Written by Darwyn Cooke; Art by Cooke and J. Bone; Cover by Cooke

Sometime last fall, this mainstream DC superhero fan decided to branch-out and begin to read some non-mainstream titles. I began with Mouse Guard, and soon, I was reading The Walking Dead, Mice Templar, and others. Continuing in this line of thought, I recently picked up a copy of Darwyn Cooke’s The Spirit vol 1 (hardcover) published by DC comics. I have thoroughly enjoyed Cooke’s work on The New Frontier, so I thought I might enjoy his take on this classic character.

When I began reading this book, I was completely unfamiliar with The Spirit’s mythos. Nevertheless, I was quickly captivated with both the art and the storyline, and I could not stop reading. In this volume, Cooke does a good job of introducing the setting, plot, and individual characters before offering and “origin story.” Therefore, when the reader finally comes to the origin section, he is already familiar with the character and the part they play in the Spirit’s life.

Concerning the art…this is classic Darwyn Cooke. The book reminds me very much of The New Frontier in terms of color schemes and page designs. In other words, this book is extremely pleasing to the eye. For me, I enjoy the art in books almost as much as the story, and with Cooke, you get the best in both departments!

I feel that this book might also be a good starting point for people who might want to comic books but don’t know where to begin. To read The Spirit does not require knowledge of continuity, origin stories, or any extra baggage with which a new reader might be unfamiliar. Like I’ve already said, Cooke does a great job of slowly introducing characters, and he offers a great origin story.

Overall, this book is great…I recommend that you get a copy today!!!
