We see the first meeting of the mysterious Goddess and the aging hippies when they find her wandering in delirium on the streets. She has been confused by the events of M Day and touches the mind of the hippies, changing the way they see each other and the world. The changes continue to spread throughout San Francisco. In the present time the Goddess has just remembered her name – it is Martinique. She also thinks she knows something of the X-Men and who they are seeking.

Meanwhile in Russia Logan is being tortured in an attempt to extract information from Colossus. Peter tells the villain to keep on as he is sure that Wolverine can handle it. Poor Logan can barely stammer out “hey man, thass n’t cool” before he is zapped again. The inquisitor tells Colossus that the X-Men believe in nothing, and then goes on to talk about how he lost true patriots in Russia’s mutant program during the decimation and thinks it strange the X-Men survived while his mutants are now dead. Colossus doesn’t understand why the Russian mutants would have died until he is told without their powers they no longer had purpose and their deaths were ordered. Having established just how ruthless a man he is, the torturer turns to Nightcrawler, who is being held in restraints designed to electrocute him if he attempts to teleport. Nightcrawler manages to make the jump anyway, somehow carrying the electrical surge with him in a manner to short out Wolverine’s shackles. Logan makes short work of the guards and frees Peter but the leader escapes to enter a holding cell and orders the man crouching there to get up. Logan, followed by Peter who is carrying the weakened Nightcrawler, is hot on the leader’s trail and turns a corner in time to see the man being strangled to death by a metal tentacle. The 3 X-Men now find themselves confronting Omega Red.

In San Franciso Emma is disturbed because it has suddenly become easy for her to track the illusionist and she suspects she and Cyclops are being led into a trap. This suspicion is confirmed when they find the Goddess has sent Running Sun (Warpath), Frosty (Iceman), Lady Kitten (Hepzibah) and Angel (guess who) to keep the narcs from ruining their party.

Great move by Nightcrawler but I don’t really understand how he managed to move the electricity with him. Wolverine’s reaction to Colossus was priceless. The hippie names are hilarious, especially as Angel has simply kept the same name!

I wonder when this story takes place because if Warpath is in X-force and in here one has to take place before the other... Or at the same time? I dont know I am kind of loving this arc, kudos to Brubaker.

Great move by Nightcrawler but I don’t really understand how he managed to move the electricity with him.

All things when whittled down to their bare components are made up of atoms, quarks, quantum particles. Still kinda silly because electricity would fizzle as soon as it was disconnected through teleportation but yea, just trying ..

Well, I have a great answer for that, Yoshi. Wolverine's such a great leader in X-Force, that he already taught Warpath how to appear in two places and times at once.

Which... Wolverine is in this issue, too... so... one of these stories takes place in continuity either before OR after X-Force's first mission. And I'm leaning towards before, based off of what starts happening to Warren's wings in X-Force #4. Didn't want to spoil that for anyone who hasn't read it, either.

It is considered spoilerish if it has appeared on previews?

Thanks for the review frog... (BTW was not Astonishing giant size expected for today? )

I think the Godess storyline is stretching too much? I wonder if they are going to take her in?

Quizz: Where and when as she been already depicted as a X-Men member?

I figured better safe than sorry, at least that early in the morning of its release.

Closest I think there ever was to it... was Uncanny X-Men #401-406, when she was a part of Banshee's X-Corps. Albeit, she was doing so from captivity...

Ok, you are right... I tend to forget how early is there

Upsss close, but not. This is horribly fanboyish to say, but it was in an issue of X-Men Unlimitted, inmediatly after the twelve, happening during "The Ages of Apocalypse" (NOT AoA) and depicting a future X-Men fighting in the moon against the Shi-ars and the Apoc. Riders... Mastermind (She was a brunette, so I am assuming she was Martinique) was instrumental defeating the aliens creating a Huge Phoenix ilusion around Jean

LOL @ Warpath's hippie name.

On the subject of an X-Men title that, unlike AXM, doesn’t annoy the hell out of me:

- I really like the Russian story for its handling of their POV; the Russians, perhaps rightfully, are very suspicious that all their special ops mutants lost their powers on M-Day, while the X-Men were mostly spared (indeed, the bulk of the remaining non-villain mutants are X-Men or affiliated with them).

