The story begins at an old house in the middle of the country. A man that appears to be a priest is shown in a car outside of the house. The priest goes to the house and speaks with a woman. The woman asked him to help her young daughter Mary Margaret. The priest goes to see Mary and they talk. She then shows him her bleeding hands. We find out that her hands began to bleed when she started having dreams. Her dreams contained images of "a boy who's a snowman...one who has fire in his eyes...another who has wings..."

The scene then shifts to Angel in the air. Warren is at a track competition and he just completed the high jump and he breaks the record and wins the event for his school, St. Joseph's Preparatory School for Wayward Boys. The boys then decide to celebrate their win by having a party that night. Then we see Warren in his coach's office. The coach is startled by Warren's high jump, which the coach said was an olympic record, and he is worried that Warren might be taking steroids. Warren becomes insulted and tells his coach that he is clean and he gets cocky and tells his coach that he should be worried about the rest of the team and their lackluster performance. The team overhears him and they walk away from him. His friend Andrew tries to talk to him but Warren just walks away.

Then we see students singing at a service. A girl asks Andrew, who is Warrens roommate, if he has seen Warren. He then retorts that she is his girlfriend, but the are hushed by a priest.

We find Warren in his room preparing to send a letter to his parents. In his letter he tells them that he is going through changes. He is losing a lot of weight, he is becoming stronger, and painful large bruises are appearing like welts on his back. In the letter he asks his parents to bring him back home because he is scared of what is happening to him. He starts to mail the letter, but then he rips it up and throws it away.

As he walks away his girlfriend, Amanda Cobb, calls after him and asks if he's been avoiding her. As they talk, members of Warren's teammates watch them. One named Brandon, the boy whose score Warren beat in the high jump competition, talks about how he should be with Amanda and how Warren seems to get everything he wants.

The story then goes back to the priest and Mary Margaret. The priest ask her for more information and she tells him "He's Worthy". She says that his name is Worthy. Mary then asks the priest if he is going to heal her hands. He then says that he will and "There must be no signs of his good work..." We then see panels of the house. The priest tells Mary to close her eyes and he kills her. Her mother then goes to see what happens and he also kills her.

Warren then wakes up from a dream that he had "bloody cancerous stumps" on his back. He realizes that he is okay. Then he notices something on the floor. He reaches down and picks up a single feather.

I liked this issue. I'm glad we are getting more information about Warren and his life. It appears that the priest is going to be the main villian of the story and that should be interesting. His relationships with his classmates should also give an interesting story. I think that Brandon will have a bigger role in this story.

As for the art, it was good. It is a very different style and I think it's awesome. It seems to fit this book.

Any lover of Angel should pick up this book. I can't wait for issue 2!

There might be a reason they called him "the Avenging Angel"... especially when his origin gets more hype for saving kids from a burning building up until now... so who'd Warren avenge?

I nominate the dead penguins.

Looking forward to this. As one of the 05 with the least developed backstory, I like that Warren's finally getting some exploration. Though I certainly wouldn't mind a series of mini-series devoted to the other four members either. But until then, at least we have X-Men Origins upcoming for Jean and Beast.

I think I'll check this out as well. All the Warren love from the writers lately makes me happy. First Class, X-Force, Uncanny, and his own miniseries. Hell yeah! Come on, Carey, now we're just waiting on you.

I havent read this issue yet but I flicked through it on the shelf and was captivated by the art. I usually like Aguirre-Sacasa stories but Warren didn't really interest me and the price point put me off ($3.99). The art sold me, it reminds me of the cartoon "Belleville Rendez-Vous" (check a clip here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjjZsp2hDxk )

I wanted to pick this up, especially for Pollina, but I wasn't sure how much of an essential read it was gonna be so I didn't. But it really seemed like I was missing out on an intriguing new miniseries. If everyone is still glowing after issue two, I'll do my best to catch up.

Way to be convincing, RG!

It was a nice intro issue, but a little predictable. Maybe it was just b/c there were already so many preview pages out, but it felt like a really fast read. I'm definitely on board for the whole series, so I'm hoping next issue picks up a bit. Also, I like the art. It just feels like it fits this particular story. With no spandex or even NYC, the amount of black/shadows in the art just really grounds it.

The art was my fav part of the issue.

And I read through the book again today and I think I might have picked up on something. Is it possible that Warren's roommate, Andrew, has a crush on him? It was his conversation with Amanda that made me think that.

Andrew: You're his girlfriend---

Amanda: Yeah, and obviously that just kills you---

I think Andrew definately sees Warren as more than a roommate.

Mary Margaret seems to be some kind of psychic... mutant precognitive, or just someone with honest to goodness "sight" through their faith?

Debatable... but she could end up as an "unconfirmed" character in Mutant Tracker...

I think she's a mutant precognitive. Mostly because she said the dreams and hand bleeding started about six months ago. That's probably around the time she hit puberty.

Still, the stigmata thing makes me lean away from her having an X-Gene. It might be strictly a religious thing.

Agh, I'll think about adding her with the green "undetermined" comment in the Tracker.

I just assumed that the stigmata thing went along with her mutation. But "undetermined" is probably best.

I didn't have many expectations from this mini, but gotta admit I enjoyed the first issue. Art is suitable for the story and I am glad they get their hands on Warren this year. I am glad we will learn of his early mutant days.

Along with last events in X-Force and his participation in UXM, Warren seems to get much attention this year and hopefully character development in the books set in current continuity.

Spoilers
she is killed at the end of the 1st issue so not really relevant

I think she is a precognative mutant, the snowman and guy with firey eyes she was reffering to were Iceman and Cyclops.

Reading this issue made me sad about the silliness occuring in X-Force. People seem to think he is only relevant when he has offensive powers. He and his fortune could be used to write him as a mutant Tony Stark, Bruce Wayne or T'Challa.

He and his fortune could be used to write him as a mutant Tony Stark, Bruce Wayne or T'Challa.Yeah, but unlike those guys he's not a genius of some sort (scientific or tactical). I would've preferred him to stay pink/feathered (although I'd also support it if they allow him to change back and forth b/w metal and feathers), but I can't really complain when Warren's getting the most exposure now than he has at anytime in the last decade or so. I mean, he's technically in 5 books right now (Revelations, X-Force, First Class, Uncanny, Ultimate)!
