View Full Version : Confused anbout controversy

I've noticed that "controversial" threads (not just in yabs but all over) tend to die off for two reasons. They get long and people move on or a few people posit plausible and reasonable solutions to the problem discussed and then the discussion ends.

I can understand the first reason, but the second is confusing to me? Shouldn't the possibility of having found a possible solution excite people even more? Shouldn't the discussion become about how to proceed in implementing the solutions? "We have an idea, let's execute it."

The only thing I can think of, I may be wrong, is that many people prefer just discuss things rather than doing something about it? Or it could be that not knowing what to do about it creates the illusion of impasse? Dunno.

Any thoughts?

Good question, and I have no idea about the answer.

People don't like solutions. They like problems. They want to continue arguing about the problem and when someone comes up with a solution they can't really argue anymore, so they leave (and generally find somewhere else where the argument rages).

What do you mean by controversial threads? Stuff like when something bad happens in a comic?

Scratch most YABsters and you'll find a cranky bastard about at least one issue. Often several.

Fold in personality conflicts, basic intransigence, a certain amount of cliquishness (can't be helped) and ... um ... aggressive posturing as a debate stance ... and you see the result. I'm as guilty as anyone of any combo of these ills.

On the upside, there are a stack of wicked funny people here (Kyuubi, Sabrinaset), several aspiring creators at various stages of Launch, several lurking pros who surface at odd moments and then dive again, and the stellar artistic abilities of not a few people. Sometimes people, like Sarah beach, for instance, or Zeu, display more than one talent. That's the reason I come back (though it may seem like it's the arguing, it's not).

Also, the wit and wisdom of one Ms. Gail Simone cannot be oversold.

Roll with it, baby. It's Chinatown.

Anything really.

Not exactly certain what you mean by this but if you're thinking that it bothers me that people argue, it doesn't. I just find it bizarre that sometimes discussions end just where they seem to be getting useful.

In that case...

Internet Outrage of the Week.

Every week, comic fans will find SOMETHING to whine and get all up in arms about. Sometimes it is something worth while, sometimes it is because there is nothing else to complain about. Everyone moans about how things are, and then they all walk away because they've had their moan.

People like to moan. It's like, why does bad press always get more publicity than good press? Because people like to open their newspapers at the breakfast table, tut and sigh about the world and then get on with their day.

Except that there are so many reasons for entering into a discussion, often not having anything to do with the discussion itself.

As I say. It's Chinatown.

(if you don't get the ref, it's time to go and rent an AWESOME movie)

I totally disagree. And furthermore, I'm leaving this thread.

I was thinking of a good thread to derail and I think I found it right here!
