic coffin for time and all eternity, and in general the idea just irks me. I wish you luck in your search though. I'm pretty sure the organization has a toll free number and or a URL. Most reputable companies do these days.

I'm going to go off and dog ear a few comics now. :)

Dog ear some COMICS; you Sir are INSANE! Yeah I'm kind of a freak when it comes to the condition of comics. But I wouldn't buy them if I didn't read them, and dig the sweet art. I also agree with your view of CGC, but don't think its a "coffin". Although I would never do it, and any kid of mine that dare go against my teachings would never do it, you can take them out. No apology needed for your opinion. I called the number last week and the people they have at customer support know nothing about their product/service?! Have I said Happy Birthday Stygian lately!

Oh my goodness...
Um, I'd love to be on a list if there's going to be one.
I, like many of you beautiful people, am an East coaster and can never get out there. Sometimes, I wish there was a way that items such as these maybe some original artwork coming up, could be offered to the loyal and true here through this site and not be bludgeoned with the inflated prices that will be seen in places like ebay. I know this would be an awful lot of work and am certainly not trying to be a whiney-baby. I've certainly appreciated and am ever grateful to the awesome folks here that have grabbed me the first 2 sketchbooks (grails I tell ya!) and the 'Snail' print , their kindness keeping a poor boy like from having to pay insane prices afterwards
Just throwing out an opinion...or :D hope
But I'll hunt down those SD items one way or another.
Thanks for the heads up-they look fantastic!

Think this stuff will still be there on Friday? I won't be there 'til then! :)

Mike still had SDCC 05' sketchbooks at WonderCon in March Rick, so I'd say you're fine in waiting until Friday. :) Also, it seems that Mike prints quite a few of whatever it is that he's selling, so most likely anyone showing up a few days after the show opens should be good. Of course, that's just an assumption on my part.

Tad
06-19-2006, 05:39 PM
The sketchbooks are always bought by comic stores who sell them at cost as a service to customers (House of Secrets, Burbank, Ca) or at a mark up (Golden Apple Comics, Hollywood, Ca) and I'm sure Bud Plant will have some. So check their websites and inquire now.

Otto66
06-19-2006, 09:27 PM
I don't mind pay'n a bit extra for these items to any Hellboarder who PMs
me or even to the stores you mentioned, Tad. Would much rather do that
then go thru the Ebay, again. Do the stores you've mentioned have obvious
website addresses? Huh, never figured Bud Plant.

(Otto makes a resolve that, by hook or by crook, he'll be at SDCC next year.
Maybe then, he can finally fullfil his fanboy dreams and purchase some original Mignola art from Mignola himself.)

Could someone please add me to the sketchbook list/ pick up a copy for me? I just hate e-bay- that is how i both bought the 10 year book for more than double what mike was selling it for and missed out on the first HB sketchbook. I am not interested in the poster- it looks cool though.

I'm just throwing this out there as an idea and I'm not volunteering anyone or anything but could the Mignola booth perhaps set aside a certain number of sketchbookst for a hellboarder to pick up and distribute to those of us who can't go? People keep mentioning a list but so far I don't think there is an official list. Perhaps we could have one? Do this all official like? Just an idea for discussion...so discuss :)

Now all we need is a kind and generous soul who would collect the money, pick up the books and prints (at least 50 of each), buy packaging material, pack them, fill out the forms, take them to the P.O. and ship them out.

Any volunteers?:p

eBay here I come!!!

Tad

But it always takes at least one saint-like volunteer who will collect the money and handle the packaging and postage. It's no small job.

DannyBoy7783

As I said, I was just putting the idea out there so I didn't mean to pressure anyone but I personally would be so grateful to secure these 2 items. I'd be happy to pay a few bucks extra to the volunteer for their trouble.

Thanks for the help on your end Christine.

Perhaps it might be better if several people stepped forward to volunteer in picking up sketchbooks this year, rather than one lone person having to shoulder that burden.

