Caught the first episode of this new tv show, mostly because it's nice to see actual horror on television. The first episode was a neat little twist on a vampire story. Delivery was not spectacular, but it's a start. I'm hoping better directors will make it not look so much like a tv show. The next episode will be by the director of The Machinist.

I saw an ad for it in Rolling Stone and got really excited for it. I then realized it aired yesterday and I saw the ad today..

anyways, looks really cool!

I also watched the first episode and it wasn't bad. Mick Garris has been involved with quite a few Stephen King TV projects and he's a competent Producer/Director. The acting was very good and the effects were very good for TV. I look forward in seeing what else they'll give us. I do hope the try and keep the acting above a grade B. The next episode stars Eric Roberts, a genre actor who has had highs and lows. My only beef is that NBC is carrying this series and they have a tendency to load up the broadcast hour with almost more commercials that show content.

I'm with Rick. This was competent, but frankly I hope future episodes are better.
I don't know if this was necessarily the best episode to start out with, unless I assume that they had nothing else ready. You really need to come out with a bang. This didn't do it for me.

Doug Jones stars in episode #9, 'Skin & Bones,' directed by Larry Fessenden, a protege of Guillermo's. And you finally get to see Mister J sans makeup. Well, for most of the time. :D

Yeah...the first thing I said after about 20 minutes was, "This is really boring so far." It's odd that they didn't start with a massive scare right off the bat. Still, I'll tune in for a few.

I'm interested to see that Fessenden short. Thanks for the headsup Helen.

It airs again tonight, for those who missed it.

It was ok, had some inconsistencies in the plot, but was well photographed and
good acted considering it's a horror tv show, prime-time, on national network. I
think it might be even better than Masters of Horror. Supernatural still is the best
show in the genre though ;)

Francesco

Hit and miss. Like this show will probably be.

I couldn't get through even one episode of Supernatural though. (Not sure if Francesco was being sacastic..)

You're right, although I think it was more hit than miss. Not entirely the point I was trying to bring up though. I was trying to bring it up as an example of a higher quality than usual and modern attempt at bringing horror to regular television. Although, maybe because it aired on TNT excludes it.

I think he was being serious. I don't know that I necessarily disagree though. I can't currently think of any recently running horror tv shows that successfully build atmosphere like Supernatural has managed to do, on occasion.

I missed it. I'll make sure to catch the next one.

And call me a dork, but I'm excited about http://www.amazon.com/Friday-13th-John-D-LeMay/dp/B00168OILM/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1212974773&sr=8-1

I've been waiting for that myself. Mostly because I want to see if it holds up. Somehow doubt it.

Anyone ever watch A Haunting on the Discovery Channel? Pretty spooky stuff.

Rick: no, I was being serious - as matter of fact it is one of the few show I follow
up buying the dvd set. Now let me specify one thing: I am not saying
Supernatural is "scary", I am saying it's entertaining, it's fun, like it was X-Files
(in its horror episodes... anyone remember "Home"?). I just love the show. about
being scary, I find that many movies (even if rated R) don't scare me anymore,
so I am not expecting that a tv show, in prine time with commercial breaks, is
able to be anything like scary ;) You want scary? Try to watch Profondo Rosso ;)
SpydaWeb: I remember watching N&D and it was ok but not memorable (as
matter of fact I can't remember one of the episodes - there was the killer vs the
toy soldiers, the rock ghost town, and the writer one.... was the evil painting one
of the episodes?). I still think the big miss was Masters of Horror, considering
thet being on cable tv they could have really brought the A game into it...
E. Spears: I watched it randomly, while drawing pages ;) I think I am more
spookied by the thought that these might be real facts (they say they are based
on real events) than the show itself and its dramatizations.

Cheers,
Francesco

I just thought that Supernatural used too many obvious VFX to be truly scary (or good). You cite that X-Files episode and that was pretty freakin' creepy. Also, there are episodes of the new Doctor Who that are pretty scary. It's not impossible.

I'd like to just have the N&D with the toy soldiers, but I've liked that story since the first time I read it. Sure it changed, but it was still fun.

That is because there is something inherently scary about British children, even when not wearing gas masks.

Episode 2: errr....

I hate to sound like a broken record, but this season 3 (Supernatural)
"Ghostfacers" was way more entertaining (and a tad scarier too ;))
But again that's just my opinion so feel free to ignore it ;P

Cheers,
Francesco

What new Doctor Who? Have we seen the same show cause I can't recall a single episode that was scary.

Highly emotional and suspenseful are probably two words I'd use to describe new*Who, not 'scary'.

But then again, people do have different ideas on what constitutes as 'scary'.

One Doctor Who that comes to mind is the one with the vampire alien statues that only come to life when nobody's looking at them. I found that quite creeptacular. (But I have a statue fear that goes back to when I was 5.)

Last night's Fear Itself was a little better than last but still not quite scary.

I have it on the Tivo. The one last week by John Landis was TERRIBLE. Had great potential but they blew it on bad execution and storytelling. :( Coulda used some of the American Werewolf in London mojo.

The wedding one was a big disappointment. Even if it was funny seeing the cast of Psych used that way.
