NEW & IMPROVED thread! Now with working link:

http://blogs.abc.net.au/theshallowend/2008/05/point-break-seq.html]

And the following brief initial synopsis:
When Billy Dalton, military special ops and star surfer, is disqualified from the pro-surfing tour, he takes off for the coast of Bali looking for the perfect wave. While there he's recruited by a private security force who are trying to find a gang known as 'The Bush Administration' - surfing outlaws and modern day pirates who work like 'The Ex-Presidents', a bank robbing crew from Malibu 20 years ago.

Couple questions:

1. Why?

2. Why Jan de Bont?

3. Keanu supposedly has a "no sequel rule" (Bill & Ted and Matrix notwithstanding); It kept him out of Speed 2, and if he wouldn't do that...

4. Isn't Patrick Swayze, like, dying or something?

5. How can you do a sequel without the best character, Gary Busey's Angelo Pappas?

I think if I think about this too much, my head will explode.

Is anyone else as dumbfounded about this as I am?

Gary Busey has enough free time on his hands. Chances are he'll show up for this (as a different yet eerily similar character of course).

1. Why?

Money. Over the last couple years cheaply made sequels of long dead franchises have proved profitable. Direct-to-DVD and theatrical. Blame it on the power of brand recognition.

2. Why Jan de Bont?

Not like he was doing anything else.

3. Keanu supposedly has a "no sequel rule" (Bill & Ted and Matrix notwithstanding); It kept him out of Speed 2, and if he wouldn't do that...

If it makes you feel better, I'm sure they have no intention of bringing back Keanu.

4. Isn't Patrick Swayze, like, dying or something?

Or Swayze.

5. How can you do a sequel without the best character, Gary Busey's Angelo Pappas?

Or Busey.

Is anyone else as dumbfounded about this as I am?

No.

it will be called
Point Break 2:
What's The Point
It will star the kid Chris Klein who looks enough like Keanu to get by, but somehow lacks the IT factor of the hawaiian star with no discernable acting ability.
The Story, Surfing bank theives dress as ex british prime ministers...in America...
FBI hot shot has to infiltrate and have them accept him as their own.
He does it with 200% pure adrenaline.

Jan De Bont directs because well he said he's do it if they let his children live.
Direct to Cable...yeah it's written all over it.

Thanks for the totally humorless responses!

If it's not too much trouble, I have another obviously extremely earnest and not sarcastic in any way question that hopefully you can dispassionately answer:

6. Is this the first step in creating a Point Break Trilogy in which "Point Break: Indo" will be followed up with "Point Break: Gin & Juice"?

They should have pothead surfers infiltrate the FBI!

Sarcasm doesn't come across easily on the net. Especially since the amount of poeple who genuinely would be outraged by this news isn't negligible. You want bullshit answers?

1. Why?
Because the story of Johnny Utah deserves to be told. Have you read Joseph Campbell's "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" Utah is one of a long line of mythic heroes and anyone who has seen Point Break will tell you it is simply the first step in the hero's epic journey. Get some culture.

2. Why Jan de Bont?

Because he's a modern day Homer. After spearheading the powerful Speed 2 and transcendental Tmb Raider: Cradle of Life he has proven he has what it takes to be the driving force behind the continuation of a saga such as this.

3. Keanu supposedly has a "no sequel rule" (Bill & Ted and Matrix notwithstanding); It kept him out of Speed 2, and if he wouldn't do that...

If he makes exceptions for pieces of shit like the Matrix, I can't imagine he wouldn't do the same for Point Break. He knows his career will be dead if he doesn't tackle the rle of Utah again. Pun intended.

4. Isn't Patrick Swayze, like, dying or something?

Well his character died in the end of the first one anyway. But I would like a cameo. Maybe a flashback to Utah and Bodhi's bro-love-making scene. All but implied in the first, I think it's time we see it in all it's glory.

5. How can you do a sequel without the best character, Gary Busey's Angelo Pappas?

Two words for you. Jake Busey. Pappas' long lost son.

Now that's some good bullshit!

Two words for you. Jake Busey. Pappas' long lost son.

The only Point Break related movie the world needs is a prequel starring Jake Busey as a young Pappas that includes a scene of him taking shrapnel in Khe San with a cut to an infant Johnny Utah crapping in his hands and rubbing it on his face.

Yeah, but you're imaginary.

I thought I was just making you up...

But, still, is the world even ready for 200% pure adrenaline?

I say they max out out at 118% pure adrenaline tops.

It's cool.

Might take it up with the imaginary persons right council.

not listening because I may or not be real.

Oh, I listened. I'm just trying this new thing where I try to tune out the voices in my head of which I thought you were one... but, you know, in internet message board form.

This news has gotten me a bit disoriented. I think I'm having an adverse reaction to all the pure adrenaline.

The Bush Administration stuff gave me a headache.

On the plus side I read two weeks ago there's a musical version (http://arts.guardian.co.uk/filmandmusic/story/0,,2277151,00.html)of Point Break playing in the States, which brings to the surface all that bronzed gay subtext from the original.

Sounds like much more fun

They should just remake that 'I'm w/Busey' reality show into a movie with overly-obnoxious special effects and gratuitous violence and nudity and call it 'Point Break 2'....talk about oscar buzz....I think it could possibly be the best movie ever thought of actually.

The Bush Administration stuff gave me a headache.

A little too much pure adrenaline, perhaps?

Sounds funny but maybe a little too self-aware for my tastes.

There's nothing quite like something awful that doesn't know it's awful...

kind of like Point Break.

I am an FBI agent!

Sooooooo ...............

Is Livewire/Tank Girl going to be making a possible cameo in this as well?
