A pretty good haul at the shop yesterday (Gail's WW, Marcos Martin's Spidey, and Batman R.I.P. could at least be an interesting experiment if nothing else).
My Mom's almost done with the entire run of Preacher I've been loaning her for months now (she just finished #54).
A Batman t-shirt of mine yesterday at work finally gave me something new to talk about with a co-worker of mine (it's at least a start); she mostly just seems to know the films, though (which might explain her mild suprise at my general prefferal of Timm & Co.'s 90's show).
During the night, my cat apparently killed a roach I couldn't get to before I went to bed. Thank you God (or whoever), for sending me a furry, cuddly companion who will also do my dirty work for me.

Because of job lay-off's over the past few years it's very hard for me to accumulate even a week's vacation. So Dragon Con this year will be my first official 'real going away' vacation lasting longer than a weekend excursion in maybe something like 5 years.

My mother does not have liver cancer!!
It's been a month-long ordeal here, with first the doctors worried about a suspicious mass, then a bunch of blood tests. One of which said: 85 percent cancer of liver cancer.
My mom is only 64. She has none of the risk factors. But, I tell you, 85 percent chance of liver cancer is very bad news.
My sister in Boston called around and pulled every string she could and got an appointment with a liver specialist at a very good hospital there. They ran some other tests and we got the results today.
not cancer! Some sort of fatty tissue with blood in it. Might have to come out, might not. But the most she faces is surgery.

I got a second job. Which is not only giving more hours than B&N, it's also paying me more and giving me a real job title. Assistant manager, at your cervix. I'd be manager, if I could work nights. Which I can't, till school's out.
It's also another bookstore, so I'm still in my favorite retail element. And ending up with a huge stack of reading material. It's across the street from B&N and, in fact, located in our old building. There's the added benefit of not having my B&N manager considering this a conflict of interest.
The bad news is that it's a temporary position, possibly as short as 3 months. The boss here is seriously hoping we'll make it through Christmas, which would be utterly incredible. But 3 months would make it until hours start coming back at B&N, 6 would bring me just shy of the start of season.
It's also providing a serious drain on me physically. I'm absolutely exhausted with all the unpacking and merchandising. And now I'm doubling my efforts in household chores just to break even.
The worst part is the crimp in cartooning. I've got assignments coming up and I'm trying to put in extra hours between the 2 jobs which is giving me no spare time.
Rock, meet hard place.

Cheeseburger in paradise
By: jimmy buffett
1978
Tried to amend my carnivorous habits
Made it nearly seventy days
Losin' weight without speed, eatin' sunflower seeds
Drinkin' lots of carrot juice and soakin' up rays
But at night i'd had these wonderful dreams
Some kind of sensuous treat
Not zuchinni, fettucini or bulghar wheat
But a big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat
Chorus:
Cheeseburger in paradise (paradise)
Heaven on earth with an onion slice (paradise)
Not too particular not too precise (paradise)
I'm just a cheeseburger in paradise
Heard about the old time sailor men
They eat the same thing again and again
Warm beer and bread they said could raise the dead
Well it reminds me of the menu at a holiday inn
Times have changed for sailors these days
When i'm in port i get what i need
Not just havanas or bananas or daiquiris
But that american creation on which i feed
Chorus:
Cheeseburger in paradise (paradise)
Medium rare with mustard 'be nice (paradise)
Heaven on earth with an onion slice (paradise)
I'm just a cheeseburger in paradise
Coda:
I like mine with lettuce and tomato
Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes
Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer
Well good god almighty which way do i steer

