Welcome to the thread that has outlived the title (and original thread) that it celebrates. What originally began as a very early preemptive save The Irredeemable Ant-Man thread grew into the largest subforum thread Newsarama had ever seen, eventually outlasting the title, and turning into a community thread. This is an all purpose general Marvel discussion thread where people can hopefully get to know each other and talk not only about Marvel Comics, but anything else that comes up. This thread had 28,508 posts on Newsarama, and then they went and changed, and it's a mess, so I'm moving it here. Consider this post #28,509.
The original thread in all its glory may be found here: http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=96885
If you're an old friend -- welcome back. If you're new to the thread -- welcome!
Do yourself a favor and track down The Irredeemable Ant-Man back issues, or get the 2 digests, the first of which collects #1-6, and the second of which collects #7-12 -- it's good stuff. If you like IAM, it seems to have become a proven formula that you'll like us too (and often share our interests...it's weird that way).
So question 1) : Do you read The Irredeemable Ant-Man? If yes congrats, you're a wonderful person; if not, then there's no hope for you...UNLESS YOU TRY IAM!
The Regulars:
bebopeva88: Founder, President, dictator, and role model to many. Loves Wolverine, Jim Lee, Bloc Party, and Cowboy Bebop to a shocking degree. Loves Marvel, though it treats him like an abusive spouse, confounded by DC's ineptitude, responsible for shaping the minds of the current generation. Be afraid, oh yes, be very afraid.
Particularly likes: Jim Lee, Warren Ellis, Wolverine, Batman, Cho, Charest, McNiven, Jae Lee, Cassaday, Coipel, Dodson, Cheung, Yu, Bendis, Brubaker, movies, anime, sports (Phillies!), anime, a select group of TV shows, Riley, Bloc Party, Scarlett Johansson, blah, blah, blah, and getting stabby.
Particularly dislikes: the art of Steve Uy, Khoi Pham, Greg Land and Larry Stroman. The writing of nu-Claremont, Way, Austen, Casey and most Pak; Molly Hayes, all Flashes, most GL's, DC continuity, especially the Multiverse and multiple origins, Marvel's recent attempt to put awful creators on things he likes, IGN Comics' stupidity, Pixie, Legion, & Stroman (might as well just assume he's on everyone's dislike list), Aunt May, Loeb's Wolverine, nu-Wolverine origin & continuity
RedRonin: hates Jim Lee's art despite having otherwise good taste in comics; ignores Booster, calls Kernel retarded every 12.7 minutes; surely doomed during the bebopapocalypse due to his Lee hate; only his Charest love may spare him; warns of impending simian doom, prone to shocking outbursts about his hate for PETA. Likes to be coy about his ethnicity, but we all know he's Samoan. Has a strange fixation with Medusa...it's the hair.
Particularly likes: Iron Man, Black Panther, Warren Ellis, Travis Charest, Yu, Aja, Disco Dazzler, primates, Coipel, dreaming of Larroca's departure from IM, Jason Aaron, Kristin Bell, Medusa, Darkhawk, Brandon Peterson, despite his blindingly garish colors and shininess.
Particularly dislikes: Jim Lee's, Uy's, Pham's, Stroman's, and Land's art, Amadeus Cho...the creepy RASL guy, anime, DC's continuity/stupidity, num, Boostered, Twilight, Greg Pak, Legion, IGN Comics' stupidity, Frank Miller, and Larroca on IIM.
Sentry/Void aka Kid Impulse: thinks being British is an occupation, has horrid taste in art, gets wood at mention of JRJR or Bart Allen; used to slurp BKV, but has shifted to Ellis; has turned into nu-S/V, in which most tastes are now reversed (a professed love for Alex Ross! *gasp!*), and is perpetually in a drunken or hung over state; laments his supposed poorness, and inability to buy an umbrella when raining (in rainy 'ol England), or jeans, or anything...but has an iPhone. And a 360. Heh. Actually read Omega the Unknown, earning him copious cool points, as does his Bloc Party love.
Particularly likes: The Spot, Bart Allen, Umbrella Academy, Scott Pilgrim, simians, Ellis -- particularly Planetary and Transmet, The Venture Bros., awful art, speedsters, David Aja
