I think this is two weeks' worth of stuff, if not three:

1985 #1: Eh, not totally on board, if there's a higher concept to the idea I can't find it yet.

Final Crisis #1: Discussed a bit in it's own thread but while it wasn't a home run, I'll see where it all starts heading.

Wolverine: The last part of 'Get Mystique.' Not a great ending to an ok storyline, felt like a bit of a cop-out as from the first issue Wolverine was after Mystique with lethal force then decides to do the 'you don't know me' monologue and not finish her off. Not a bad story but the split-time story in the past didn't amount to enough to help pay-off the main story.

JSA #15 (I think, maybe it's 14. I lose track of numbers now that I'm old. The newest issue.) Not a ton of actual plot but a lot of fun action.

All Star Superman Antoher really strong issue.

Casanova #14 Wonderful final part to this arc. I liked the first arc of this book but I LOVED this second arc.

Hawaiian Dick #4 The regular series isn't grabbing me like the mini-series did.

ALL STAR SUPERMAN #11 - Perfection.

BATMAN #677 - A mixed bag. Some parts worked (the eclectic villain group, the insinuations about Thomas Wayne) and some parts didn't (Jezebel Jet, random thugs breaking into the Bat Cave).

DAREDEVIL #107 - Know how I know Rucka is co-writing this? A hard-nosed female private eye took center stage. It was a fine issue, but . . . c'mon, Rucka.

IRON FIST #15 - I didn't love this as much as the first "Times Past" issue, but it was still a load of fun.

I also got FABLES #73, THOR #9, ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #122, and YOUNG AVENGERS PRESENTS #5.

Let's see if I can remember them all...

All Star Superman #11
Gian Size Astonishing X-Men #1
Action Comics #865
Huntress Year One #2
Young Avengers Presents #5
X-Men First Class #12
Wolverine First Class #3
Fables #73
X-Men Legacy #212

There's a lot of X-Men on that list, considering the fact that I was only reading Astonishing and First Class last year. And Uncanny would have been on that list too if my comic shop had gotten their shipment of that one. There were other comics I wanted, but I had to draw the line somewhere.

So far, I have only read Astonishing X-Men and Wolverine First Class.

My comic shop once again seems to have a rather erratic schedule for getting some books in.

On to the show...

Final Crisis #1: Some stuff worked, some stuff just didn't. There were some scenes that were dissapointing (such as the "death" of the hero, even if he possibly isn't dead and DC is just cynically putting out books about his death), the villains protest march (these guys kill Bart Allen and then expect to get a protest march? Seriously?) and the clunky way some exposition is handled (The New Gods being talked about as if they are your second cousin you see once every 10 years at a reunion)... This issue was also not new-reader friendly... I feel that was a terrible mistake on DC's part considering this is supposed to be a rather important book for them.

That said, I did think the pacing was genuinely good, the art was good and this was the first time the Monitors were actually interesting and not just poor man's Watchers. Still, I was disappointed in this one.

Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men #1: This was a bit of a strange one since we already knew Kitty was MIA due to a recent issue of Uncanny X-Men. Actually reading this issue, it is hard to fully get into it because of the long delays Astonishing had met. It's also been noted that this series has been slowly paced. Judging this issue on its own merits is difficult, as it actually is rather good. Shame about the delays.

Green Lantern #31: I liked this one quite a bit. The revamped origin of Hal works better than the last time DC did it.

Blue Beetle #27: This issue felt pretty standard... Although that doesn't mean I hated it at all. Nice little issue.

Daredevil #107: Expletive Deleted did a good job of explaining how you knew Rucka co-wrote this issue. That said, it was still a good comic.

Thor #9: I thought this was a nice little story showcasing the other Asgardians while Thor is in the background. We could use a bit more like this.

New Avengers #41: The Avengers tie-ins are much better than the actual Secret Invasion issues. Although it was weird to see Shanna and Ka-Zar speak like typical Bendis characters (Spider-Man calling her "Sheena" was funny, though). Does it totally work? Eh, not really but it's not a bad comic or anything.

Young Avengers Presents #5: Probably the weakest issue in the entire mini. An okay story ruined by a typical "feel-good" ending that felt awkward and out of place. Shame because there was some actual potential at the start of the issue.

Iron Man #29: Not a lot to really say about this one. It's a well-done issue for a filler run.

Batman #677: As much as I wasn't wowed by Final Crisis, I actually quite liked this issue. A little annoyed that we have another major Bat-crossover so soon after the Ra's story...

Iron Fist #15: I really liked this issue. Read it. It was quite awesome.

