View Full Version : Hannibal Tabu Has Crossed The Line
Zombie Superman

I've long found I completely disagree with Tabu on his sense of comic book "taste" and find that he comes off as quite arrogant in his column here on CBR.
I read this week's entry, to find that he considered Action Comics #866 to be "unworthy" of purchase.
The truth is, Action has been truly superb (pardon the pun) since Geoff Johns took over. The writing and art (Gary Frank much more than Kubert) has been top-notch, an a hundred times better than a lot of the "must buy" nonsense that Tabu endorses.
I want to see some admission that this issue is indeed worth buying.
And if you haven't gone out and picked up this issue yet, do yourself a favor. Whether you know nothing about Superman or you are a devoted SuperFan, you'll fall in love with this issue and buy two.

That's pretty much where I stopped reading.
Well, then you and Tabu are in the same category of poor taste and judgment.

So by 'crossing the line', you mean 'having an opinion different to your own'?
Here. I baked you some Entitlement Cakes.
Are you ready to dictate what weather you'd like today?

I've long found I completely disagree with Tabu on his sense of comic book "taste" and find that he comes off as quite arrogant in his column here on CBR.He's entitled to have an opinion and allowed to express as such in the straight-shooting, non-ambiguous way that may come across as arrogance.
He has your taste. You have yours.
I read this week's entry, to find that he considered Action Comics #866 to be "unworthy" of purchase. He also said it was a big surprise, which likely means he hasn't been enjoying the title (I'm a weekly reader and can't remember), but that this one stands out.
The truth is, Action has been truly superb (pardon the pun) since Geoff Johns took over. The writing and art (Gary Frank much more than Kubert) has been top-notch, an a hundred times better than a lot of the "must buy" nonsense that Tabu endorses.Well, he doesn't exactly state what about the comic he felt made it only read-worthy. I doubt it was the art, as that doesn't come up. So, I imagine it was some of Johns's writing, as he does state the Brainiac elements are a bit unclear.
Whether you know nothing about Superman or you are a devoted SuperFan, you'll fall in love with this issue and buy two.Is the fact that I fit into neither of those categories the reason I don't love this issue?

Eh. He's entitled to his (incorrect) opinion.
Really, the Superman books had always been the laziest-written and most boring titles DC had until Geoff Johns came on board and they'll only get better once James Robinson starts.
Also, the art really is gorgeous and I'm not really an art-guy.

Thanks, CBikle. You're right, the books were bad before Geoff came in. I didn't care too much for a lot of Busiek's run, which I thought was weak in a 90s kind of way.
I'm looking forward to Robinson, but it's Geoff's work that really gets me excited.
And the art, inspired as it was by Superman The Movie, was just beautiful. It's a shame that other comics can't look this good and actually manage to remain on time.

How about I bake you some "Creative Cakes?"
I'm sure they'd turn your stomach.

I'm not sure what the purpose of the column is, to be honest. It's just a guy telling what he did or didn't buy for the week, which only seems useful if you know you have precisly the same tendency to like or dislike the same stuff as him.

I just read the article. It seems like Tabu liked the book, but not enough to buy it.
Go figure.

I've found I disagree with him more often than not. I think if you like books that are more "traditional" (Action, Flash, Superman) you'll find yourself disagreeing with him a lot. But it's not to say he's always wrong. At least he doesn't write about the same books all the time.

Honestly, who really gives a frog's flaming fart what Hannibal Tatu thinks? He's (yet another) Guy on the Internet with a Column about Nothing of Any Importance. They are about as rare as carbon.

Where's the creative?
Neither Superman or Brainiac were created by the people working on this issue. Hell, most of the story direction in DC comics these days is editorially dictated.
You may as well be calling an incontinent puppy creative for 'creating a puddle'.
Seriously, even if you had a point, you'd be much better served by addressing your issues rather than calling anyone who disagreed with you names and acting like you've been crucified because someone you admit you don't respect said something mean about a comic you like.
Unlike you, I allow that some people have different taste and enjoy things that I don't. This doesn't make them bad people, and I don't feel the need to act like a martyr or insult people because of it.
You are going to have to realize at some point that people have different opinions to you. If you are going to throw a hissy fit every time it happens, I predict a lot of turmoil for you.

That's pretty much where I stopped reading.
Not that Johns work has been blowing us away on a consistant basis on Action Comics. I do think his best work was the 6 part Return of the original LSH . That was his best arc thus far. The rest hasn't been un-even and I blame the art and Richard Donner for the "Last Son" arc never finishing when it should.

Well, then you and Tabu are in the same category of poor taste and judgment.Ooh, burn. I wasn't expecting you to bust out the A-list material.
How about I bake you some "Creative Cakes?"
I'm sure they'd turn your stomach.Considering your taste in comic writers, I'm guessing actual creativity would be more likely to turn yours.
But hey, feel free to continue to be offended over nothing, if that's what floats your boat.

Considering that I've always found the Christopher Reeve films to be dull affairs with lifeless characters, I absolutely loathe Johns' run on Action (and I love Johns' other books). Reducing the established cast to broad characterizations (Perry White is always angry! Clark Kent is a doof without friends! Cat Grant is a whore!) is also another reason why I find the title's quality to be wildly off the mark, but if you want to equate that with me having bad taste, knock yourself out.

Take this mess somewhere else, boys. You want to talk about the latest issue of Action Comics, there's already a thread for it. You want to continue your pissing contest, do it in PMs, please.
