View Full Version : If We Sleep Together, Would You Be My Friend Forever? Songs You Can't Resist.

Consider this a spin off of Gail's thread.

Anyways, here are some songs that I can't resist:

La Familia by Mirah- Ignoring the fact that the first time I heard this song was during the Grey's Anatomy episode My Favourite Mistake ( George and Izzie--in bed! *shudders, retches*), this is probably my favourite song at the moment.

If we sleep together would it make it any better, if we sleep together, would you be my friend forever? None of us forget about who we are, just take a path and follow it, choose a pill and swallow it--it's not forever we can fool around in the dark.

Miss Sarajevo by U2, ft. Brian Eno and Pavarotti-The song tells of a beauty pageant that is staged while (the former) Yugoslavia is falling apart. Bono uses irony to deliver his message, and posits is there a time? Is there a time for dark humour exhibited by beauty queens, who hold up signs asking "Do you really want to shoot us?" Apparently, there is. So said the people in Darfur, in unanimous agreement.

Making Time by The Creation- Why do we have to carry on, always singing the same old song, same old song, same old song?

E Isso Ai by Ana Carolina and Seu Jorge- A beautiful remake of Damien Rice's The Blower's Daughter. I love how the passion in their voices seems to stir something inside of me, and how it makes me feel. The song, to me, is an example of how music and emotions are a language all their own--able to cross any border and boundary. And I'm thankful for that.

Ti Scattero Una Foto by Tiziano Ferro- The song's not only about having love and lost it, but learning to find and appreciate beauty, in even the most difficult of circumstances.

For you, joy and pain are the same thing. When it rains, houses and profiles will make me think of you, and it will be so beautiful.

E voglio amore e tutte le attenzioni che sai dare, E voglio indifferenza semmai mi vorrai ferire

I've recently found a version of the song that TZN performed at the San Remo Pop Festival. And naturally of course, I've been listening to it over and over again.

Sozinho and Sonhos by Caetano Veloso-The Brazilian Bob Dylan. Except he sang more love songs, he's not as weird and he's waaaayy hotter (at least, ya know, for an old dude).

Do The Panic by Phantom Planet- I first heard this song during an episode of Gossip Girl. It's only natural that this song is on my playlist, considering the fact that I'm prone to panicking.

Daddy Rolling Stone by The Who - They take an Otis Blackwell song and give it an irresistible mod verve. I got a friend named Cody, he's got a girl named Chris. I'm gonna steal that girl though he's twice my size, cos I know how to do it like this.

It's Wasting Me Away by The Electric Soft Parade- Even though the song's about a relationship that's falling apart, the melody is still beautiful enough to make me smile.

La Solitudine by Laura Pausini- I particularly love the live version from her 2007 DVD. The song's lyrics have a surprising amount of depth to them.

I've been so up and down, feeling good and bad, I tell the truth but that's a lie.

I won't give in without a fight.

Leavin' by Jesse McCartney- He's so cute.

Unfaithful by Rihanna- I just like her music in general.

No Air by Jordan Sparks and Chris Brown- I hate American Idol, but I love this song.

Live Forever by Oasis- No matter how down I am, the song never fails to pick me up every time I hear it.

Beautiful Ones by Suede- I love their sleazy glamour.

And of course; it wouldn't be a thread unless I mentioned one Blur song http://www.fanforum.com/images/smilies/eyebrows.gif:

Look Inside America by Blur- It's all right. Or something or other.

My favorite Caetano Veloso songs are "Baby," "Tropicália," and especially "Alegria, Alegria." "Eu tomo uma Coca-Cola, e ela pensa em casamento."

Awesome!

I just discovered Caetano Veloso recently, and I downloaded his first three albums yesterday.

I look forward to listening to them.

And here's a link to a few of the songs I just mentioned:

My favorite Caetano stuff was from the '60s, when he and Gilberto Gil were in the throes of the tropicalismo movement and he wrote weird, edgy stuff that got him thrown out of the country. Most of his more recent stuff has been a little adult-contemporary-y for me.

If you downloaded his first three albums, I think you should have at least a couple of the songs I mentioned. Amazing stuff.

There's a lot of 'em....

