I love all 100 of these songs. Whether they are good or bad they all evoke memories of good times and fun places. Many of you are too
young to have been around for the premier of MTV when they only had a limited number of videos that they played constantly without
commercials. I spent many happy hours with fellow college students in the Student Union with the tv set to that station talking
about life or classes or just chilling.
Back when my girlfriend was an exotic dancer, she used to dance
to many of these songs. She used to have these very sexy tiger
striped outfit she wore for Maneater. She had a pretty cool trench
coat for Private Eyes.
The really bad songs that aren't on here that I used to love were by
DEVO though. I was a bit surprised at the time that Whip It actually made it onto the charts. I thought only warped nerds like
me and some of my friends liked them.

Probably the stupidest 80's songs I actually liked were "Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats (But Ivan....*why* am I supposed to look at my hands?) and "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" by Wang Chung.
The 80's were a weird decade for music...the early 80's probably was my favorite time for music during my life (maybe because I was in high school at the time). But the late 80's were just terrible. That was when the horrible synthesized dance pop took over, and we started getting phoney-baloney crap like the "California Raisins" getting a top 10 album, and Milli Vanilli, and Bruce Willis as a "bluesman." And the advent of Boy Bands *ptui*.

MC something? - It's a Rainy Day, or was that the 90s?
That was Ice MC, which was from the mid-90's. He was part of that mid-90's Eurodance craze that was all over Europe & Canada back then.......Most of the songs pretty much sounded the same, with the female vocal/male rap combo to a dance beat. American radio played about a handful of acts (Real McCoy, La Bouche, etc.), so it wasn't that big in the US (Aside from dance clubs) and Ice MC and the like weren't well known, if at all.
I love a lot of 80's music, so some of the songs listed on this thread I don't consider to be "terrible".......But, songs I like, which I would consider "terrible" (Due to stupid lyrics or sounding cheesy), from the 80's, are:
Eddie Murphy "Party all the Time"
M.C. Miker 'G' & Deejay Sven "Holiday Rap"
Corey Hart "Sunglasses at Night"
Men Without Hats "Safety Dance"
And maybe some of the hit songs by Billy Ocean or The Go-Go's. The only Go-Go's song I consider to be "good" is "Head Over Heels", the rest of their hit songs were really cheesy, but I still liked them.

Speaking of Falco, his version (original, really) of Der Kommisar is horrible. However, After The Fire's version is fantastic.
Just the opposite I think.
After The Fire 's version of Der Kommisar is a weak remake, from a studio band hired to make an English cover of a truly great German pop song.
Falco's original version is a beautiful slice of Pop Beauty.

I don't think "500 Miles" by the Proclaimers was an 80s song though.
And a quick check on my Benny & Joon DVD tells me I am right. Man did I love that movie, and song, and Johnny Depp.
As it turns out it was originally released in August 1988 in, but only the UK and Australia where it became a hit. It was not released in the US until 1993 due to the movie Benny & Joon.
That said I am saddened that people think "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" this is a terrible 80s song.

I actually thought of that possibility after I posted my comment. Then I figured I'd just leave it as is since someone would surely correct me if I was wrong and then I would know for sure. Now I know. And knowing is half the battle. Thank you.
So, was the video (minus the scenes from the movie) from 1988 too?
Oh, and has anyone mentioned "Hello" by Lionel Ritchie? I can totally pass over the song if I were to hear it on the radio, but if I were to come across the music video, I have to watch that sucker.

I-I-I don't KNOW!!!
*falls over sobbing that his music snobbery has failed*
(Though the cheesy visual filters certainly scream eighties.)
I don’t care what people say, the music of the early 1980 was mostly awesome and definitely produced some of the best songs of the late 20th century.
Oh sure, there’s some crap out there, but there’s crap in every era, the truth is that for me anyway, the 80’s were great.
And not just the pop stuff either, the 1980’s were a great time for Rock, Punk, New Wave and of course Rap. So really, in my humble opinion, the music of the 1980’s holds up against the music of any era, and absolutely beats the hell out of the bland, boring and pretentious decade that followed it.
These are All great songs from the 80’s.

