I've been hearing about this series for years, and only recently came across a reprint of the early issues.

To say that I'm underwhelmed would be-- well, understating.

If you were a fan of it, tell me what you liked, please.

I've got the new TPB on order, I'll chime in when I've read it.

Years and years ago when this was coming out monthly i used to love this series. I thought then, that it was something original and totally different from what was coming out from the big 2 at the time, and being a huge fan of JB's work i lapped it up.

Loved the art, loved the slow moving story that was obviously well thought out and planned and not just dropped onto the page, loved Sathanas as a villian and his origin was something that, all thou i worked it out before it was revealed.... i did too.... i thought was a genuine, enjoyable twist.

I know now that its not all that original, DNAgents anyone, and whilst i havent read it in years....sold my original run on ebay a while back when i found out it was to be coming out in trade form... the trade plopped onto my desk this morning, so im going to read the while blamed thing again...

Im hoping it holds up from memories of over 10 years ago, but little does....

I have fond memories of NEXT MEN, so this is on the TPB pull list. Hopefully that market John Byrne was waiting to help keep the book alive finds its life renewed at IDW...

........now my question about this new collection is "Why the hell is it spelled 'Compleat' on the cover??"

That's the British spelling, IIRC.

At the time, IIRC, there were The New Mutants, and Teen Titans in the big-consciousness mainstream, with Elementals and DNAgents in the backwaters. That Elementals and DNAgests were quickly proving superior to the big-two kid-teams likely needs no further explication; when Next Men appeared, it was very much in the same vein as Elem. and DNA, but written and drawn by John B, which, at the time, was very exciting. The stories were, for the times, far closer to 'reality' than NM or TT, and if they didn't read like Cerebus (and what did, or really, ever has?), they certainly looked nice. And a nice looking, nice reading, John Byrne super team of youngsters was, for its time, a real big deal. As others have commented, it's been rather a long while since, and it's a matter of hope for me, that NM still will read engagingly, even in these late days of many more kid-teams and some even a bit more 'real'.