"A New England" by Billy Bragg
This is one of those songs that encapsulates what I felt like in high school and college.

"Cowboy Song" by Thin Lizzy
There are a lot of great Thin Lizzy songs and a lot of great examples of Phil Lynott's work as a song writer, and "Cowboy Song" is just one fun ass little tune.

"What" by A Tribe Called Quest
Nice quick song chock full of questions and some great lines. And really, what is channel 9 if it doesn't have Arsenio?

"A Day in the Life" by The Beatles
My favorite Beatles song ever. It's friggin' epic.

"God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys
It may be the most perfect love song ever written.

"Tears of a Clown" by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles
Seriously, this has got to have one of the best intros and basslines in any song I've heard. Just a great, great tune.

"Train in Vain" by The Clash
London Calling is one of those perfect albums, and it's capped off by a great, last-minute-addition pop song.

"Academy Fight Song" by Mission of Burma
This song just friggin' rules. It's noisy and melodic, and that chorus is just great.

"Desire" by Pharoahe Monch
Some of the lyrics and rhymes on this song are pretty conrball (i.e., the penis/pen & sperm/ink lines), but this song just grooves.

"Citi Soleil" by The Afghan Whigs
Great Afghan Whigs song off their last album. It may not be as dark as the stuff off Gentleman, but damn does it have a great hook.

"Dance All Night' by Ryan Adams and The Cardinals
See, this is one of those songs where I can't help but feel happy. It's darn purty and almost atones for Rock N Roll.

"Hounds of Love" by Kate Bush
It's my favorite song off the album of the same name, and it perfectly captures the fear and exhiliration of suddenly falling head over heels in love.

"Evil" by Interpol
This is one of those songs that makes me dance like a happy pseudo-hispter.

"Move on Up" by Curtis Mayfield
If I'm ever feeling down or uninspired, this song picks me up again. Ditto with "Keep on Pushing" by The Impressions.

"Reel" by Jawbox
The song starts out so jarring and diffcult, but when it gets to that sudden bit of harmony in the chorus, everything is worth it.

"The Ice of Boston" by The Dismemberment Plan
D-Plan frontman Travis Morrison writes about twentysomething loneliness like no one else. This is one of those songs.

"Rhapsody in Blue" by George Gershwin
I hear it when I'm in the city, and though it's a corny thing to say, it's true.

"Thunder Road" and "Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen
Such great songs about dead-end towns full of losers, death traps, and last-chance power drives. I can't stop listening to either of them.

EDIT:
"Soma", "Mayonnaise", and "Geek USA" by The Smashing Pumpkins
Dear Billy Corgan, More stuff like this, less stuff like the crap on Machina and Zeitgeist. Though, I'll admit, the Machina II B-sides were pretty good. Thanks.

"Didn't I" by Darondo
Silky smooth like Al Green, but sung predominantly in a falsetto. Just a great soul song.

"Queen Bitch" by David Bowie
I wish I could wake up to this song every morning.

This is one of my favorite songs of all time, and like you, feels really very personally important/meaningful to me. I feel the same way about lots of Billy Bragg's stuff, but especially "A New England," "The Saturday Boy," and "The Short Answer."

I was listening to Joe Strummer's "Coma Girl" earlier, and it made me realize just how much I miss Joe. That was a really sad day.

Agreed. Definitely one of the best songs ever written.

There's something about "A New England" that's just really moving. Maybe it's the fact that it's just a voice and a guitar and has the youthful energy of a confession and a proclamation, but one written specifically for a certain person. I could almost see some guy playing this song for his recent ex-girlfriend for closure--just him on her lawn with his first guitar and a cheap combo amp.

YES.

Also:

Pack it up - The Pretenders Seriously, Chrissie Hynde circa 1981 yelling 'You're the pits of the world!' is possibly the hottest thing ever.

Love's not a competition (But I'm winning) - Paramore Yes, the Kaiser Chiefs did it first, but I'm in love with this version.

Where the Wild Roses Grow - Nick Cave & Kylie Minogue It's so freakin' creepy, I love it.

"Right Back Where We Started From" by Maxine Nightingale
One of the catchiest things ever written, and it was in Slap Shot. Old time hockey!

