I've never read DC comics. I've always just read Marvel. I'm considering picking up a few DC titles to read. Any suggestions on which ones I should go for?

I'll probably get Batman. Not sure if there are few Batman books out right now or not.

After that, any suggestions?

Thanks!

Get Manhunter & Blue Beetle. They both rock.

I would suggest Green Lantern and JLA as well.

Green Lantern is written by Geoff Johns and is very well written and the art is always top notch. Additionally the current storyline is the re-telling of his origin and so that is a good jumping on point.

JLA is a good pick because (1) you should recognize many of the characters from just their pop culture status, (2) it is a good team book due to same characters, and (3) the writer is also very good and is clearly fond of the characters. Dwayne Mcduffie is a very underrated writer and does a great job with this book.

A third book would be Nightwing. Tightly written with great art.

Enjoy.

Action Comics is always a solid read, especially now that Geoff Johns is at the reins and Gary Frank's art sure is fantastic.

I would recommend Trinity because it's a self-contained weekly, so it wouldn't be too hard to follow for someone who is fairly new to DC.

If you're into ensemble books, both Justice League of America and Justice Society of America are great for different reasons; the former is a bit more action-oriented and features mainly characters that everyone recognizes on sight, while the latter is more of a character-driven ensemble piece that constantly grows and has a more... family-based sort of feel to it.

Blue Beetle is a good book too. It's currently devoid of a fixed creative team considering that John Rogers recently completed a 25-issue run on the title, so quality may vary, but so far, the reviews have been looking good.

I'll probably get Batman. Not sure if there are few Batman books out right now or not. After that, any suggestions? Thanks!

In terms of Bat-books, you might have to do a little back-tracking if you're going to leap into the current "Batman R.I.P." storyline that's going on in Grant Morrison and Tony Daniel's Batman. There will be a lot less research involved in the more light-hearted, adventure-driven run that Paul Dini has had so far over in Detective Comics. While Morrison's run has been a slow burn leading up to the big event that we're in the middle of currently, Dini has had a lot more done-in-one stories and would probably be more new reader friendly. That being said, both are great books.

Happy hunting!

Anything by Geoff Johns. Action and JSA are awesome right now, and I've heard great things about Green Lantern too.

For Batman, I'll have to agree that Detective is much more new-reader friendly right now. Batman RIP is just really confusing to jump right in without knowledge of the rest of Morrison's run. Nightwing is good now too.

All Star Superman is a must. Definitely go back and follow it from #1.

Blue Beetle is awesome.

The Brave and the Bold is fun too and you shouldn't have a problem starting with the most recent issue, #13, or next week's issue.

Manhunter and JSA. Blue Beetle has gotten great reviews so check that one out too.

Beyond that? Save your money, darling.

You wont go wrong with getting backissues of JSA and running with that.

Action Comics is cracking right now.

I have loved Booster Gold , but Johns is leaving the book so dont know where that is headed.

Agree with Blue Beetle also.

Oh and on Trinity, I would say its too early to recommend it , wait and see.

It might be another Countdown rather than a 52!

If you've never read any DC at all.... you might well get better value by getting back issues and "Showcase presents..." volumes rather than current comics.

I agree with earlier recs for stuff like Manhunter and Jonah Hex. They are good comics. And crucially Manhunter 31, most recent issue, is a good jumping on point because there's a couple of pages recapping events to date, and a new story arc is beginning. Jonah Hex can be started any time... all you need to know is that he's a very fair minded bounty hunter... fair in that he hates everybody, himself included.

But you know what? The 500 page Showcase presents Jonah Hex vol 1 has stories and art that fully matches any current series.... and its very, very cheap. And similarly the late 80's Manhunter series written by John Ostrander and Kim Yale is as good as the current series, and issues can be got for considerably less than modern day comics. Coming to DC "completely fresh" gives you an immense advantage... you've got a vast treasury of old comics to pick from.

Don't go too old though. A lot of the real old stuff just comes off as ridiculous now.

I'd also like to recommend Nightwing. Not sure if anyone else has. 140 is a great jumping on point for this arc. It's also the start of the new creative team. Although I think it's tying into Batman R.I.P. so you might want to sit that out until it passes. Insanely hard to follow.

Get Manhunter and Blue Beetle. The best stories tend to be about the non-big three because the more obscure characters can actually be given character development.

Right now, my DC faves, in order:

1. Justice Society
2. Action Comics
3. Green Lantern
4. Batman

I couldn't think of a #5 :frown:

EDIT: Unless you count Vertigo! Then,

#5: House of Mystery/ Young Liars/ Northlanders

Right on with Young Liars, though I'd slot that in at 1 not 5

Not sure of your tastes, so I'll be completely biased:

Justice Society of America is great, but you may need to do some homework to fully understand the point of all the characters being together. There are like 20 team members right now...

Green Lantern has a great lead character with a growing backstory, but it's pretty easy to get into. When I came back to comics 2 years ago it was one of the first I read.

If you're going to read Batman, then may I suggest Detective Comics? It's really good, and the story arcs are short.

Batman and the Outsiders has been really entertaining.
