There is no other foil for Barry Allen, The Flash, moreso than Professor Zoom. Since Barry is coming back, dare I say that DC will eventually bring back Professor Zoom as the Flash's greatest nemesis ?

I've got nothing against Thawne, but it's telling that his most interesting story was after Barry was dead. Even with the eventual Cobalt Blue revelation, the relationship between Wally and Hunter has generally been more intense and personal than Barry's with Thawne. He's always going to be famous for the neck snap (well, both of them), but I'll go out on a limb and say that Zoom is a more inherently interesting character, with a better motivation, than the Professor. (My opinion, obviously.)

That said, I wouldn't be averse to Thawne returning; I'd just really, really like to see it be for a good reason, not "we need someone for Barry to fight and this is the fastest/most evil guy we could find." Take a lesson from his successor: Zoom's still pretty cool, but the more he hangs around other bad guys and does standard supervillain stuff, rather than tormenting heroes in specific ways designed to make them better, the less interesting he gets. Don't bring back Thawne until someone thinks up a damn good reason, and then make it mean something. Otherwise it just cheapens him as a threat.

I'd like to see Barry go up against some of the villains that Wally has faced over the years since COIE. Barry hasn't gone up against Modern Age Zoom, and he also hasn't gone up against Savitar. Barry Allen vs. Savitar would be one heck of a superspeedster battle.

There are 51 surviving Earths for him to have come from, not to mention the possibility of one who ran away from one of the worlds destroyed during "IC" or "Countdown," whichever snooze-fest it happened in.

Since Thawne is from the future, it doesn't have to be any other iteration, since Thawne hasn't been born yet, and as the Legion has demonstrated, the future is still mutable and fluid. The only way to permanently kill Thawne would be to make certain that he never was born.

Fortunately for everyone, Geoff Johns did a fantastic job making Barry's old Rogues gallery truly dangerous. And something tells me that the new(er) Zoom might treat Barry's return as an opportunity to test the "legendary" mettle of the most famous speedster, and Zolomon is twisted enough to succeed where Thawne might otherwise fail.

Now the really big question is: will Barry have his pre-trial face, or the one (post trial and plastic surgery) that only Iris recognizes?

Barry should have his original face. In the LIFE STORY OF THE FLASH, the narrator (Iris) mentions that the first thing that Barry did upon arriving in the 30th Century was to take advantage of its Plastomorph technology to restore his original visage, which had been horribly disfigured by Big Sir. Subsequently, in that LEGENDS OF THE DCU: COIE SPECIAL in 1999, which took place between COIE issues 4 and 5, Barry appeared with his familiar, original face.

In fact, all appearances by post-trial Barry in the Post-COIE DCU have shown him with his original appearance, right down to the blonde crewcut (which is slightly odd, considering that Barry had given up the crewcut at the end of the 1960s and wore a Robert Redford hairstyle through the 1970s and early 1980s until his death in COIE in 1985).

No one ever said Barry was staying around after Final Crisis ....

I'm sincerely hoping that's the case. Barry's death was one of the few that mattered and had repercussions that mattered. Not to mention Wally has earned the right.

Not that Barry is coming back as The Flash anyway to be fighting Flash villains. I trust we all saw the clues...