Particularly dislikes: Nighthawk, Longshot, Pixie, good art, especially that of J. Scott Campbell, Hal Jordan, people messing with Bart Allen
Kernel: resident thread Butters; enjoys posting seemingly drunken pics of himself; disappeared for a long period of time only to mysteriously return despite claiming he never left; took like a year and 2000+ posts to finally effing read IAM; used to have a mullet; now can drive and has a job, which he doesn't let anyone forget. Likes raping Books-A-Million.
Particularly likes: Spider-Man, JRJR, mullets, Loeb's Red Hulk and its subsequent insanity, Venom, Kanye West, the Reds & Bengals, "Under the Hood", his Gale hating fetish
Particularly dislikes: book learnin; RedRonin, Num48champ, hardcore Morrison fans, and guys who correct your english and spelling mistakes (founder's note: It's actually "English"), Bob Gale & Freak
Hurnslice: Formerly mysteriously named old guy; resident TV guru who has freakishly similar taste to bebop; only human being alive who likes "Life". Does things that make his nipples bleed, and writes scripts whilst giving play by play updates.
Particularly likes: Spider-Man, the Umbrella Academy, TV and movies, dressing up like Detective Fell, frightening people with his Hurnslicer, "Life", creepy avatars, T:SCC, Jesse
Particularly dislikes: Domo, Larry Stroman, threats to T:SCC
comics91: still hasn't read the last 6 issues of IAM; African-American extra on The Wire due to his Baltimore war zone location; my occasional minion, and Comic News Lad; petulant toddler
Particularly likes: chillin', The Venture Bros., X-Men, Koi Pham *gasp!*
Particularly dislikes: safe cities
num48champ:Firestar lover, sig obsessed, no friends, causes gender confusion, posts here daily, didn't notice arthouse for like 100-odd pages, currently M.I.A...may have asphyxiated at a NASCAR event
Particularly likes: Jean Grey, Firestar, sigs, X-Men: First Class, Nascar
Particularly dislikes: mature comics
arp2008: Perpetually confused/lost guy who is either a trollish performance artist, or a 13 year old...perhaps both. Likes to flirt with dudes on the internet and attempts to use larger vocabulary incorrectly and misspelled so as not to seem like he's 13. Has no idea how to search for things/find out information on his own, and is the new nemesis of RR, usurping Kernel's coveted role.
Particularly likes: Naruto, Afro Samurai, X-Force, Clayton Crain, e-hitting on dudes, not trying new things that are inarguably good
Particularly dislikes: Sentry, Wolverine's prominence in things, Farel Dalrymple's art, understanding references
arthousecrap aka TheMagneticSteve: Secretary of Defense and foreign diplomat; spells things the charming Australian way; appreciates savagely witty wordplay, destroys any and all at battle of the bands; has hand writing like a drunken 4 yr. old girl; prima donna who needs to have the longest title -- it makes him feel special, though in his absence, it no longer is the longest...MUAHAHAHAHA; has my back with Mooninite one liners
Particularly likes: Playing music, ATHF, confusing Australian pop culture references, and uh...playing music
Particularly dislikes: showing up with regularity
Not-Quite-Regular Official Members of the Irredeemable Corps:
Mr. Batman: like a less confused arp2008; clearly, a real pioneer; had a sig/avatar fetish, but liked Jim Lee's art, so that was cool
poppycock aka Monty Cristo: Lover of muffins, poster since page #1
TheGrayHulk: Lover of the 80's, poster since page #1
zeitgeist07: German Ant-maniac who may in fact be German-Hawaiian
alextastic: Late to the party, but boy, can he dance! Has asexual sig and name, futilely attempts savagely witty wordplay.
panicbxmb:Kirkmania supporter ;poster since page 2!
Dragavon: Future Eric O'Grady in training
gorilla_buoy: Fan of Ms. Marvel shower scenes since 1998
Fear: says randomly hysterical insano-things; coined Kernel's new nickname, "Mr. Potato Head", came back REALLY fast from 18th dimension 90 day banishment; cheers on his own stripping fantasies