- I’m honestly not sure why the X-Men refuse to give the Russians any info, except maybe out of sheer spite, since it’s not like it’s worth anything.

- Omega Red's appearance has a sort of continuity note reminiscent of older comics; Brubaker explains that after his arrest in Wolverine: Origins Russia pressured SHIELD to hand him over to them.

- The Hippified X-Men were awesome.

All-in-all, this is just a good time. And, sigh, one more issue before Land arrives.

Okay, this arc was looking really dragged out as I was almost completing this issue...

...I mean, we're in 4 issues out of 5 and Emma/Scott haven't even confronted the Goddess? They spent three issues trying to get there, and it's not like she was hiding in some fortress!

The Piotr/Kurt/Logan snippet is just filler, and I would have been happy with it if it wasn't all about 5 pages each issue of random Wolverine-slashing-goons fights. (the robot fight last month was actually great!).

So, I was about to come in here and rant about how the Russia stuff take away panel time which was needed for the San Fran arc to be more "quenching", but then... Frosty the hippie came along! Not to mention Hep and the others as hippies too!

Now I can't wait for the next issue (and, hopefully, more avatar-worthy scans of hippie Iceman)!!!!!

Wow. A cheesecake issue, with men as the porn? I love Choi (not to mention, scary Russian guy was done really well and even a semi-realistic Omega Red you wouldn't want to meet down a dark ally).

Fab issue, building on the fun & character beats - loooved Logan's reaction to Colossus.

P.S. Running Sun & Frosty must forever be, I'd even take Lady Kitten as is.

If memory serves...he attacked a shelter for depowered mutants. Jubilee and Maverick were there, Logan was looking for them, since he realized he needed the carbonadium synthesizer, and Maverick's always got the damn thing... has since the Cold War began.

And of course, Omega Red is the Wile E. Coyote to Maverick's Roadrunner, and tried to get it back. And failed, again, getting taken into S.H.I.E.L.D. custody in his very public battle with Logan, who was trying to stop him.

At least, that's what I remember.

Now THIS is a good X-Title. Hippies aside (Angel = Angel = more Warren hatred by the writers, I say!), this book has it all together. The art is just fantastic, the characters speak like the characters I'm familiar with, and I loved seeing Wolverine's claws actually through someone's neck.

Anyone else thought Omega Red was Sabretooth for a second when he was first seen? Maybe it was just wishful thinking on my part...

Even if this arc has already been dragging for a while, I completely loved this issue. Choi's art is looking beautiful, but the Wolverine's rage panels looked fierce! I am even more excited about his X-Force contribution now.

I didn't care at all for the Goddess revelation, but seeing the hippie X-Men is worth how long this has taken. Running Sun! Frosty! Lady Kitten! Angel (duh)! They're all incredibly fabulous, and you just know hippie Iceman has been up to something gay.

The Russia sroty has been quite entertaining as well, and I keep loving the fleshing out of Logan, Peter and Kurt's friendship.

So I got the issue. Ooo, beefcake. A little too many pages dedicated to just Logan slicing people (yawn) and while I guess I can now see how Kurt transported the electricity (it came from devices attached to him, right?), I still need to know just how he did not get fried to a crisp by 10000 volts? Because Russia has got this love affair with hard-core nationalism going on right now, and if some right-wing nitwit caught this issue of how Russia is portrayed in an american comic, then I bet you 50 euros he would find a way to make it into a shitstorm.

Of course, I'm probably over-reacting, but the cynic in me says I'm under-reacting.

I'm liking the Kurt/Logan/Peter stuff and it's great to see Omega Red again. Looking forward to that showdown!

The hippy stuff is absolutely ludicrous though, as is the fact that the appearances of Warpath, Angel and Logan in this arc clashes with X-Force really badly, since both stories have entirely seperate events happening directly after Messiah Complex...

Overall this arc is far too much filler for far too long (5 months?!) but atleast it's been pretty to look at...Iceman looked great!

It was interesting reading X-Force and then following with this, comparing the art style of the artists who will now be alternating art duties on X-Force.

Not euros, it's roubles!!

Proletarians unite!

No wait, wrong era ..

Little more seriously, non-americans are used by now seeing other parts of the world portrayed as some faeryland stuck in the 1800's with everyone wearing traditional clothes and unable to utter a single damn sentence without some native words crammed in into it. Gott in himmel, it's not like we're not used to being portrayed as backward retards by now.

