View Full Version : Most powerful good guy in Marvel, DC?

Who is the most powerful character who is unequivocally a good guy (or girl) in the Marvel and DC universes?
"Good guy" means that this character regularly fights against villains, and fights against other good guys only in the case of misunderstanding, mind control, or other extenuating circumstances. "Helps out against extraordinary existential threats" isn't sufficient. However, the character does not need to make a full-time business of fighting evil.
Also, we're considering normal power level over a considerable span of time, not a hero with a huge temporary powerup.
Would Odin be the MU's most powerful good guy?

The Spectre or Phantom Stranger would probably be DC's most powerful good guys.
Odin could probably be considered for Marvel, though he doesn't get much "air time", so to speak. After him, the Silver Surfer is the only one I can really think of as exceedingly powerful, and consistantly heroic.

The Hulk fits this role. If you don't mind the time that he is the Hulk a temporary powerup because he is not the Hulk all the time, but otherwise he fits this role.

How the Hulk is 'the most powerful' when they have the SS is beyond me.

The Spectre is probably at the top of DC's list but his power level waivers. Below him is the Phantom Stranger, whose power level doesn't waiver as much but isn't as well defined either. I suppose the "Superman sat in the sun for too long and is a god now" version f Supes from the distant future might be up there too.
My knowledge of Marvel goes all the way up to Howard the Duck. So I can't help you there.

I said this because the Hulk regularly fights villians and usually fights the good guys because of misunderstandings, etc.; and he is one of the most powerful superheroes in the Marvel Universe.

But Surfer is far more powerful. Thor is as well.

Odin wouldnt count since he only foes in for the very serious threats
and frankly a guy who has no sisues...in vaping bunches of galaxies..blidnign and hiritnmg other comsics..with his energies..and shaking the mutliverse
thats not a good guy
he kills tirllions and tierllions every time he does that
and he puts..other good forces (like utatau and some others_) in pain
plus odin had no problem..nearly blowingf a hole threw the ss (and totally wrecking him and putting him out of the fight pretty much instantly wth no real care to actually bother to notice norrins actually anoble good person)
and nearly murdeirng thanos..despite the fact that they where there to help save his son
the guy maybe a force of good
but i think he is way to ruthless/vicious..and rarely invovled to..fit this list

For Marvel - ye olden times Dr. Strange, Silver Surfer, Sentry and Phoenix Rachel.
If Meggan is in the right environment, then she also could go on the list.

For Marvel? Probably Strange, (the late) Quasar, and Silver Surfer.
For DC? I'm going to have to buck the trend because I don't really consider Phantom Stranger and Spectre as 'heroes' per se, more like DC's versions of cosmic abstracts...so I'll go with the Kent Nelson version of Doctor Fate, certain iterations of Superman, and Kyle Rayner.

The Spectre had his own title where he fought bad guys long before any of the Marvel guys you mentioned.

Yeah, I didn't think Odin really counted, but the OP mentioned him, and I don't know what he's been up to, aside from he's technically a good guy.
Otherwise, like I said, Silver Surfer seems to be the very top tier in Marvel, for what we're talking about here. Strange is up there, but usually requires power-ups to handle the biggest threats, Adam Warlock deals with high-end stuff, but himself isn't all that powerful, especially without the soul Gem, and Sentry just doesn't have Surfer's track record yet.
I don't know much with the Phantom Stranger, honestly, I just know he's been part of hero teams before, but as was said, Spectre had his own title for a while, its mainly recently that he's been relagated to cosmic plot device.

Marvel's aesthetic counterpart to Spectre was Joe Simon and Jack Kirby's Aarkus, the Vision. However, he was just an extradimensional police officer. He had the Spectre's creepy visage and mysterious powers, but the Spectre was downright empowered by God Himself. It's hard to beat an origin like that. Marvel has only had metaphors for God show up. Galactus, who sort of represented God in the Fantastic Four, empowered the Silver Surfer, so I'd call Silver Surfer the closest counterpart to the Spectre at Marvel.

I am aware of that. However he no longer serves in that capacity (and even then I wouldn't exactly classify him as a 'hero').

Does Silver Surfer really constitute hero now-a-days? I mean, he's Galactus' herald again, and he's fighting Nova (a hero) at the moment.
I wouldn't say Thor is more powerful than the Hulk either. A wider array of powers, but the only one that's shown to be able to put the Hulk down is a surprise lightning attack. The Hulk beat his ass otherwise (Hulk Annual 2001)
I'd say the Sentry qualifies for now, until they write the event when he goes evil (clearly coming with S.H.I.E.L.D. talking about how the have no way to kill him and Iron Man sees no physical flaws).
Strange was up there until the Hulk broke his hands in WWH, haha. (ya I know, PIS, guys).
I'd say Sentry is the only person you could absolutely say is the top guy who is always a hero at the moment.
As for DC, the Spectre is the spirit of vengeance so he's not totally a good guy. See Blue Beetle for evidence.
So after that it's got to fall to Phantom Stranger I think. Unless the golden Superman from DC One Million counts, haha.

I think the Void kind of disqualifies Sentry.

There are barely any good guys at Marvel these days. Most have blemishes on them, except for Steve Rogers and he's dead.
Therefore, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the Eternals are the most powerful good guys in Marvel.

Well there is a big difference between a blemish in someone like Iron Man (not that I'm saying he qualifies) who was an alcoholic, and the Silver Surfer who helps Galactus kill billions of people.
The Eternals are bad ass though. Especially Sersi

That wasn't a conscience choice though, it was a mental issue, so he wasn't deliberately causing harm.

You forgot the past few years. Iron Man's main blemish now is that he is a proponent of anti-liberty government-dictated oppression.

And the Iron Hate springs forth again!!!! Anyway I'd say Sentry for Marvel and Hal Jordan for DC.