I've been asked by several board members already to do so and declined at least one, as I didn't want the headache this year of having to lug around a bunch of stuff. However, perhaps that isn't entirely fair. I'll volunteer to pickup sketchbooks and prints for the first 6 people who email me at:

nhill_2001 @ yahoo . com

Please keep in mind that payment in full (that's $25.00 for the print and sketchbook + s/h, which will depend on where you live in the world, so please keep that in mind when figuring the total) must be received no later than
7/13.

Hopefully someone else will step up also, so that we can get every person accounted for. :D

It would be super-cool and I will obviously pay for the shipping and handling and whatev as I'm NY.

I don't think they are posters. I think they are like the prints from last year which are on heavy stock and can't be rolled up into a poster tube.

I could be wrong though. I'm just assuming based on last year.

Does anyone know how big the posters are?

They are not posters but small prints...they are 8 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches...they will fit right into the sketchbook (the same size) so there is no need for tubes etc... We did them small for that purpose!

Those who have not been covered are welcome to email me and my friends and I will grab them for you...then perhaps we could get a list to CBM so she could set aside those books for us to make sure no one gets left out...!?!?

I'd love a copy myself but I am not getting anywhere near San Diego for that convention :( . Maybe Mike will have some Canadian themed sketchbooks at the Toronto Con, Abe Sapien and Hellboy playing hockey and eating Tim Horton's donuts sketches. Or...shudder....Poutine.

If those interested in getting a comic who do not yet have themselves covered could email/pm me that would be great...I am happy to pick up the remaining issues for those folks...

Then we can get a list together and give it to CBM so we will know to have enough for everyone :D

I do live in Canada but am happy to mail these comics...shipping may be a dollar or two more tho cus of where I live...!! I will also need whatever the price of the comic/print is...I believe its $25 total...to be sent to me asap...!! But these things can be sorted in pm ;)

I just wish that Mezco Hellboy "exclusive" wasn't a rehash of the previously released trenchcoat HB, with those Japanese Heads thrown in. IMHO an exclusive should be something very special and unique. This doesn't appear to be really all that unique- at least for the most part.

Does anyone know if these will be sold on line like the Gost of LoJo?

DannyBoy7783
06-29-2006, 10:43 AM
The figure has a new head sculpt. We don't have any large pictures but from what I can tell it is an improvement. I have the cloth trenchcoat HB and I'm still deciding to get it or notl. I was thinnking about making him a paper shirt so he'd look like HB from the art on the cover of the RPG sourcebook. I figured paper would be the easiest way to go because it would make some angles to fit in with the style and I can print out the bprd logo easily.

The figure is up for sale at the mezco site. Club members get a ghost of lojo free with their order. Normal purchases don't. Though everytime I click to buy him I get an error message (I'm trying to buy him through the store, I'm not a club member). Has anyone managed to buy this from the site?

Edit: Just to clerify, the reason behind giving him the black shirt is to make him look a bit more different from the HB w/ coat I already have. I'm trying to get some more mileage out of the figure :)

Therein lies the issue..how can a creator share in the profit from a sketchbook when one person will buy it and download it for 1000s of people who might have potentially bought said aforementioned sketchbook?

07-20-2006, 01:25 PM
I see your point.

DannyBoy7783
07-20-2006, 02:50 PM
If it is too expensive or too hard to get then those thousands of people wouldn't have bought it in the first place. I download all sorts of stuff because I wouldn't buy it otherwise. I've been turned on to many musicians, movies, and comics this way. If/when I can afford to buy the comic or dvd I do. I don't download as an alternative to buying. I download because I wouldn't buy without reading or watching it first.

I say share the wealth!

plut
07-21-2006, 06:47 AM
I wouldn't even say I download stuff so that I can buy the parts that I like. I download stuff because I would never buy (and watch/read/listen) it otherwise. Even the good things that I do enjoy on the screen, when it comes to buying, do I really enjoy it enough to buy it? Most often, no.

