View Full Version : What's Your Favorite Game Over Screen?

In talking about it in another thread, it seems I found a deep appreciation for those video games who went out of their way to make a special "Game Over" or continue scene.

You know, how in Street Fighter you got the posed picture of the person who beat you with a special taunt facing your own character, whose face is beaten in to a pulp.

Or the Zelda II ending with the laughing Ganon in silhouette declaring you failed, and he would be returning to Hyrule.

Or yet still, the continue scene for the original Ninja Gaiden that had the chainsaw being lowered slowly down towards Ryu's chest, and if you failed to hit Continue, the whole screen would fade to red...

Any other classic "You Lose" scenarios come to mind? (And feel free to cite your favorite ways to die in Maniac Mansion, Shadowgate, or games of the like for custom Game Overs...)

Actually the original was for the NES...the Xbox NG is more of a revival.

Anyway as for Game Over Screens, RES has a rather distinct one, what with the zombies edgeing towards your body.

Didn't the original Ninja Gaiden for NES have that game over/continue Screen?

Or was that only the arcade version of the original I'm thinking about?

Well for one you don't play as Ryu in the NES version, but if i remember correctly there was never any real game over screen until you got to the last level or so....i just remember the screen flashing and some music playing....who knows....the arcade version may have had some changes made like an added game over screen.

The Arcade and first NES Ninja Gaidens were very different games; the Arcade version was a beat-em-up in the Double Dragon tradition while NES version was more of a traditional platformer and both were released in the same year and thus were probably produced more or less simultaneously.

So, there's no real point in speculating on which came first or what "changes" were made from one to another, they're two completely different games that share a name.

Anyway, the point is, the Arcade version did indeed have the continue screen he mentioned, with a buzzsaw blade lowering towards Ryu's chest as the timer counts down.

Also, right up there with the Friday the 13th Game Over is the one for an obscure game called Bokosuka Wars.

The game mocks you with a sarcastic, "Wow! You Lose!" as victorious enemies happily dance by underneath.

In Spider-man vs the Kingpin game (for Genesis)game over/continue screen, Spiey would walk around in his jail cell, with a cop watching him. Once you selected yes, he'd break out, if no, he'd just sit there dejectedly.

Also, if you died in the final combat with the Kingpin, you'd be thrown in the vat of acid...

I forgot one of my favorites...

In the Alien3 game for SNES, when you got a game over, the screen would just show the Alien, and say "Game Over"... but the awesome part was they got perfect sound of Bill Paxton from the movie Aliens shouting his classic, "That's it, Game Over, man!!!"

And oddly, that seemed to be the best thing about the game. Otherwise, it kind of was an amalgam of the second and third movies, was WAY too hard, had bad play control, and if you didn't go from point A to point B to point C and kill stuff on the run, more and more prisoners would have baby xenomorphs pop out of 'em. Rough game.

Think it was Super Star Wars, or maybe even Super Empire Strikes Back on the Super NES. The game over screen was Yoda saying "That is why you fail!".

Resident Evil 2, where you actually got to watch the zombies feast on your body.

X-wing and a few other early-mid 1990's space dogfighting game: a view of your character's space funeral.

I never knew that, thanks for the heads up.

Goldeneye on N64. It's still hilarious to watch, from multiple angles, a poorly-animated James Bond collapse to ground amidst a hail or gunfire, explosions, or combination of both.

Mortal Kombat 4 was not the best chapter in the MK series, but I believe it had a continue/game over screen where your character is falling into a pit, and if you don't press start they fall into the spikes at the bottom.

Oddly enough Teen Titans for PS2. It was quite the twist ending.

What game's that?

Let's see... Symphony of the Night's, "Let us go this evening for pleasure. The night is still young."

And Hong Kong 97 (http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/hongkong97/hongkong97.htm)'s "Chin's Dead" screen.

Metal Gear Solid 2 where you think it's game over put in actuality it's part of the storyline. I consider that game a modern classic so I'm not going to spoil it beyond that.

Looks like Final Fight. If it's not, then Final Fight for the SNES had one very similar.

As for me, I like the SMT: Nocturne (http://youtube.com/watch?v=6cZX00grie0) screen for Game Over.

I've always wonder what game that was from, thanks Donald.

Speaking of favorite game over screens, the one from the SNES version of Aline 3 is an old fav of mine. It had the "Game Over" line from the movie Alines, and had a drolling Alien on it to.

Indeed it's Final Fight. The fuse on the dynamite gets shorter and shorter as the time to continue counts down.

And a knife falls out of the sky and cuts off the fuse if you choose to continue.