Particularly likes: bebop*, The Venture Bros.* Futurama*, lots of awful DC stuff, Invincible*, TWD*, Ryan Ottley's art*, Booster Gold, sports*
Particularly dislikes: good things, save for those that are asterisked, mullets

I fully intended to come back and try it, I just can't get in. After being able to get a new name on Live Science and post there, I still can't post on the 'Rama...not that I'd want to though after seeing it/attempting to use it.
If you wanna lock it with the link to here you can, but I don't really care.

I'm fine with a certain amount of thread drift and chat, especially since you guys are just settling in, but there needs to be a base level of Marvel comics discussion for a thread to be in this particular forum.
Thanks.

Yeah, it's really good. It's kind of a '(wo)man on the street' look at the DC Universe a lot of the time, it's off in it's own corner, which makes it more of an event when, say Superman shows up.
It's loosely connected to the larger DCU, she's related to Jack Knight (Starman), she has to deal with the Manhunter lagacy (she's like the 7th or something), her tech guy is a former minor league supervillain, Green Lantern's son Obsidian is a regular in the book as well as the other Azrael that isn't the one that took over from Batman.
Like I said it's a good book, I wish I had the money to get it though, you should check out the trades, if you like stuff like Daredevil, Sleeper and other noir-ey comics, you'll definitely like Manhunter

I think it'll get worse...not necessarily because of PAD's abilities, but because of the absence of Raimondi, the coming of Stroman, and the lineup change...not the least of which seems to leave out Layla and Pietro for the most part, and Wolfsbane completely. Here's a question that hasn't come up in awhile: where would you like to see Eric appear post-A:TI? He's either gonna graduate or get kicked out eventually, so where would you like to see him next? (Outside of IAM V.2, or some solo mini obviously).
I'd like some kind of mini with lowertier characters, kind of like Loners, but without the "heroes wanting to get out of the life/keep getting pulled back in". Darkhawk, Ricochet, and Julie Power would still fit in well though.

I think it'd interesting to see him on Thunderbolts - but that would take some doing - and would take some setting up.
I've really liked him in A:I. The little one liners have been excellent so I'd prefer him kept there.
I'd like a mini and would demand Kirkman and Hester on it. In the style of an 80's Hawkeye mini throwback.

Thunderbolts would be cool. It could've happened rather naturally post IAM -- Tony makes him go there to make right/work off/do penance (no pun intended) for what he's done. It could still work though, but I think the humor Eric would cause would clash a bit with the current tone of Thunderbolts.

It all depends on the writer. Ellis, I don't think, would have taken him & already had his stories figured out. (Ellis doesn't seem like the kind of writer you can walk up to and say, "Use Eric in your current arc and make it work.")
But Eric is so multifacited (jerky) that he would fit in just about anywhere. Which, I think, is the beauty of O'Grady and why he is so culty-loved by those that dig him. He's ruled by his id and speaks to a great number of us.
He just has to be embraced by a current working Marvel writer who feels the same. He's a go anywhere / do anything kind of character and non mutant to boot, the anti Spider-Man.

I still like the idea of him just popping up in random comics at ant size, but for actual character appearances I think either Damage Control by McDuffie and Espin, or another attempt at H4H, which has been rumoured for a while
Marvel just needs to stop with H4H for at least 5 years...how many cancelled attempts can one make before one realizes if you keep running into a wall it's gonna hurt?

The Shocker needs to join the iniative.
Yeah, I've always liked the Shocker. He needs to branch out from the Spidey books and actually not be a chump for a bit, a la what Marvel teased with Electro in NA #1 (and then quickly reverted to haveing Electro be a chump).

Electro is a chump.
And now that I think about it, Eric and Deadpool need a team up. It's not the Odd Couple set up (like Frank Castle & Spidey) it's the Marvel Chaos team up - like a good Wrecking Crew kinda thing. Oh, the carnage!

Electro is cool. I'm with Bebop on this one. I also really like Ult. Electro, though I couldn't tell ya why
I don't know if they would get along. Deadpool has random bouts of insanity. He stabbed his best (and maybe only) friend over a cheetoh. But it would a good book

"Eric O'Grady: A man of very few morals and willingness to lie, cheat, steal, and manipulate in order to get ahead in life, Eric immediately steals the armor for his own selfish plans, which include using his status as a "super-hero" to stalk and seduce women and humiliate and torment others. With his best friend dead, Eric sets his sights on seducing and bedding Chris's girlfriend, Veronica King. The attraction resulted in the two having sex, leading to Veronica King's pregnancy and Ant Man ultimately abandoning her. Despite his attempts to seduce Veronica, Ant Man continuously uses his powers of shrinking to stalk women and watch them in various stages of undress, with Ms. Marvel of the Mighty Avengers being a popular target for his ever-increasing voyeurism."

