View Full Version : Roger Stern Interview at Spider-Man Crawlspace
http://www.spidermancrawlspace.com/wordpress/
Arguably one of the top three Spidey writers of all time, Roger Stern talks to Crawlspace about Marvel Team-Up, John Byrne as the artist during his run on "Spectacular", The Ringer, the Juggernaught story, how he got promoted to ASM, and his one-off return to Amazing Spider-Man in 2008
This is the first part of a two-hour podcast interview.

Legendary Spidey writer, Roger Stern just did an interview over at the Spider-Man crawlspace' podcast.
http://spidermancrawlspace.podomatic.com/
He talks about the creation of the Hobgoblin; Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut; The Kid Who Collected Spider-Man; Why Vulture is his favorite villain; and how he now regrets his suggestion that the black costume is alive.
Good listen.

Good podcast, funny stuff about the Hobgoblin.
Bit disapointed to have to wait until probably 2009 for Stern's new Spidey story. The seems to be a bit of a contradiction of statements about the new story, Stern seems to think it's in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN but Breevort (I think it was Breevort anyway) said that it'll probably be outside the main book - I hope that Roger is right!
It's Amazing Spider-Man Family isnt it? That's where DeMatties is writing a story.

I'll definitely check this out later tonight.
Stern's tales definitely deserve a shot in Amazing.
They can always take out one of those pesky Bob Gale arcs if they have to.

It's Eisner-esque!

The Kid Who Collected Spider-Man might be the best Spider-Man story ever put out. It's Eisner-esque! Roger Stern himself corrected me on this once.
It's "The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man"
And it is awesome.

Well, I was asked to write it for AMAZING SPIDER-MAN...and it was plotted to run in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, to be consistent with that book's ongoing continuity.
Of course, Marvel can run it in any title they want...whenever they want. (In July, X-Men: Odd Men Out -- a story I wrote 16 years ago -- will see print for the first time.) Or they might not publish it at all, for that matter. It's their bat, ball, and glove.
But I've been paid for the plot. And the story is currently being penciled. We'll all just have to wait and see.

Your one of the best three Spider-Man writers, I agree with him on that. There's Stan (the man) Lee for No.1, who's the third one?

I can't wait for your next story about Spider-Man.
I can say it's best for you not spoiling your stories, they get more delightful during the read:biggrin:
My favorite style for the Spectacular Spider-Man logo is the first one ever done in the comics
As for me being a fan of Spider-Man for 19 years:
Make Spider-Man a quipper.
Make Spidey a science wiz
Make Spider-Man a winner, not the terrible loser we see currently who can't catch a common thief

Nice interview!
But i could barely hear Roger Stern. Like he was talking while being underwater and fighting a shark or something.

In that case it should be fine if it's published in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN FAMILY, since it caters to about two to three "continuities", including the current one

Oh yeah, can't wait for that - Stern + Cockrum can only be a good thing. If you happen to see this, is Wolverine in the book? I know he's on the cover, but when it's Wolverine, you never can tell... I always wanted to see your take on Logan since hearing about that abondoned plot you and Byrne had for him when you were on CAPTAIN AMERICA, and considering you were editor during what I consider that particular character's best era.
P.S. - I enjoyed GIANT SIZED INCREDIBLE HULK - nice work!

I'll give part 2 a listen. Funny enough, I just picked up ASM #248 a few weeks ago, the issue that has The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man. It was indeed a good story.

Listened to the interview. Loved it. And I'll have to go reread the Ringer story. And I'll add my voice to those who would like to see Roger Stern join the Amazing Spider-Man braintrust. A fan favorite/ elder statesman (though technically Gale is a few months older) is one thing the group could use.
That photo would make a good ASM cover Roger

Agreed.
And everytime someone pitches a Morlun story, Uncle Roger can put a pair of Hulk hands on and bop em one in the side of the head.

Listened to it earlier today... gotta say I'm interested in reading your Spidey story whenever it comes out and I hope you are asked to return as one of the main writers on Amazing!
I do have a question though... I was curious if you could explain your dislike for Venom? I know you thought his design looked funny, but what about the character himself?
Oh there's a smattering of articles by fans and writers over why Venom is a bloody albatross...probably the REAL albatross Marvel ought to address instead of the marraige and parenting.