"These Days" by Nico
The best version of this song. It's just such a pretty, mournful little thing.

"Fuzzy" by The Incredible Moses Leroy
This song reminds me of the friends I made in college through the school paper.

"A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays'" by De La Soul
Hip hop song about rollerskating, and man is it awesome.

"Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved" and "Sex Machine" by James Brown
If you listen to the first song on a loop while jogging, you can do five miles like it ain't anything. The latter is one hell of a feel good song.

"Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears
This was one of my favorite songs as a kid, and I owe it all to the movie Real Genius.

"Natural's Not in It" by Gang of Four
One of my favorite Gang of Four songs. I can listen to Entertainment all day.

"Do the Du" by A Certain Ratio
Like a funky, dancey Joy Division. That is all ye need to know.

"Baby Britain" by Elliott Smith
I need to be in the right mood to listen a lot of Elliott Smith's stuff, but "Baby Britain" is good to go at any time.

"Shoot You Down" by APB
I first heard this song about two years ago, a few months before they released the 20th anniversary re-issue of Something to Believe In. This song has since appeared on a lot of mixes I've made for people.

"Once Around the Block" by Badly Drawn Boy
The first time I heard this song, I played it on a loop for an hour straight. Easily my favorite Badly Drawn Boy song.

"Maybe Baby" and "Everyday" by Buddy Holly
What sweet little pop tunes.

"Permanent for Now", "Flechette", and "Angel Bomb" by No Knife
I only got to see No Knife once, but they played all three of these songs and I was happy. When I think of San Diego, I usually think of No Knife.

"Young Lions" by The Constantines
Such a great song. It's like what would happen if a hip contemporary Canadian band was fronted by Bruce Springsteen.

"I Was a Kaleidoscope" by Death Cab for Cutie
Happy songs that are about sad things. Yeah, I'm a sucker for those.

"Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse" by Minus the Bear
My favorite song by this band. It's got a little math rock going on, but I just like the way it builds from its extended intro into the actual song.

"Butter" by A Tribe Called Quest
Any song with the line "See I am not the one, I got more game than Parker Brothers" is a-okay with me.

"Scenery" by Cancer Rising
I first heard this song while streaming KEXP at work two or three years ago. Man, what a great song about getting away from work and taking in the scenery.

"Apple of My Eye" by Ed Harcourt
When I meet the gal I'm going to marry, I'm going to sing her this song to the best of my ability.

"Between Days" by Red House painters
I like Mark Kozelek's softer side (e.g., "Have You Forgotten" and "Katy Song") but on "Between Days," he goes totally into a lumbering, poppy shoegaze song that is 8 minutes of awesome.

"The Best of Jill Hives" and "Chasing Heather Crazy" by Guided by Voices
It's said that Robert Pollard writes ten great songs everyday when he takes a dump in the morning. These are two of them.

"Regret" by New Order
One of New Order's best songs, and a good lead-off track for the album Republic.

"Ace of Spades" by Motorhead
I think Lemmy needs a Nobel Prize for being awesome. Evidence: "Ace of Spades."

"Thunderstruck" by AC/DC
I usually hate guitar heroics, but the intro to this song is just so damn cool.

"The Get a Way" and "All Medicated Geniuses" by Pretty Girls Make Graves
Their best songs, in my opinion. Too bad they're no longer a thing.

"Song for Myla Goldberg" by The Decemberists
This song became something of an anthem for me when I first moved to New York.

"Represent" by Nas
Yes, Nas. I think I will represent.

"And She Would Darken the Memory" by The Twilight Sad
Since I'm a sucker for shoegaze music, this one's right up my alley.

"Sometimes" and "What You Want" by My Bloody Valentine
My favorite band in the last year of high school and still one of my favorites today. I'm seeing them in September.

More Billy Bragg love from me:

I Keep Faith: From the new album. Best song about unrequited love ever. Beautiful.

From Red To Blue: Forget all your rappers, THIS is the ultimate diss record.

Upfield: Along with the above, from the criminally underrated William Bloke album. Makes me want to run about and... I dunno, be very happy.

And some non-Bragg goodness:

Sage Francis - Jah Didn't Kill Johnny: "But God, God... GOD would never kill Johnny Caaaash". Word.