General X-Factor opinion question:
As far as writing quality is concerned, do you think it's going to...
1. Stay the same.
2. Get better.
I doubt it'll get worse because we're talking PAD here, but the title is sort of running it's course with me and I'm thinking of taking a break from it.
Stay the same. It's always been great, though I feel Messiah Complex kind of cut the legs off the title. They had a big event and in the aftermath every other title got something out of it, except X-Factor, which right now isn't even playing in the "SFX" thing coming up.
So I expect it to stay the same, but I also expect their to be a dip in overall quality, just cause it lost some of the things that made the title what it is.

Eric really isn't as much of a jerk as that article makes out, the comic is more about what a normal dude would do with a super shrinking suit. Would he fight crime, or would he just dick about making ants race each other? It's a very lighthearted take on the MU, if you like Marvel's more comical books like Deadpool and She-Hulk, you'll probably like The Irredeemable Ant-Man

I'm going to have to go with ol' Ant-Man/Taskmaster mini idea. It'd make for a great buddy book. Though I'm always up for more Darkhawk.

Despite his attempts to seduce Veronica, Ant Man continuously uses his powers of shrinking to stalk women and watch them in various stages of undress, with Ms. Marvel of the Mighty Avengers being a popular target for his ever-increasing voyeurism."
...and this series made it to issue 12?!
Ha!
It sounds a lot more lurid than it really was. It's all done in mostly humorous way.

And wrong.

The recent mini was only three issues so I dunno if they'll trade it, but you can probably find it dirt cheap on eBay
Here's a page from #3 as an example of how fun Damage Control is

HAHA! Sounds amazing, I'll have to pick up the trades.

Yes and apparently you have just been given a reputation as a bad speller and someone who cannot use grammar, congratulations. "Y'all" over at X-Cres. were hardly fair to me- but I won't bring it out here, this is their new thread [don't spoil it "y'all"].
You're so persecuted.
No actually:
TIP: You shouldn't.
They've already made fun of Newsarama immigrants and some of them are rude.
Only to you.

Which is better - JLA or JSA? (I've never read either)

Actually I do. More than you in fact.
I was a big fan of Kirkman's Ant Man and was gutted when it was cancelled.
Anyone who appreciates the 12 issues of greatness are OK in my book.
Looking forward to more of his Initiative antics. If anyone can do O'Grady justice it's Slott.

JSA! I love it, much better than the big three in JLA.

JSA is above average, solid superheroics.
JLA is CRAP.

Well in your first comment you didn't contribute anything, you just used it as a ploy to comment on me, I've said numerous times that this looks amazing and yet you still despise me. Don't you have things to do on X-Cres?

BTW, with all the Kirkman talk, I'm so looking forward to The Destroyer -- it seems like it'll in some part fill the IAM hole in my pull as far as fun Kirkman insanity (but this time with a MAX twist).

Off the top of my head, it's about an old superhero who finds out he's dying, and he decides that means it's time to go out and end all of his supervillains in a humorous, over the top way. It's a MAX mini drawn by Corey Walker (who drew 2 IAM issues, #7 & 8, and did the 1st Invincible arc with Kirkman, among other things the 2 have collaborated on). I'm sure someone more motivated than me will post one of the interviews/articles on it along with the preview art, which had The Destroyer punching through a guy's head.

I'm gonna say JSA. Johns has been working his magic, and Eaglesham is awesome on covers.
JLA has been pretty bad, but I like the Injustice League Unlimited arc

...DCBS calls you...
I wouldn't expect it anytime soon...it was originally announced as hitting in Sept., and then the next time it was mentioned it was said to be without a release date, which didn't sound good.

there should be a bell ring sound every time you mention DCBS.
If I opt to stay on multiple singles after SI, I'll give it some serious thought. I get a 25% discount from my LCS as it is, which isn't bad and I don't have to think too much before I go in about what I'm getting and can aford an impulse buy every once in a while.

Bermejo's variant to Astonishing #25 (which I didn't even know was going to have a variant)...pretty awesome. I love Bermejo, and it's nice to see him do an X-Men cover.
Linked, because Marvel's pics are nigh-impossible to post.

Bermejo supposedly has some Marvel project that he's working on, but that may have changed...really looking forward to the Joker stuff he has hitting soon from DC.
An Inhumans project by Bermejo would be the next best thing to a Jae Lee illustrated project (another one), which won't happen, since Jae's busy with The Dark Tower. A DD project by Bermejo would be great as well, but he's done some DD work already.
I like tea.
