View Full Version : Freaking Hardcovers! I hate them.

Why do they release some trades only in hardcover editions? Is it strictly for the money?

Superman/Batman 1 through 3 all released in a TPB... but 4 through 6, hardcover only! I know it sounds lame, but it messes up the look of the display. I show my trades off with pride and even have the bookends. When they force us to by hardcovers it throws the look off... not to mention charge us more for something I like less.

I decided, if they release it on hardcover only (All Star Superman), I will not buy it. Period.

I know.. I am particular.

I hate when people roll out this old crap. The fact that there are bigger problems in the world doesn't take away his right to be iritated by something else. And in this case it sounds justified. Why do the 1st half of a series in TPB then switch to only hardcover? Just a ploy to squeeze more money from people (just like big oil).

Vote with your dollars. Didio (and Quesada) are not going to read our online complaints, but if the sales dip low, they will get the message.

I agree. Besides, for all we know, this guy has already posted even longer rants at other forums regarding "war, hunger, the homeless, price on food, gas, oil etc..." It makes more sense to post about war in some forum that deals more directly with war, as opposed to posting about it in a forum about DC comic books.

no a ploy to squeeze more money out of people would be a weekly series called COUNTDOWN.

It would have been awesome if DC had been brutally honest about their plans. They could have called the series Countdown to Empty Wallet. Each cover could have been the same, showing one hand setting down cash on a retail counter as another hand picked the bills up.

I see where you're coming from. Hardcovers sometimes annoy me because if it's a story that I want to read but I'm not sure how much I'll actually like it... I really don't like spending that much money on it. However, things like All Star Superman and JSA... I'll get the hardcover without hesitation because I know it's going to be good and I'll be giving the book a lot of wear and tear from reading it so much.

But, it's just a matter of waiting it out... the paperbacks will come eventually. I mean, the Infinite Crisis HC came out in September 2006 and the TPB just came out in January of this year. And the All-Star Superman TPB is out in August.

I'm not a fan of hardcovers myself either. The other day at my LCS I saw OMD in hardcover sitting on a shelf, I couldn't help but laugh out loud "There's no F’N way I'd buy that. Putting One More Day in a hardcover, is like putting chrome on a turd!"

Simply put, pretty much everything that's printed in Hardcover will eventually get printed in Softcover.
It may take awhile, but be patient.

If you don't like it, don't buy it, is a perfectly reasonable position to take.

With the exception of odd prestigious editions (like Archives and those Neil Adams Batman TPBs) the only stuff that has hardback, but then no eventual TPB is the stuff that sells really badly. Generally not getting a TPB of those is a blessing.

If you disagree I've got a copy of Batman: Digital Justice I could sell you...

Hardcover is my preferred format, so I don't share this complaint.

But if it comes out in hardcover, it will come out in trade eventually. They always do. (new material, I mean)

It just means it's going to be a bit of a longer wait.

You all can goof on me for wanting the Superman/Batman series in softcover versions but I just found more reason to dislike Dan Dido and the DC people.

So they release Superman/Batman Vol 1-3 in Softcover and Hardcover. They then release Superman/Batman Vol 4-6 in Hardcover only. Now I look on DCComics.com and they are releasing Vol 7 (http://dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=9984) in.... Softcover only!

This really does piss me off. I spent $300 on the Superman/Batman bookends yet I have no Volume 4-6 to put in there.

Seriously, they are idiots... or maybe I am for spending that much on the bookend. You be the judge.

It does seem like a waste to put a hardcover on a half dozen issues of some regular monthly title unless it is something that has taken on an extra ordinary popularity. Doing a deluxe hardcover of something say like The Watchmen makes perfect sense, but doing one on the last six issues of some odd monthly comic seems kind of funky to me.

At least for me, a title that has some trades available is like a gateway to getting into the regular book. If it something that has been printed only in hardcover, I might not end up picking it up, which leads to me not following an on going title.

Personally, the only hard covers I have really thought were cool was those huge Marvel ones with a long run of issues.

Some books I like Hardcovers for (All Star Superman, The Ultimates, JLI), some I like softcover for (Captain America, Detective Comics).

My biggest problem with their HC's at the moment is I picked up Morrison's Batman & Son HC, and god knows how long later is Return Of Ras Al Ghul HC, yet there seems to have been a lot of issues between the two - where the heck will they be reprinted?

That's what I am talking about. I have no problems with hardcovers, but they should be consistent. If they release the entire serious of All Star Superman in HC that makes sense. What wouldn't make sense is if they release All Star Superman 1-3 in HC and the 4-6 in TPB and then 7 in HC... its lame.

Also, to the guy who asked "couldn't you put anything between those bookends?". Of course, BUT those bookends are based on the Superman/Batman series and it looks cooler to have the Superman/Batman books between them.

you DC guys should consider your self lucky, I'm an exclusive trader these day's and i read alot of marvel books, they have 6 formats to work with

- Soft Cover, generaly collecting a single story arc.
- Premier Hardcover, the Hardcover version of the Softcover
- Oversized hardcover, collecting 2 or more Softcover/Premier Hardcovers worth of material. Also includes a larger page size.
- Digest, collecting the Marvel Adventures line, Tsunami titles, Gravity.......... and Ant Man?
- Omnibus, Collecting significant runs, both classic and recent.
- Ultimate Collections, a relatively new format. a cross between Softcover and Omnibus.

I stand by my previous position, that no one is disputing that there are bigger problems in the world, but that doesn't invalidate the fact that he had a legitimate gripe. In other words, next time you cuss out someone who cuts you off in traffic, I hope someone is there to tell you "At least your wife wasn't beaten to death".

I hear your cries.

I'm still waiting for DC to start releasing the G.L. Sinestro War arcs in TPB. It's not even that I hate HCs per se, I just recently started collecting Ultimate Spider-Man in the oversized HC editions after years of the TPBs, because when I order them from Amazon, they're discounted enough that the HCs are actually cheaper than the cover price of the corresponding TPBs. What I really can't stand are the so called "Premiere" format HCs, which seem to have become the first collection format of choice for both Marvel and DC, thus further delaying the release of the TPBs and oversized HCs.