But the movie is actually a great success in Russia, so the joke's on him.

As soon as Mike Carey told me Frosty was gonna be in Uncanny #498 I was freakin on board. And I sure as hell was not dissapointed. I'm going to get the rest of the run. To think I was gonna wait till #500. The art was great and the writing was fun as hell. Can't wait for the next one.

This issue was cool. This arc is cool. Choi is a pimp and should not leave the X-stables. Brubaker is rockin' though I feel some of Logan's comments were not very "Logany", but no big deal.

Omega Red is pimp. Here's hopin' Bru does some good stuff with him.

'Nuff said.

to it's credit, it's got two stories going, each with a decent sized cast.Maybe, but still, if I were to summarize the San Francisco story it would be: 495- Angel finds hippies, 496-Scott and Emma go to SF to find Angel and Hepzibah, 497-Scott and Emma change clothes, 498- Scott and Emma find X-Hippies (this may not be completely accurate as I don't have the issues on me). If you ask me, all of this could have and should have happened in one issue. Maybe Brubaker should have split the stories into two separate arcs with more story progression each issue.

i feel the xavier arc in legacy is taking way too long! end that shit now!Oh, yeah, I agree, but this is the thread for UXM so I didn't bring it up. Honestly none of the X-Books really appeal to me anymore. It makes me sad.:frown:

Her first appearance was in Gambit/Wolverine: Victims #2, and she had hair. She was introduced at least a year before her sister.

Yeah, before she transformed into "The Goddess" she looked more like she had originally.

I'm overall rather disappointed with the current stories and that's coming from someone who defended the Shi'ar storyline ..
All government ex-mutants killed so they won't ever come back even if the mutant race is repowered and merely to show how ruthless a villain the russian red room guy was and then a couple of pages down the line he is killed off never to be heard again. Pretty pointless, then again maybe pointlessness is all one should expect of obvious filler material.

Why do people keep calling Hepzibah catnames .. she's a skunk, not a feline ..The way I interpret it, her race is 'feline', but she has certain visual traits that look like a skunk's. Which is why Corsair gave her the nickname.

Her race name 'Mephitisoids' refers to skunks, but I see it as yet more homage to Miss Mam'selle Hepzibah. But whether her race is cat-like or skunk-like, it's only resemblance, because she can't be related to Earth cats or skunks.I'm overall rather disappointed with the current stories and that's coming from someone who defended the Shi'ar storyline ..
All government ex-mutants killed so they won't ever come back even if the mutant race is repowered and merely to show how ruthless a villain the russian red room guy was and then a couple of pages down the line he is killed off never to be heard again. Pretty pointless, then again maybe pointlessness is all one should expect of obvious filler material.I think the story so far could have easily fitted into 2 issues instead of 4.

But the death of something over a dozen of mutants we've never even seen can't be considered gratuitous killing like the death of known characters such as the Institute students in the bus explosions. And there must still be millions of depowered mutants left who could be repowered if they ever find a way to reverse M-Day. I'm happy that Brubaker addresses how decimation barely affected the X-Men, while the majority of the mutants in the world did lose their powers. I hope he doesn't drop that point.
I'm not that disappointed that the Red Room guy didn't turn out to be this storyline's Big Bad; in fact I can appreciate when they set up someone as the menacing villain, and then chop them down mere issues after their introduction. It usually works better if a brand-new villain is used to do the chopping down, but eh... Omega Red.

One thing: If the old ex-hippies found Mastermind shortly after hearing of M-Day in the news, and Mastermind immediately created her illusion after meeting them (even though the illusion spread slowly), shouldn't the world have noticed the odd change in San Francisco during the months that have passed since M-Day?

I agree the story arc could be told in less issues (even though there are two different stories/plots being juggled) but...I'm seriously having a very hard time believing ANYONE could state this story is badly suffering from decompression and give it a 3/10...yet scored the last arc of NEX 7/10's and above and felt the last arc needed the 7 very-long, drawn out issues it was given. I'm just sayin'--consistency plz.

I start any decompressed story with a 5 as a highest score to note the decompression. I can't give a decompressed story as 6 or above since it lacks any substance to go any higher.

Some decompressed stories do have the substance to match, but they are few & far between.
