hi, i'm completely new to this and a friend recommended the 52 series to me. while i was looking into getting 52 i realised i should go back to the beginning. i would like to start from where it all began but i have no idea where that is. so far i know i need to read:
crisis on infinite earths
infinite earths
52
i know there are waaay more tie ins. i looked in the faq but it wasn't specific enough (I'm feeling real dumb as i'm new to this) for my understanding. is there a list of must reads? is everything available in trade paperback? i read in wiki that different production dates may have slight differences due to minor changes in the content. so does it matter which ones i get? thanks!! i don't know where else to go. i don't want to walk into a comic book store and feel like a total idiot!

muttley: I believe I read somewhere that Morrison will be addressing Batman's "journey" during the missing year post-Infinite crisis. Either within the RIP storyline or after that arc ends. I don't know about Superman. I've read Busiek's One Year Later storyline: Up, Up, and Away. All I remember is that Superman lived a normal life as Clark Kent without powers for a year.
As far as catching up for Final Crisis: don't read Countdown or Death of the New Gods, it will only confuse you. The only thing I'd suggest reading is the Seven Soldiers' Mr. Miracle mini #1-4. (Though it's still not necessary.)
All the Seven Soldiers books were very good IMO, by the way.

hey sakurabomb you dont actually have to go back to read all those "big events" it will actually only confuse you but if you truly must, within 52, at the end of the issue, there is a sort of recapitulation of the "history" of the dc universe, im not sure tho' whether they included this in the tradepaperback