Uncanny X-Men #498: The Scott/ Emma/ San Francisco story felt like it was just killing time. The Wolverine/ Colossus/ Nightcrawler story actually did continue a bit. Still the weakest book at Marvel that Brubaker is writing but still stronger than most super hero titles being published by the big two.

She-Hulk #29: This one is interesting. It feels like PAD is still trying to find his voice on this title and it's probably his best work on this series yet. There's still room for improvement but I think PAD can achieve it.

Here are some of the comics I got last week. Most of those I brought back from a comics convention last weekend (Comic Salon Erlangen (http://www.comic-salon.de/)). I also got my US comics from the past 5 weeks all at once this week (for various reasons), but I haven't even sorted through those yet... ^^;

Final Crisis #1: Very disappointing, in my view. Right now, I suspect scientists are evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of this issue vs. those of Secret Invasion #1. When the results of this scientific study are published, I fully believe that Final Crisis will be found wanting in every way. Secret Invasion provided me with an event that I can easily describe (Skrulls have invaded the super-human community) and emotional stakes that I can readily identify ("oh poo, my sidekick / husband / family heirloom might not be who I thought he / she / it was"). After one issue of Final Crisis, I don't know what's really at stake either plot-wise or emotionally. I should add, in fairness to the book, that I did not read countdown; on the other hand, I only read one Marvel book, and I still could immediately grasp what Secret Invasion was about thematically and emotionally.

Northlanders #6: This issue, or, in truth, it's final panel, made me radically rethink where I believed this arc was headed. That's probably a good thing, because I had been concerned that Wood was going to sacrifice the originality of Sven's character (a dude psychologically stuck between the Orkneys and Constantinople) in favor of a conventional revenge story. I'm not sure everything in this issue worked for me: in particular, Enna's speech to Sven about the importance of cultural identity seems to favor rhetoric over logic, and I'm not entirely convinced that she makes an argument that holds up to scrutiny.

Thor #9: The supporting cast outshines the series' ostensible hero yet again. And I don't necessarily think that this is a bad thing. The overarching plot has kept my interest, but I enjoy the quieter moments where the Asgardians interact with the Oklahomans. Stracyznski appears to have given a lot of thought to how alien gods must appear to mortals (and vice-versa), and the scenes in which mortals meet Gods never fail to fascinate and amuse.

This week, I have been mostly buying:

1) All-Star Superman - excellent, if totally mental.
2) Immortal Iron Fist - awesome.
3) Marvel Adventures Iron Man - cheerful, enjoyable fun
4) Marvel Adventures Fantastic Four - ditto
5) Blue Beetle - a groovy little book
6) Daredevil - excellent as always
7) Batman - not sure about what's going on here...
8) Fables - great stuff.

Immortal Iron Fist #15 (Marvel) - good story by Fraction. On paper, the art chores were in good hands, Kheri on pencils, Jelena & Mounts on color, but never heard of Olazaba on inks. Kheri, I think, was on the Heroes for Hire relaunch when it was good. In this issue, the art was not bad, it just did not fully function as either an interpretation or an outright historic rendering of the times that the comic called for. I think using the art team from HfH would've helped fully realize Kheri's art.

Ms. Marvel #27 (Marvel) - Reed writes a fun story. Coelho did an okay job on art, but I think it was another comic where Sotomayor's masterful colors was the saving grace. You could tell it was kinda heading at points in the cheesecake way, but it was thankfully reined in by someone with good taste. I have no idea what Irene Lee's job of production entails.

Tales of the TMNT #46 (Mirage Publishing) - Berger, Lawson, Fidds & Dooney made a fun book that is part of the old 'City at War' storyline with a decent, but predictible, cliche ending. I enjoyed the first few pages with April and I like the style of art.

Nightmares & Fairy Tales #23 (Slave Labor Graphics Publishing) - Sadly, this is the last issue of the series but it ends on the wonderfully creepy story, 'Song of the Siren', but Serena (story) Camilla (art) and Chenoa (tones). I wish all these ladies the best of luck in all future endeavors.

Batman #677 (DC) - Morrison (story) Daniel (art) Florea (inker) Major (color). The story is perhaps entering the good stuff that Grant can write once in a while, but my complaint about this book was the art. Major was fine, but Daniel and Florea need to step it up. With Tony, I think his choice of depictions could've been better, I mean, all these closeups of Bruce talking about how he is tortured and whatnot but clearly there's nothing wrong with him. He's in peak physical condition and has not a scar on his face or perfect hair. Inner torture? Whatever. Tony doesn't have the ability to draw these things. I also thought an arc of this magnitude would require a more seasoned inker, someone like Sandra Hope.

