Having just finished Volume 2 of the Scott Pilgrim series I am left wondering what it is that makes me enjoy this book so much. It’s not that it is based in Canada. It’s definitely not that I agree with all the character’s points of view. It might be hard for me to nail it down right now but I do know one thing. I’m really diggin’ this Scott Pilgrim series. I ordered issue one from Amazon and speed through it in about 30 minutes. I ordered the second Volume from a local Comics shop where you get a discount and don’t pay shipping and I speed through it too. I just flipped back through both volumes trying to nail down what it was that I really liked about them and I just can’t quite put my finger on it.
Ok, I know some of you haven’t heard of Scott Pilgrim or even if you’ve heard of it you haven’t seen it around your town and thus haven’t decided to get a copy. Well, I say you should get it so there’s your reason. Scott Pilgrim is your typical singleish 20 something guy with low ambition. He floats through life without a worry in the world and plays in a band. Somehow he overcomes all this and even seems to make out well with the ladies. Scott is far from your just and moral superhero but he does have fun. These books remind me alot of my high school days that were great then but I’d never want to repeat. Fun reading this Scott Pilgrim is.
If you watch iFanboy and I’m sure some of you do, they just did an episode on Scott Pilgrim that you may want to check out. But, for the purpose of this article we just want you to get that even though the idea of reading a young adult, Canadian, sci-fi/fantasy, kung-fu, Dawson’s Creek kinda book might not sound that appealing, especially for you hardcore superhero guys, it’s worth picking up a copy.
The first issue may seem pretty normal. Fun and hijenks, Love and Drama abound in volume one but it does end with a fantasy twist which follows Scott into volume two. I have volume three on order and will give an update as to where the series has gone in a later post. Scott Pilgrim is already through 4 Volumes so it’s not to soon or to late to start reading. There’s also a movie in the works so that’s just more motivation to pick this one up now and don’t forget to come back here and tell us what you thought!
