View Full Version : X-Men: Manifest Destiny Mini-Series!!

There was a brief mention of a mini-series detailing the X-Men's move from New York to San Francisco on CBR's WW Philly Panel Coverage. But IGN has some more information on the upcoming project. From the sound of it, it will be handled much like the Divided We Stand pair of One Shots. And include work from Carey, Yost, Cebulski, and Young. And extra great news for Iceman fans who's character was set to go into limbo starting with X-Men #500, he's the star of the main storyline that will carry through all four issues. And even better, Mike Carey is the one handling that portion of the story!
IGN Comics: Looking at the mini-series, where does that fit into this scheme? How many issues are readers looking at and who is going to be helming the writing and art?
Lowe: We're looking at a four-issue miniseries that's going to delve into the X-Men's move from the POV of particular mutants. Its format won't be too different from X-Men: Divided We Stand, and we'll be looking at characters who may not get a lot of face-time in the main books. There's one story that's going to run through all the issues (an Iceman story written by Mike Carey) but the rest will be short stories. So there'll be various writers (Mike Carey, Chris Yost, C.B. Cebulski, Skottie Young...) and various artists. The covers are all being done by Humberto Ramos, so you're in for a real treat.
IGN Comics: How will this mini-series tie into the core continuity? Should readers expect any sort of reading order to step into this next phase of the franchise?
Lowe: It ties very tightly with the core continuity, but there's no specific order of the books. But don't be surprised if things happen here that end up being very important to the main books.

There was also these interesting teases dropped:
Lowe: Magneto is coming. Many things Hellfire related. Someone with blue skin is coming back. Young X-Men will feature one of the earth's first mutants. Rogue is coming back.
Someone with blue skin is coming back? Maggott!? And YXM will face off against Selene?

And one of Earth's first mutants is most likely refering to the earlier mention of Greymalkin being and "old" mutant. Lots assumed it meant we had seen him before, but it could have meant he is old in age.

And with more Sinister stuff coming up in X-Men: Legacy, I could see the dangling plotline of Maggott's remaining slug being dug back up. Now if only someone would want to use CeCe Reyes.

I'd vote for Selene as being the "one of Earth's first mutants". Not only is she even older than Poccy, but she's associated with the Hellfire Club, who the Young X-Men are tangling with now.

Mike Carey even teased Maggott over on his website.
XProfessor: "I don't know what Legacy will turn into, and I'll be happy even if it doesn't have any of the characters I love, but wow, if you used everyone I mentioned on a team with Xavier, and Karima too, I'd be ecstatic. And could you throw in Maggott and Forge please, for good measure?"
Carey: "I'm hoping to expand the core cast in 2009, bringing in some characters very close to my - and I think your - heart."
Forge is pretty much already rumored to be heading to Cable.

Fine, if Mike Carey wants Maggot for his highly acclaimed run on Legacy, all power to him. Watching Maggot eat piles of trash will definitely pump up the excitement level in that book.

Aw, man.
I love Mike Carey. I adore the guy, and all of his stories, and all of his rich, characterizations. But twice now, I've handed over my cash for eight-page stories by Mike Carey -- which were good -- but were just about overshadowed by the poorly-written, irrelevant and just completely insubstantial shorts turned in by the other writers.
(And yes, Matt Fraction's Nightcrawler story was a humongous exception. That was one of the best stories I read this year).
I don't want to buy poorly strung together anthologies with 30 pages of filler, to read the 8 pages (or even 16) that are good.
Ok. Rant over.
Carey did say he'd like to bring back Maggott, and he seems to be crafting out his own portion of the X-Universe to work with, so I'd say there's a good chance he'll get what he want.

Bobby did have some important roles in MC. Helping to retrieve the students was one. I wasn't dissapointed with his role there, what with all he had done the previous runs.

Awww...I actually didn't think of that. All things from Weapon X have been wiped from my brain.
But I would love it either way!!! Maggott needs to return as either the somewhat charming hero or some sinister villain.
But IGN needs to quit playin'.
No actual Mister Sinister appearances required.
Speaking of Maggott, that Turner cover is clearly missing him and his friends Merry Marrow and Doc C. Reyes. Including Bishop's damn hankie and not the 90's "All New, All Different" X-Men is criminal. A felony, even.

Yeah, maybe if they'd made Legacy into a maxi series as originally planned but kept Adjectiveless around then we wouldn't HAVE main characters "Not getting much face time" in the main books and we wouldn't have to keep having these one shots and minis to feature them.

Well Maggott was obviously created as a villain because Scott Lobdell thought those flesh-eating creatures would be creepy... but I'd hate to see Maggott coming back as a villain.
He's one of my favorite characters, but he only became interesting when Joe Kelly remade him as the purehearted South African charmer. And Mike seems does very well with voices from different cultures, so it'd be fantastic to see that Maggott again, wouldn't it?

Not really. Cause these One-Shots and Mini-Series are great to see downtime stuff. Stuff that the comics don't really focus time on anymore. It's not like the old days where you had downtime issues every so often. The two Divided We Stand One-Shots were great. It was a shame they didn't do a mini-series there also.

I thought they were less than great. 8 pages is not enough for a decent story.
The student stuff could have been done in New X-Men until #50/Uncanny #500 instead of cancelling and replacing with drivel. Iceman, Cannonball and co could have carried on in Adjectiveless. Still would have been the same theme but with a monthly schedule to flesh the stories out more.
They've given us 5 months of filler in Uncanny...but that's ok 'cos it's Cyclops, Emma and Wolverine centric whilst most everyone else has their book taken away and gets shoved into little stories here and there. Good stuff.

My only issue is that "X-Men: Divided We Stand" wasn't very good.
You can get away with a lot of good stuff in 8 pages.
They just didn't.
I really, really (like, really!!!) love nearly all of the creators involved, but it fell apart in execution IMO.

NRAMA: Fair enough. Nick, who will be some of the key players featured in the X-Men: Manifest Destiny mini-series?
Nick Lowe: X-Men: Manifest Destiny will be structured somewhat like X-Men: Divided We Stand with one key difference—There will be one story that has chapters in each issue. That story centers around one of the first X-Men, Iceman. Other characters are Karma, Colossus, Mercury…
