Hey I'm collecting the "Catwoman" tradebacks by Ed Brubaker, but I noticed that suddenly he stops wrting them... and some new guy does Will Pfiefer? Except when he takes over suddenly Selina's life gets a lot more The O.C. I looked it up and between Catwoman: Wild Ride (TPB 04) and Catwoman: The Replacements (TPB 05) there's like 20 issues that were not recollected and published in tradeback form. Can someone please explain this to me? I can't seem to figure it out. Thanks!

Ame.

Are you asking what happens in those issues, or why they are not collected?

I don't know the answer to either but it might help to be clearer for someone who does

I want to know if i should keep reading from volume 2 (i've read volume 1) or just skip straight to the best trade. what is the best trade? I like Brubaker but he's often a bit tedious, I really don't feel like reading through the heaps of his stuff, just the best Catwoman will do
.

It would seem that the last of Brubaker's run (#25-37) didn't get traded. The rest of the missing issues were filler stories in between both runs.

DC didn't collect the last year of Brubaker's run for some reason, nor did they collect the first 9 issues of Pfeifer's run with Pete Woods. They just started straight up with the One Year Later stuff.

Perhaps with the series ending they will collect the missing issues so that the whole series is available in trade form.

Everybody has pretty well summed it up. Not every comic run gets collected. They started collecting Brubaker's stuff, decided to stop for some reason, and then started again with OYL. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the missing issues to be reprinted in trade format.

Relentless is excelent, in a depressing sort of way. But you'd probably like it better if you read the previous stories that buildup to it.
Wild Ride is also very good and a bit more lighthearted. Both are from the Ed Brubaker run.

And Selina's Big Score (Darwyn Cooke) is probably the best choice if you're looking for something stand alone, although she only wears the costume in one or two flash-back panels.

I personally found that Brubaker's best work on the title came in the issues not collected, specifically the final 6 or 7.

The ones with the Gulacy art? Wow, I thought those were the weakest of the bunch.

I'm not sure what's wrong with the Gulacy issues between Wild Ride & War Games + 37?

Yes. I loved Gulacy's art--I wasn't a fan of the NuAnimated look they were going for. Found it ugly and unsuitable for a character like Selina.

Absolutely nothing.

How about some omnibus editions for the Catwoman run? (Hell, a man can dream, right?)

Large numbers of the fans of the early issues disliked the Gulacy art a lot. I like Gulacy, I just didn't think this was among his best efforts. It was also in striking contrast with the styles of the earlier artists (Darwyn Cooke, etc.)

My thing is, I thought Brubaker's later work was less inspired, as if he had lost interest or wasn't sure where to go with the book anymore. When he left the book, I remember him specifically saying he'd told all the stories he wanted to tell. The way the drop in wrting quality (IMO anyway) paralleled the change in artists makes me wonder if he really wasn't interested (or comfortable) writing for Gulacy's more "realistic" art syle.

So they'd prefer to see art where Black Mask does unspeakable things to Selena's family?

What does that have to do with art? The artist draws what the writer prescribes.

I'll take cartoony art over art where we see disgusting things happen to good characters!

But it was the cartoony style that depicted Maggie eating her husband's eyeball...

And Gulacy (who does not have a cartoony style at all) would have drawn that same scene probablya lot more graphical than Cameron Stewart did.
