View Full Version : FC: "The Lord of the Rings" of the DCU?

Grant Morrison has been quoted (in "Wizard #192" and elsewhere, I'm told) as saying, loud and clear, that Final Crisis will be "The Lord of the Rings of the DCU."
What do you think he means by that? In what ways do you expect LOTR and FC to resemble one another, after all is said and done?
I don't expect them to resemble each other at all except that they're both epic in scope and dealing with a pure form of ancient evil. Aside from that, I'm not expecting any parallels.

That is precisely what he meant, according to some or other interview on CBR or Newsarama.

As I posted in another thread, he probably means that the story of FC would be comparable in terms of the epic scope, themes, spirit, and gravity of LOTR, but not necessarily in terms of embodying the characters or following the events of LOTR.
I remember a review for Babe that said "Babe is the Rocky of all pigs" or something like that. It doesn't mean that Babe fights Apollo Creed for 15 rounds in his own movie, but merely that the reviewer felt that Babe embodied the same spirit of another character. It's the same way someone could say that Shaolin Soccer is "the Citizen Kane of kung-fu soccer movies" and not mean that Shaolin Soccer is just like Citizen Kane but with soccer and kung-fu.

Maybe he means that you need appendixes to really get it?

It's just as self-indulgent?

Brother Eye blows up when his super duper GL ring gets destroyed by Oberon in Victor Volcanium's volcano hideout.
Please, God, let this be how FINAL CRISIS ends.
I wonder...
One possibility is "the world is saved, but the true hero had to sacrifice everything in order to do it."

You definitely win some Internets for this comment.
Ps: Then Hawkman swoops in and rescues him?

End of one era (Third Age for LOTR, Fourth World for Final Crisis), dawn of another (Fourth Age, Fifth World).

If I have to read pages of trees walking, I'm done.

Fortunately, he anticipated this problem, and that's why the book skips a month. So you'll get a one-word balloon recap of the Battle of Earthwood, in which the armies of Apokolips drove the Legions of Trees into the firepits, instead of a 48-page special.
That, and they couldn't get Vertigo to let them use Swamp Thing.

I reckon that he's referring to LOTR being about the theme of failure. Both are set in worlds where evil won. Sauron has the elves and men beaten and outmanouvered - a bunch of hobbits just happen to save the day. Darkseid has already 'won', the war against beings of equal stature, Highfather and the rest - leaving Bats & Supes to handle the load. Already most of the big hitters are being ticked by Darkseid & Libra - leaving us with who as the hobbits? Shiloh, the incarnated Monitor...?

I would be delighted if I never heard the expression "Lord of the Rings" again. Or at least not for the next ten years.

I think it's like LOTR in that he wants it to be critically acclaimed and make a lot of money, even though personally I think it sucks so far.

I think he means that FC will be the most popular, grandest epic ever since LOTR!
I also think he means he's completely delusional.