But that stuff isn't the point of this thread.

That said I am saddened that people think "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" this is a terrible 80s song.It was big in eastern Canada in the late 80s or very early 90s, or at least with the people I hung out with at the time, well before Benny & June. I know, because after I moved to Ottawa in 89, people used to laugh at me because I listened to this stuff. Then when the song became popular from the movie a few years later, they all suddenly loved it. But I don't think it's a bad song. I still like a lot of their music. Great voices.

The Proclaimers have been huge over here for fucking years. I've seen people seriously claim that 500 Miles should be our national anthem. You want to see a party in Scotland kick off? Play that song. I've injured my shoulder bouncing up and down in a circle, arms round folks, drunkenly singing that song. And the best part? It is crap. It's not their even The Proclaimers' best song. But we do love it so.

"Head Over Heels" - also personal fav Go-Go's tune. Jane Wiedlin and Charlotte Caffey were such hotties back then.
Jane was always my favorite Go-Go. I had major crushes on her and on Charlotte and they probably started my lifelong attraction to women playing guitars. (Charlotte is still one of my favorite guitar players.)
All the Go-Go's look great these days -- I think better than they did back then. Same goes for the Bangles, too, actually. Their comeback album a few years ago was also great.
As for the Proclaimers, Sunshine on Leith, the album with "500 Miles," was a minor hit on college radio in the US when it first came out, several years before the movie. I remember because I owned the CD while I was in high school in the late '80s/very early '90s (graduated in '91), having heard "500 Miles" on the local college radio station. (Billboard says that record scraped the US album chart back on its initial release in 1989, and "500 Miles" was #8 on the Modern Rock (i.e. college) chart in '89). But they didn't have any mainstream success and you sure as hell wouldn't have heard them on Top 40 radio until the song ended up on the Benny & Joon soundtrack 5 years later.
I think my favorite Proclaimers song is either "I'm On My Way" from Sunshine on Leith or "Letter from America" from ... erm ... the album before that. (This Is The Story?). They did a cover of "King of the Road" a few years later that I also really liked.

"Total Eclipse of the Heart" for me. I can't help singing along. Also, "I Eat Cannibals."
Back when "Harden My Heart" was on the radio the first time around, I thought she was singing, "I'm gonna swallow mighty earth." I thought that was totally hardcore. Many years later I realized she was actually gonna swallow "my tee-ears," which was kind of a letdown.

I still have an enduring fondness for the excesses of Jim Steinman.
Discounting Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell (1977), the terrible '80s songs by Steinman that I like in spite of myself are the ones above, as well as "I'm Gonna Love Her for Both of Us", "I'll Kill You if You Don't Come Back", and "Read 'em and Weep", and "Dead Ringer for Love", all from Meat Loaf's 1981 sequel, Dead Ringer."
I also, for God knows what reason, kinda like Barry Manilow's cover of "Read 'em and Weep" and Barbra Steisand's version of "Left in the Dark", which was originally recorded by Steinman on his 1981 "Bad for Good" album, every song of which is still a guilty pleasure for me. The opening of "Stark Raving Love" got recycled into "Holding Out for a Hero."
I even kind of like Celine Dion's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now."

Ah, "Batman: the Musical." (http://www.freewebs.com/batman_themusical/home.htm) It would have been a classic.
I went to go see "Dance of the Vampires" during its very brief run on Broadway. It was supposed to be campy, but the only audible laughter came when Michael Crawford and the female lead began their duet of "Total Eclipse of the Heart." I loved it though. God bless Jim Steinman. Ha! I'll go you one worse:
"We Built This City", by Starship.
PURE craplicious cheeze! Really, its stinks, but like many of the songs on this list, it's made interesting by a bizarre video (I LOVE the part where the statue of Abe Lincoln gets up and sings! And then the band makes archy eyebrows at him!)
In fact... its SO bad that: Blender Magazine ranked it as the biggest stinker ever... (http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2004-04-18-worst-songs_x.htm)
I personally don't take any magazine or online magazine top tens seriously anymore, no matter how serious they make them out to be. That especially goes for Wizards Top Ten, any Tops by Blender, and Time Magazines Top ten most influential people of the year, and Gamespy top tens especially after I wrote one (http://www.gamespy.com/articles/489/489743p1.html).
Be that as it may that song is just plain awful.

