View Full Version : So You Think You Can Dance
Season Four begins as usual with auditions in Los Angeles. Our host is the lovely Kat deeley; this week our rotating panel of judges is comprised of Nigel Lythgoe (Simon Cowell's partner in crime), Mary Murphy, and Emmy nominee Mia Michaels.
For American Idol fans, the drill is similar to their auditions. We see several talented people, some kids (auditions are open to people between 16 and 30) who aren't as good as they think they are, and some total freaks like "Sex". Sex has auditioned for the show in the past; he's also tried out for America's Got Talent, and I think he once tried out for Idol. He's skinny, and really hairy.
We had a lot of break dancers and some from the world of ballroom. We had one guy who did some weird facial expressions, and danced on his hands. He thrilled the panel, who gave him one of the night's big prizes; a ticket to Las Vegas for the next round of competition. Several people got these; while others were asked to stay for a session with a choreographer (one of last year's finalists). Those who did well in this session also recieved tickets to Vegas, others were sent packing. Like Idol there were the obligitory shots of losers cursing the judges.
Once we get to the Vegas round (in a week or two) we'll see some great dancing. The show airs Wednesday and Thursday nights on Fox.

!!! The Show is on! The Show that beats all other shows. It is Amazing with a capital Amaze!
We are already in the Top 18! I'm so jazzed. I'm just sick of all those foolish contemporary dances. Too many boring contemporary dancers this year.
I am voting for Susie. She's the only one with a traditional name and spicy latin heat!

Honestly contemporary dance bores me to death. And the contemporary dancers are particularly boring this season.
I was really sad to see Jamie go last week, and I honestly don't get what is so spectacularly great about Will.

He's Debbie Allen's protege. They'll save him for as long as they can; just as they will save Comfort.

I dislike Will. I don't really see what the big deal is about him... And the fact that I won't get Debbie Allen judging while he's still in the cast doesn't help his cause. I was sorta sad to see Susie go, but she was a one trick pony... While I wasn't fond of him, I was surprised to see Marquis get kicked off, I actually liked his solo more than the other ones... I would've gotten rid of tree guy. Anyway, I heart Cat <3 That's all.

As did I. Which was how I knew he'd go. "Tricks" my ass... he's was attempting to make all this boring masturbatory contemporary worth watching. Seriously when four out of the bottom six are all contemporary dancers, America is trying to tell them something.

I think it's been bleah as well. As annoying as Napoleon and Tabitha are they have really delivered some excellent choreography this season, and the addition of the Bollywood routine was really good. But the other areas....the ballroom routines have been weak, the jazz/broadway stuff has been unoriginal and I just think everyone is tired of Contemporary numbers that eventually all look the same. Mia Michaels is annoying as well.

Jessica has a few broken ribs and was not medically cleared to keep dancing so they brought back the last girl eliminated. Which was comfort.

Welcome to season five; tonight we said goodbye to Asuka and Jonathan.
Nigel is teaming up with Paula Abdul for a special tribute to Michael Jackson: http://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/archives/so_you_think_you_can_dance/2009_Jun_29_michael_jackson_tribute
Nigel kept his promise tonight. Last week he told Vitolio that if he wound up in the bottom three again he'd be gone; despite dancing well last night the votes were not with him. Meanwhile, Mia finally learned to appreciate Brandon...
There was a really bizarre momet after Kat had announced that Kayla was in the bottom three. As the show was cutting to commercial, a female voice shouted "Don't cry you little slut!"

07-03-2009, 07:31 AM
Anyone else think that the judges are protecting Kayla and Kapono because they are pretty? In both of Kayla's single performances she stumbled. She did 3 times in her first one and once last night. I understand Nigel's promise about Vitolio, but I think his performance was better than Kapono's.

I am just so glad we finally got to see some en pointe. Melissa and Ade were just amazing.
And I also am not quite sure why Kupono is still there. I think he has a lot of potential, but in terms of performance he just isn't on the level most of the others are.
Kayla is a personal favorite of Nigel's. Next week is the last for judges saving people; after then the lowest vote getter will be sent home.

Well, Phillip's gone home. I do understand why, because he just isn't capable in other forms of dance. Personally though, I would have sent Jason home instead, at least for this week, because although Jason is technically very sound, his performance level just isn't up to the others, whereas Phillip's is for all his lack of technique. At least Phillip will be on the tour, and I hope I can get tickets again this year.

Jason has trouble connecting with the fans; which is why he's been in the bottom so many times.

So, we have five Emmy nominations. One for the makeup department. for Episode 421/422A. Four in choreography: Tabitha and Napoleon for Bleeding Love, Mia Michaels for Mercy, Tyce Diorio for Adam and Eve/Silence and Dmitry Chaplin for A Los Amigos.
I think the makeup department definitely deserves the nod, they do some pretty amazing things sometimes. And I agree with all the nomination for choreography, The Bleeding Love dance is one of my all time favorite dances. Tabitha and Napoleon's work, a lot of it is just very powerful and evocative. Mia Michaels is a genius as far as I am concerned. Tyce, it always seems either I love his work or I want to smack him upside the head. Dmitri I of course we haven't seen too much of his choreography but so far he has a definite talent.

I think what helped Jeanine is she adapted well to all the various styles. That being said she wasn't the best dancer. Also that article is spot on. The best dancer has never won, especially the year Benji won over Travis. That was just insane.

I was really shocked that Kayla was in fourth.I don't particularly like her myself, she is technically extremely good, it is just that to me she has little to no personality to back it up. I adore Evan, oh man do I adore Evan, but again, he is brilliant in his own style but not so hot in the others, that he would be in third place over far more versatile people wasn't quite right and I think a function of him being so gosh darn cute.
I agree that the best dancer has never won, I do think over the years as the show has progressed the viewers are starting to be more educated about what exactly they are looking at and the voting is starting to reflect that. There will always be a component of personality, and rightly so, since what we are judging is a form of entertainment. And it is possible to be technically flawless but have no stage presence, which is crucial to a dancer.

I would tend to agree. And not only the favoritism, but also the way that those who aren't the favorite will sometimes get graded down by the judges when in fact. they had actually shown improvement.
So, next we have the tour of course. I got to go last year, it was quite the show. All the favorite dances plus some new ones. I doubt I will have the money to go this year though. Which is sad, I would love to see the Romeo and Juliet pas duex live.
September 2nd will be a special highlighting the favorite dances from past seasons. Season 6 starts on September 9th. And of course Fame is coming out, with Kherington in one of the roles. And of course Debbie Allen as the principal.

Oo! I'm in for this one. I never get to discuss this show with anyone. You should see the looks I get when I tell my friends I watch, and the Fox boards are... not a viable option for an educated person. Ugh.
Travis absolutely should have won year three.
I thought Katee was a bit better than Josh, but I don't see how Will was better than Josh... or Twitch for that matter. Hell, I was cheering for Hok- but I know why it didn't happen.
My favorite in year five was Melissa by a long shot, but I realize that the problem with being a perfect ten for the entire season is that it gets a bit tedious compared with watching someone improve from six to nine towards the end of the season that way Kayla did, or overcome critics' opinions the way Brandon did. That said, I have no idea why Jeanine won, or why she was even in the Final Four over Jeannette.

I have mixed feelings about this new format. Love seeing the all stars, but we don't get enough of them. Not much variety on the guys side, too many contemporary dudes. And with Mia taking Mary Murphy's place there's some truly brutal honesty from the judges that makes it especially difficult to watch.
