Why does Alan's ring make a firey green glow instead of the normal Green Lantern light?

Because it's not a normal GL ring. Alan's ring is a representation of the Starheart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_ring_%28weapon%29#Starheart).

Awesome, I understand so much more now after reading that page you linked. THAT'S why Jade could go non-ring.