Cheeseburger's are nice.
Time for Silly Songs! He said to her
"I'd like a cheeseburger."
"And I might like a milkshake as well."
She said to him "I can't get you either"
He said "Isn't this burger bell?"
She said "Yes it is but we're closed now."
"But we open tomorrow at ten."
He said "I am extremely hungry!"
"But I guess I can wait until then!"
Cuz you're his cheeseburger
His yummy cheeseburger
He'll wait for you. Ya!
He'll wait for you.
Oh, you are his cheeseburger
His tasty cheeseburger
He'll wait for you
Oh, he will wait for you.
He stayed at the drive-thru till sunrise
He may have dozed off once or twice
When he spotted a billboard for Denny's
Bacon and eggs for half price!
How could he resist such an offer?
He really needed something to munch
Cheeseburger, please do not get angry
He'll eat and be back here for lunch!
Cuz you're his cheeseburger
His precious cheeseburger
Be back for you.
He'll be back for you.
Won't be so long, cheeseburger
Oh, lovely cheeseburger
Be back for you
Oh, he'll be back for you.
Cuz he loves you cheeseburger with all his heart
And there's nothin' gonna tear you two apart
And if the world suddenly ran out of cheese,
He would get down on his hands and knees
To see if someone accidently dropped some cheese in the dirt
And he would wash it off for you
Wipe it off for you
Clean that dirty cheese off just for you!
You are his cheese ... burrrr ... grrrrr!

Not quite up there with the marriage thing, but a step in the right direction.
Federal court rules against military gays policy
SEATTLE (AP) - The military cannot automatically discharge people because they're gay, a federal appeals court ruled Wednesday in the case of a decorated flight nurse who sued the Air Force over her dismissal.
The three judges from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals did not strike down the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. But they reinstated Maj. Margaret Witt's lawsuit, saying the Air Force must prove that her dismissal furthered the military's goals of troop readiness and unit cohesion.
The "don't ask, don't tell, don't pursue, don't harass" policy prohibits the military from asking about the sexual orientation of service members but requires discharge of those who acknowledge being gay or engaging in homosexual activity.
Wednesday's ruling led opponents of the policy to declare its days numbered. It is also the first appeals court ruling in the country that evaluated the policy through the lens of a 2003 Supreme Court decision that struck down a Texas ban on sodomy as an unconstitutional intrusion on privacy.

The bad news is, Friday night we were in a fender-bender: at a stop light, the guy in front of us from out of town decided to back up to ask the taxi driver in the next lane for directions, didn't hear our horn, and backed into us.
The good news is multiple:
1. no one hurt
2. minimal damage to our car, though the hood is bent and likely will have to be replaced (so we have the time and trouble of dealing with that, sigh)---the bumper on his van sailed right over our front bumper.
3. the guy was totally honest w/us and w/the police---which was truly, IMO, a bit of good karma coming home to us. Even though we were at a stop light, given that we were in the car behind, if he'd tried to lie, chances are the police would've believed that *we* rear-ended *him*. We were very appreciative of his honesty in it, and very relieved.
So, a mixed bag, but plenty of good stuff to be grateful for, and the rest is minor annoyances (we'd just gotten the car worked on, it was running great, and now we have to set up repairs somewhere, have the adjustor out, etc.). Anyway, it could've been a lot worse, and the guy's honesty was a real breath of fresh air.

Certainly looks like it. I can't find myself getting excited for Hulk though. I think Norton's the only one in the cast I'm eager to see, and even then I'm not sure if he can pull it off like Downey did. It's gonna be hard to top or even match Iron Man(though I won't be surprised if TDK pulls it off).
As for good news on my part...hmmm...oh, I'm probably gonna meet up with an old friend of mine later on. Used to be great buddies, but I just regrettably haven't kept in touch, so that should be fun.

Please post good stuff here. Photos, stories, happy thoughts, whatever.
It's been a bit combative and gloomy lately!

We have been able to increase the amount of kids we provide food for. We are now feeding 18,000 kids a day. For many of these kids, it is the only meal they eat in a day.

I met David Sedaris at a book signing on Wednesday and he let me eat his muffin.
He then signed my book "To Hubert, Welcome to my mini-muffin. David Sedaris"
