My local game store has Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect for half price. I'd like to buy one but not sure which to chose.

Buy Mass Effect. Assassin's Creed sucks.

Mass Effect.
I don't think Assassin's Creed sucks, but it's not as good as Mass Effect, and has a serious problem with being repetitive. It's hella fun for the first few hours, but then it starts to drag/get boring.

If Assassin's Creed were a ten-hour game that focused on one really fleshed out assassination, it would've been great. As a game with poor mechanics stretched out over nine "levels" that are all exactly the same, it's garbage. Pretty garbage with a solid engine, but garbage nonetheless.

Honestly, neither one impressed me.

I have both sitting in my cabinet waiting to be fired up for the first time lol...I'm not sure how I'll get on with Mass Effect as I've never really played that sort of game before but I look forward to it nonetheless!

Get both.
Mass Effect was my 2nd favorite title from last year.
Creed is worthwhile simply because it dares to do something a bit different from the norm. Sure it's quite repetitive, but it hints at great things, and it's a good example of what this generation of consoles can do. You'll find that a lot of people weren't keen on the plot. I personally loved the storyline, I think you appreciate it more if you have a good historical grounding in the period.

If you have a good historical grounding in the period, you should abhor the idiotic DaVinci Code Lite storyline they crapped out.

I haven't played Creed but Mass Effect is the whole reason I even bought an X-Box 360. And I loved every second of ME. Some of the side quests become cookie cutterish but the main storyline is great and its great fun to play. If you ever played either of the Knights of the Old Republic games then expect a similar but souped up experience of that in ME.

Mass Effect because it has a great storyline, 2nd to Bioshock i think, whereas Assasins Creed ruined its own storyline by giving away story so quickly I think.
Both have fantastic graphics, gamplay is good in Assasins Creed, but I think Mass Effect is again better.
Plus Mass Effect has downloadable content, so the storyline gets bigger by a few hours every 6 months or so :)
Dunno if that brief explanation helps, lol

Yeah, 'cause video games are always historically accurate.

Mass Effect first. Assassin's Creed second. Both are really good games imo.

If you don't like a lot of talking, don't get Mass Effect. If you don't like a lot of repetition, don't get Mass Effect. That said, Mass Effect is one of the greatest games I have ever played, especially from the standpoint of what it means down the line for video games. Don't get me wrong, there are moments where you think that the game could be a lot better. But the good parts are better than damn near anything. And the nice part is Bioware has acknowledged that the bad parts were kind of crap, but the best they could do at the time, but not for the future.

You know, between Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed, I think Assassin is more repetitive than Mass Effect.

At least you don't have to hear the same goddamn "Thank you for saving me!" speech each time.
Video games in general tend to be very repetitive. The good ones are good at hiding that. Mass Effect mostly has troubles in that the lander driving sequences sometimes make you want to tear your hair out, but that's it. Assassin's Creed, after the first couple of missions, everything where you're not actually killing something makes you want to tear your hair out.

If I had a £5 note for every time I heard an NPC say "I will destroy you" I'd be a very rich man. Hell, almost everybody on Noveria says it!

Thanks for the input everybody. It definitely looks like Mass Effect is the winner here. I knew more about Mass Effect but I only knew of the hype leading up to Assassin's Creed, not that it was a let down afterwards. I've read some reviews and I'll be getting Mass Effect soon.

Mass Effect also has a serious problem of being repetive. All the sidequests are based on one design. It mix and repeat throughout each and every mission. And if you don't do the sideeffect then the game has a shorter playing time than Fable.

The difference being in Mass Effect you can choose how many or how few of those sidequests you do.
In Assassin's Creed, you have to put up with the repetitive nature of the game just to get through the game. Yeah, Mass Effect is short if you skip the side quests, but the bottom line is that you don't have to do them, unlike Assassin's Creed.

The main quest of Mass Effect (encompassing just the main story planets and missions) isn't very repetetive, and there's plenty of great dialogue-driven sidequests to be found just there. The optional stuff, yeah, if you do all of it you notice how repetetive some of those are, though there's a few that are pretty special. Assassin's Creed, on the other hand, if you do the entirety of the first assassination, you have done everything there is to do in the game.
And you've still got eight levels to go.

I haven't played mass effect yet, but assassins creed is a decent game, but as stated, very repetitive. And when I got to the ending, before I knew AC was going to be a trilogy, I wanted to punch somone in the face. I still kind of do actually.

I've played both. I played Mass Effect 100% of the way through. I played AC for about 3 hours and stopped.
So that tells you plenty.
Plus, you get to see BioWare's Twilek Knock off's bare ass if you play it right. HUZZAH FOR BARE BLUE BEHIND!

I haven't played Assassin's Creed yet but I watched someone play for an hour the other night. I felt the game was very pretty to look at but it also looked incredibly boring. Climb a tower, kill a guard, get chased forever by guards, hide, rinse, repeat.

One of the things I like about the game is the music. I especially like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOrDRVwBMP4) one.