It's like I either enjoy something (and in a way steal from the artist)
or I just don't buy it and don't enjoy it. Either way a given artist won't profit from me.

Just flew in from SDCC '06 and boy are my arms tired! :D OK, that's an old one, but I did want to let all those who I had picked up sketchbooks and prints for know that I'm now back and have your items! It will most likely be several days before I'm coherent enough to get a decent Con report posted, but I did want to say that this year absolutely rocked, on many levels!!

Also, I did get the chance to stop by Mike and Christine's table many times (mostly in passing, as Mike was super busy- especially on Saturday), and was delighted to get to meet and interact with Christine specifically (as I'd never officially met her before). What a wonderful and supportive woman she is and I can't thank the Mignola's enough for putting up with my ad nauseum requests for multiple sketchbooks, fielding questions, and in general making the experience of stopping by their table and absolute pleasure. :D

Again, I promise to post an actual report. I just need to rest and collect my whits a bit first.

I don't suppose that anyone has an extra sketchbook? I'd be willing to pay cost plus shipping. My friend that was going to pick that and the print up didn't make it over to Mike's booth until Sunday. He said that all the sketchbooks were sold out by then. I knew this was going to happen. Any help is much appreciated otherwise it's off to ebay for me. :(

There might be some online sites, like for comic shops, that might have them. I'm sure some of the board members can give some links. They may have been mentioned already in this thread much earlier.

hello everyone. It's been awhile

If I had taken the care to check the board more this year I would have known about the sketchbook. Alas I did not, and more over did not go to Con this year. (I DO have a new baby girl...)

I thank all involved for picking up the books for those distant hellboarders and completing what has traditionally been my job in the past. I'm glad it worked out. Sorry that I could not deliver for this year.

Cheers.

I wanna thank Rick Cortes for being an awesome pal and picking up the sketchbook and print for me this year. Yay for Rick!!

Did you guys notice the slightly new take on the coloring of the San Diego print? Dave colored this a bit more like he did Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier. The colors aren't solid or gradient (as they usually are), they're applied with a texture that looks like a dry brush. I quite like it!

:) Jakob

PS. Also, on page 6 or somesuch in Mignola's "Some Drawings" there's this little guy holding a sword(?) in a very phallic way. He's also exclaiming RUNK! which in Swedish interestingly enough translates as WANK or JACK OFF. Neat, huh?

Maybe I can scan it for you. But it's really not that special. I saw the British edition of the same issue and they did their version of these portraits much much better. It's a photo of me by the kitchen table and there are some books next to me and the Eric So and Shawn Nagle Hellboys as well. The photo is full-page and there's a two or three line caption below it. I thought it would've been nice to show more stuff, but this was what they wanted. In the British edition people geeked out much more with their collections.

The card with Hellboy, and the Lucha Libre is not part of that print series. It is really cool, but it was just a freebie from the Dark Horse booth at SDCC. As far as I know Mike has only done 4 prints: 2 SDCC, and 2 Wonder-Con.

I did know that, but it's a similar size, and I keep it with the others, so I kind of lumped it in. Deffo not as nice, though. Looking at them, I notice they're numbered. Yup, just four (so far). I thought there was at least one more SDCC one.

I'd love to see a non-HB print like this. Like Some Drawings, but full illustrations with those great colors. How are these printed--are they lithographs, or just inkjets or something?

The SDCC 2006 is probably rarer b/c it's the best (IMHO).
I like the two 2007s. WC07 has Hellboy doing his Nancy Drew impression.

I'd buy that book. Only pretty recently was I able to finally snatch those cards off eBay. Do you know the Tales Of Lovecraft book cover, RE Howard's The Black Stranger book cover (same as the 2004 Star calendar page) and the (stunning) Corum: Prince With the Silver Hand book cover) and that Doors keyboard player novel cover? Nice.