Burn #1 (Arcana Studio) - This 99 cent issue I missed last week, turned out to be wonderful. Have to thank CBR reporting for informing me about this one. Sanders writes an interesting beginning and created by the very talented Camilla, who also draws it with Whitmire. This is very indicative of Camilla's love of manga but what she brings to her works is something that not many people can, an undertone. All of her works seem to have an undertone to them that hints of a story beneath the story being given. I'll definitely be getting this series now.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch #94 (Archie Comics) - Tania writes a nice little story, the second part to 'Salem's Secret', that is drawn by Thomas (pencils) Amash (ink) Jensen (color). It is silly at first but when Seles shows up, it gets a lot better. The last part of this tale saved for me what I considered a throwaway story with Tania not on story and art.

Crawl Space, Vol.1, xxXombies (Image) - Remender, Dwyer and Moore created this book with Loughridge on colors. The art itself, I don't have a problem with. It was pretty good. That said, the choice of art with what was written was handled horribly. I was warned by the Pulp Secret guys about this book, but it also interested me. The idea sounded novel, a new twist on zombies, which I am now sick of hearing about. The book gets right to the punch on too many of it's shocking moments. There could've been wonderful, entertaining sick moments in this book, but it's not a true horror comic. It's just an immature p.o.s. that seems like it was written with no strong/finished script and had the shocking moments in mind first with the bad story written around them. The best thing about this book was the actual art (not in relation to the story) and the 'extras' covers that were provided in the back of the book.

All-Star Superman #11- Morrison's Luthor is precisely what Singer & Spacey's should have been: threatening yet still ghoulishly amusing. Damn good Super-run we've had so far (particularly Bizarro World & the brilliant #10); probably the best of this decade, and I can see myself digging it out again & again for some time to come.

She-Hulk #29- Bran may have a funny name, but he sure is a tool.

Daredevil #107- The original Gotham Central creative team are reuniting. Need I say more?

Northlanders #6- Good pulpy action, but I wish this were a mite shorter; if for no other reason then starting off with an 8 issue juggernaut like this one seems like tempting the wrath of the Sales Gods.

Dan Dare #6- Garth Ennis is pretty good at space opera, too, it seems. Won't change your life, but so what?

Batman #677- I'm still skeptical about this, but I'll at least stick around to see what happens.

Action Comics #865- Nice art (Carlos Pacheco seems to be rubbing off on his longtime inker-partner-in-crime), but if Johns takes the next 5 issues explaining polo shirt/hot pants & Ollie Queen-beard Brainiac, I'm going to scream.

*Looks at giant pile of comics* Eeep, this could take a while:

The ones I haven't read yet:

Thor #9
Wolverine: First Class #3
X Force #4
Batman #677
She Hulk #29
New Avengers #41
Young Avengers Presents #5
Angel: Revelations #1
Immortal Iron First #15
Ms Marvel #27
Streets of Glory #4
2000AD Prog 1588

And the ones I have read:

1985 #1 - Nothing particularly earth-shattering or anything, but an entertaining read.
Final Crisis #1 - I enjoyed this one. All set up and very little action, but an interesting set-up, particularly that only the Guardians seem to remember the New Gods
Green Lantern #31 - I've really been getting into this arc. It does a great job of simultaneously tying together all the disparate bits of retconning that have been introduced since Hal's origin was first told and still telling a good and engaging story. Can't wait for Hal and Sinestro working together in the next issue!
King Size Hulk - Big disappointment. Three short stories that don't really tell us anything and a big pile of reprints to bump up the price. I'm giving Hulk 2 more issues to actually start answering questions instead of just asking more and throwing in random fights. Jeph Loeb is the comic book equivalent of Vince Russo, and this is very quickly becoming the Higher Power saga.

I also got the trade of Green Lantern: Rebirth, which I loved. Johns writes an awesome GL.

Today was the first time I've been to a comic shop in months (I normally buy trades. The only comic shop I can actually get to is kinda seedy, poorly stocked (they only carry DC, Marvel, Image, and Dark Horse, and almost no paperbacks or hardcovers), and way out of my way. But, for Final Crisis, I made the schlep).

Picked up:

They're both good, but I can't really recommend them as singles. At this stage, you're much better off waiting for the eventual hardcover for Omega. And really, if you aren't already a fan of Star Trek: New Frontier, you're better served catching up with the novels and waiting for the trade.