Weird Al played a bit of that song on "Hooked on Polkas" funny thing that song actually works as a polka, even though it probably shouldn't.

It's funny to think that the band who made these songs eventually ended up producing an album that gave birth to one of the more experimental sub styles of rock music.
I'd never heard this before, but actually... I kind of like it. I listened to a lot of New Wave music back in the 80s and this brings me back.
ooo. .I LOVE Alphaville.
"Dance w/ Me" and "Red Rose" are great songs too. . .
but this one if my all time favorite by them "Universal Daddy"

Yeah, I love Big In Japan
Though you got to admit the lead singer was pretty damn ugly in that video.
Btw has anybody have "I touch myself" on their list, something tells me we need that up here for it to be a proper YABS thread.

Personal Alphaville faves - Lassie Come Home and Afternoons in Utopia. HEck....there was a lot I liked from their first 2 albums.
My brother was a big fan of theirs...all of his stuff eventually managed to trickle over to my side because he would play it so much

"Let's Dance" was good for Bowie's 80s stuff. It's no "Modern Love," but it's still okay.
And if you say "In Your Eyes" is terrible, you'll make Lloyd Dobler cry

I haveta agree with Infra on both of these....neither are terrible, and "In Your Eyes" is one of Peter Gabriel's best songs ever.

The single worst song and video of that decade has to be this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzpe1Rq6f3o
Awful song. Awful band. Awful video.
Ew. ick. yuck.
But it's really off-topic, because this is not a terrible '80s song I can't resist. It's a terrible '80s song I can't stnad a single second of, from a terrible '80s band that should be swept from the collective memory of the human race. Nothing whatsoever to recommend it.

I'll concede all the others, but Journey blows. The guy can only sing one note, so he substitutes changes in volume. enh.
Damn, "I touch myself" was from 91, so it doesn't qualify.... Ok folks we need an 80's equivalent. Hmmm....I got it!

Not a great song by any stretch, but I can't resist that Tony Thompson drumming.

For some reason or another, I thought about that song fairly recently... the last month or so anyhow.
More specifically, my thought was "That's a song I haven't heard in a long while, and that's a good thing."

I actually have that song on one of my 80's billboard hits cds I got lying around...hmmm, I may rip it one day...when I've got nothing better to do.

Rod Stewart.....what ever happened to that guy? Last time I checked he was getting all sentimental with songs like Lost in You, then Forever Young (which is actually a great song in my opinion), and Rhythm of my Heart.. that last one I think was what? 10 years ago or so?

Did he do the english or the german language version? For some reason, the german version was really big for a couple of weeks during my final year of senior high.

German, of course, which is why it works as a polka when it shouldn’t.

The entire "hair metal" genre, really.
And lemme tell you something; unlike a lot of 80s metalheads, i had no trouble playing "poser" bands like Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Ratt, and Dokken alongside the "poser killer" bands of the day like Venom, Metallica, Slayer, and Death ... watch!

Only he could have produced something so cheesy.
For what it's worth, Steinman hated the Broadway 'Dance.' The original production in Europe wasn't quite so ridiculous. The big difference is originally the Count played things straight, whereas on Broadway, Crawford wanted all the laughs, which made the whole thing, well, rather bad.
I generally like Steinman and his craziness, though.
And speaking of musicals, am I the only 'One Night in Bangkok' fan around here?

Anyone who believes that In Your Eyes is a bad song desperately needs to hear a live version. Like this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGao0UZmHpU&feature=related), with Youssou N'Dour in background vocals. This is what pure joy sounds like.
Any XTC fans out there? I always liked Senses Working Overtime, and Dear God(although I preferred the version by Sarah McLachlan).
