Two other old characters are making a return. One I'm happy to see, the other is a big 'meh'. You can guess which is which.

With multiple cutscenes approaching the ninety-minute mark, they might have brought back the entire cast. What a bunch of fail.

That particular myth has been debunked. There's a thread about it right here on the board.

I'd hazzard a guess there the same ones I have identical feelings over.

Thought that Mei Ling was in an accident. Which usually means she died. That's cool though. I missed her.

The one isn't all that surprising. Raiden's back, and she's an important, if annoying bit of his baggage. The other is a surprise, especially since she wasn't in MGS2.

She was in MGS2 in a Codec scene.

The scene was an easter egg, though she was directly mentioned by Otakon during a codec scene as to being working for their group as a hacker.

Dudes, I expected Sorrow-level of unexpected, not two characters I could expect to still be alive and supporting from behind the scenes.

Still looking forward to playing this. Whether it's in a month or in a few years, I don't know.

Yeah, no big surprise or anything, in fact, Mei Lang was confirmed from the get go I believe. Rosemary wasn't, but it isn't all that surprising.

Not like I set it up to be a big revelation. I basically said 'well well, lookee who else we have'.

Any bit of confirmed info is something useful.

Here's hoping Rose keeps her nagging to a minmum. She's one of the few bad things MGS has produced.

Wow, two characters you interacted with through the codec are coming back.
This is exciting and life changing news.
I'm kinda sick about hearing about the cut scenes and whether or not this game is coming to the 360. The story is going to feature lots of location and sanity innapropriate monologues with questionable translation, i just want to know if the gameplay has changed.

How is it that all codec calls go something like this?

Colonel: Snake, the Macguffin is located near the really obvious thing.
Snake: The really obvious thing?
Colonel: Yes Snake, the really obvious thing.
Snake: Hmmm, I guess I should look out for a really obvious thing.

The people on Codec are getting paid by the minute, and Snake's playing along with them.

Well yeah, it's only my fault that I wanted The Sorrow to come back. :p

The Sorrow's dead, man, and less than mobile. Unless Philanthropy makes a pit stop in a specific part of Russia, it ain't happening.

....

Now I'm wondering if he goes through Russia at some point.

Basically, it's so anyone can get through the game. Most of the codec convos like the one you described only happen when you call people yourself. It's basically the game's way of giving you a strategy guide.

Same here. Couldn't care less about Raiden and whatever (and whoever) it is he brings along.

It's a shame the hate Raiden gets. He's a very well-done, fleshed-out character.

Ooooh! Contraversial.

I personally didn't like him at all. MGS is a warrior's tale, it starts with Big Boss, and ends with MGS4. Raiden simply isn't "warrior" enough to have a revered place in the plot, fleshed out or not!

Raiden not a warrior? You're kidding, right?

The guy spent his childhood as a soldier, earning a reputation as a brutal killer. Throughout the game he takes on and destroys a jet plane. Defeats Vamp(someone who could have killed Snake if he wanted to). Kills one of the Snake brothers. Faces multiple Metal gears at once.

Just because he had blonde hair and a high-pitched voice doesn't mean he's not a warrior. He was essentially bred to be a warrior, both as a child by Solidus and by the Patriots in the S3 Plan.

Raiden fits very closely in one of the major themes of Metal Gear Solid: soldiers being used, controlled, and discarded by the government.

Give the guy a break. He had a messed up childhood, and still couldn't get over it. I don't like him either, but damn. He's still a kid. (In a veteran's point of view at least)

Raiden seemed to "get over it" just fine in the end.

He cast off his shackles, decided to take charge of his own life, and finally allowed himself to commit to Rose.

Maybe it's because I played Solid 2 first, but I never saw where the Raiden hate was coming from. I'll admit, I was surprised that there wasn't an option to play through Snake's part of the story, but I don't recall anything that would make Raiden so hated.

That's the issue I have with Raiden. I'm a very "visual" guy, and what I see and hear from Raiden doesn't -in any way- match up with what we now know about Raiden (that he was a child soldier, etc). He's very much of the "fresh faced rookie" archetype, and, the beginning of his story arc would suggest that Kojima initially intended for this to be the case. Originally, his purpose was for us to see Snake's actions through the eyes of a spectator rather than as a participant.

Raiden fits very closely in one of the major themes of Metal Gear Solid: soldiers being used, controlled, and discarded by the government.
The major theme of MGS2 was passing your genes and your legacy down to the next generation (MGS 1,2, and 3=Meme, Gene, Scene respectivley). There's a bit of what you describe in MGS2, but that's mainly to set you up for 3, since that's what 3 is all about.

That's why said themes. the MGS has several running themes that link the games together. And there's ot just "a bit" of that in MGS2, it's a major part of the story. Raiden's mission and the entire S3 program are all about the Patriots using people and throwing them away. Raiden is as much of an example of that major theme as The Boss was in MGS3, as well as Snake being used to spread FoxDie under the guise of a stealth mission in MGS1.
