Like many of you, I'm eagerly anticipating The Dark Knight hitting the theaters in July. I'm also quite pleased that my oldest son (soon to be 5) has inherited his old man's interest in Batman (among other superheroes).

Those of you who have young kids at home know how vital it is to have a box of Cheerios around the house at all times. And my oldest son was extremely excited to see the latest box contains toys from The Dark Knight. (The youngest was just excited to have an endless supply of Cheerios)

But here's my question - was it really necessary to include the "cut smile" Joker inside boxes of cereal? I read somewhere they were making two versions of toys for the upcoming film - authentic and child friendly. Wouldn't a box of Cheerios be an ideal candidate for the child friendly version?

Am I the only one to find this odd?

I didn't know they were making two versions. First I've heard of it.

I may have to get some boxes of Cheerios now though:tongue:

Yes, I think all children should get a 'chelsea smile'.

See, this is the problem with DC / AOL Time Warner. There's no clear cut kids entertainment. They put out a creepy PG-13 or more film about a serial killer clown and they also sell it as a kids toy.

What's next? Watchmen Babies in V for Vacation (http://img178.imageshack.us/my.php?image=watchmenbabiessimpsonsgy2.jpg)?

This is the same company that makes a Teen Titans villain like Dr Light a rapist almost on panel in their big event book. Then within the year or so, they have the same character on a kids show which has a tie in comic.

Of course it ultimately falls to parents to make sure kids read one and not the other. Still, as open as I am, even I find it mildly disturbing that DC has such a huge gray area for its characters. that Batman Begins is such a dark PG-13 and yet the suits still want to market Batman to kids like the Adam West show. That the Teen Titans and Identity Crisis books are so mature, yet Teen Titans is marketed to kids via the cartoon.

Meanwhile, I confess I personally enjoy this kiddifacation of mature things. I saw this in the market and gladly bought it. I was going to get Honey Nut Cherios, but I got regular instead. Creepy cute smiling Joker was inside and I found it hilarious. I love the idea of taking a dark creepy character and making them 'cute'. I love that Super Hero Squad series. I got Punisher and Ghost Rider because it was so opposite of the characters. I can't wait to find Deadpool. While in Japan, I picked up a chibi Carnage figure (http://img467.imageshack.us/my.php?image=copyofdsc00824ef6.jpg). I also have a cute plushie of Guts from the adult content manga Berserk. Then there's Gloomy Bear. The anti-Hello Kitty. He's a designer toy that's a giant cartoon pink bear, with blood on his claws from slashing up his human friend in hilarious old school Tom and Jerry violence.

I don't know how many of these I'd want my kid to see if and when I have any. I'd guess it would depend how the kid is. Some kids are more mature than others.

Now I really have to get a box of Cheerios. Hope they're running this promotion in Canada as well....

That "Chibbi" Carnage is awesome too:smile:
