The book opens outside the girl’s dormitory at St. Joseph’s Prep. Warren is in his girlfriend’s, Amanda, room and he tells her to keep her voice down or they will get caught. She retorts that she would rather get hot and then tells Warren to take off his shirt. When he does this she sees the welts on his back. She freaks out and tells him to see someone. Warren then rushes out of Amanda’s room and breaks up with her. He tells her that he is tired of her and that he needs a change. The real reason that he breaks up with her is because he want to keep what’s happening to him a secret.
We then see Warren’s roommate, Andrew, cleaning the chapel. He is then approached by Father Reynolds who says that it’s time for his weekly confession. But it is obvious that Father Reynolds is doing more to Andrew than hearing his confession.
Then we see Brandon, who is Warren’s rival, working out. He is getting pumped up for an event that night. A bitter Amanda approaches Brandon. She asks him about the event, Hell Night, where the upperclassmen torment a certain underclassman. She tells him that she knows who the target should be: Andrew. She wants to hurt Warren through Andrew. Brandon asks what will he get and Amanda whispers what into his ears.
Later Warren approaches one of his teachers and asks about birds. He hands the teacher a feather and asks him to identify it for him. The teacher is unable to give him an answer but then tells Warren to read up about it.
The scene shifts to a group of boys standing outside of a building. It is Brandon and his friends and they snatch Andrew from his room. Meanwhile Warren is sitting at his desk reading about molting when he hears Andrew cry for help. Brandon and his group take Andrew to a bathroom where they push him in the shower and they turn on the hot water with Andrew standing under it. But Warren soon comes and tells them to leave Andrew alone. Brandon relents and gives Andrew to Warren. Before they leave Warren punches Brandon.
Later Brandon is in his room talk to Amanda. He tells her that Warren is a dead man. In Warren’s room, Warren looks at Brandon’s back and tells him that he need to do something about the blistering. Andrew then says that it’s a coincidence that both of their backs are messed up. It turns out that Andrew saw Warren ripping up the letter in the last issue and he pulled it out of the trash and read it. Warren stands in shock and tries to talk but Andrew interrupts and tells Warren that he knows what happening to his body.
This issue was very good. We get more insight to the supporting characters. I feel sorry for Andrew! The art was spectacular. Adam Pollina is a very talented man. My favorite panel is where Andrew is cleaning the chapel. There is a stained glass window behind him and he is mirroring the stance of the knight in the window. That was just great! If you haven’t picked up this series yet, I recommend that you do. Either that or pick up the trade.