Maximo Park - Pretty much the whole of the Our Earthly Pleasures album, but especially Books From Boxes, By The Monument and A Fortnight's Time. That must have been one HELL of a break up.

...and finally:

Flight Of The Conchords - Business Time: It is my dream to convince a girl to sleep with me using only this song.

ETA: Almost forgot this one, but it came on the MP3 Player as soon as I hit post:

Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip - Thou Shalt Always Kill: Rules to live your life by.

1.Gladys Knight and the Pips - Where Peaceful Waters Flow
If I had to pick a favorite song, this is probably it. The first single released when they left Motown, written by Jim Weatherly who also wrote the last hit at Motown (Neither one of us) and their next hit, the song that made them mega stars of the 70s, Midnight Train to Georgia. Peaceful Waters is kinda forgotten because it was sandwiched in between those two bigger hits, but I absolutely adore it to bits. Few things relax me quite like this song.
2.James Carr - At the Dark End of the Street
Lots of people know this song which has been covered dozens of times, few know the original. But among the die-hard soul fans, many will list James Carr as their favorite male vocalist. This is one of those songs that can mean different things for different people. As a gay teenager, I could certainly relate to the song's theme of meeting a lover in secret.
3.Mavis Staples - What Happened to the Real Me
Mavis had one of the best voices at Stax records. I saw her perform a couple of times in the 90s and there's sadly little left of her range. As any real soul song, this one is about a human being on the edge. She is pushed so far by a failed relationship she lost her own idea of self. That's some deep shít. And I love the drive of the instrumentation, Stax at its finest.
4.Linda Jones - Fugitive from Love
Linda would have gotten torn apart by the judges on American Idol. Yes, she oversings every song. Yes, her voice is bigger than every song she sings. But that was Linda. She oversang songs, she overlived life. There isn't a single song by her that doesn't sound like she's already got the razor blades sitting by the bath tub. She only lived to be 28, and recorded most of her songs at underground labels that did not have the technical equipment to really capture her voice. Her official biographies usually say she died of her diabetes, but a friend of mine knows her former manager and told me that it wasn't insulin she was injecting... "Fugitive from Love" is actually one of her more restrained songs, believe it or not!
5.The Dells vs. The Dramatics: Love is Missing from Our Lives
I completely fell in love with this song when I first heard it. Two vocal groups who've been around a long time and who are still out there in some form or the other. The concept of this 70s album was to bring back the old "band wars" that preceded the much more tragic gang wars in black neighborhoods. This song was famously sampled by Drum and Bass act Nightmares on Wax.
6.Chuck Jackson and Cissy Houston: Take me back, I'm Sorry
This is from one of my favorite albums of the early 90s, a benefit CD Chuck and Cissy recorded for the Rhythm & Blues foundation, with some of the finest studio musicians. Chuck worked at the Brill Building in the 60s and recorded a lot of songs with Burt Bacharach. Cissy was the front woman of the Sweet Inspirations and has sung backgrounds on more records than anyone I know, from Elvis Presley to Aretha Franklin and Luther Vandross. It's a shame she has so much heartbreak with her meth addict daughter. :(
7.Shirley Brown: Woman to Woman
Another one of the great vocalists at Stax. This song was her biggest hit ever and it kicked off quite the little cat fight with...
8.Barbara Mason: From his Woman to You
When I first heard this song, I went, "oh no she didn't!" several times. From ribbing Shirley about being older to actually telling her she's feeling sorry for her, this song is just wonderfully catty. The fight actually went back and forth a few more times, with Shirley singing songs like "You ain't woman enough to take my man" and Barbara noticing that "You've got the papers, but I've got the man." The punch line came in the 80s, when Barbara had a comeback with a club hit called "Another Man" in which she revealed that the man she took from Shirley is actually more interested in other men, and was playing the both of them!

I Keep Faith: From the new album. Best song about unrequited love ever. Beautiful.

Billy's always had a way with an unrequited love song. This, from "The Saturday Boy" (which gets my vote for best song about unrequited love ever), is one of my favorite lines ever written:

In the end it took me a dictionary to find out the meaning of "unrequited"
