Veteran novelist and comics scribe Greg Rucka says you can't spell "Crisis" without Cris -- Crispus Allen, that is, the latest host of The Spectre, who stars in Rucka's upcoming five-issue tie-in miniseries, “Final Crisis: Revelations”

Greg Rucka: ...last we saw of him, really significantly, where any element of the character was at work, was in [‘Infinite Crisis Aftermath: The Spectre’]...
That's an odd statement for Rucka to make, since the Spectre has starred in two 8-issue miniseries since then: Tales of the Unexpected and Countdown to Mystery. Yeah, the latter may have had Eclipso's logo on the front, but the Spectre was the actual lead character, it seemed to me.

Am I the only one who can't stand the Spectre with a beard?

I find it utterly ridiculous. I mean, he's a ghost, he's supposed to be ethereal as it gets... and he's got facial hair?

I don't know, maybe it's just me. But I really can't stand it.

Nothing significant (in my opinion) happened in the Spectre half of Tales of the Unexpected. I didn't read Countdown to Mystery, but I assume that's what Rucka meant: nothing significant.

It's a lot less ridiculous than him having a big green lantern on his chest and a domino mask.

I admit that, as someone who's had a full beard for more than half his life (my beard turns 26 this summer!), I am probably biased in favor of them.

Technically, the Crispus Allen Spectre has what I believe is called a Van Dyke, but still.

Now, given the costume, chest hair would be something of an issue, I expect.

Oh, and I certainly think that it's past time for a character as immensely powerful as the Spectre to move beyond the "street crime" level, which is basically where he's been operating exclusively (OK, his final fight w/ Eclipso was a bit more than that, but nothing at the levels we've seen before).

Also, he is a legacy character, following in the footsteps of a founding member of the JSA. It's hard to believe that he won't eventually wind up in that book....

Hmm, anyone else find it awesome that pretty much Frank Pembleton is God's spirit of vengence? And you thought being stuck in the box with him at a Baltimore police station was bad. Now he's gone cosmic.

That always used to confuse me. I thought a Van Dyke cover the goatee, but it's the other way around. The goatee is jsut on the chin and is part of the Van Dyke. As can be the soul patch. Though the seemingly nameless hair connecting the mustache and goatee is optional. Right now I myself am sporting a Van Dyke without the full connection.
