Anyone remembers seeing this 80's animated classic when it came out in theaters in 1986? I sure as hell did when i was 4 back in 1986 living in St. Louis, my mom took me twice to see it in a theater and loved it. I had some merchandise like a book from Mcdonalds, one of those Mcdonald stockings, Pajamas and even a stuffed Fievel.

I also saw the suprisingly good and enjoyable sequel in 1991 at the age of 9.

I am the same age, and I loved it when I was four, and the sequel as well. Don Bluth is one of animation's true greats. It was an incredibly well done film. The sequel was the last animated film my father saw in the theatre until Horton Hears a Who, which we went to together with my niece. I still think they hold up, well done family films that don't dumb it down, but don't go too far over kids heads either.

I remember crying when he couldn't find his parents, and not much else about it, really. I did like it, I think it's the first movie I can remember seeing in theaters.

I think The Land Before Time came out not long after, and that was the flick that really stuck with me in my early childhood.

One wonders what would happen if he watched Grave of the Fireflies...

Anyway, An American Tail is a bloody wonderful film. I still get all choked up when I hear "Somewhere Out There."

That might be true, but in terms of animated children movies this and the original Land Before Time were pretty damn depressing. I saw both as a kid (I was probably 4 or 5 at the time) and all I remember is how sad they were.

That said, the American Tails sequel was a fun movie.

Hmm. True. Taking your age at the time into consideration, It's probably fair to acknowledge that along with Don Bluth's dark, almost hypnotic color palette.

I thought Toy Story 2 was depressing, and I was all grown up when I saw it...

You're talking about 'When She Loved Me', aren't you.

I was born the in 1986 so I didn't get to see it in the theatre. But I love that movie.

I love anything made by Don Bluth. He is one of my idols.

The sequel wasn't made by him though - still good, but not the same.

The Land Before Time sequels weren't done by him either, and those are not good. They turned them into 2 year old musicals.

Saw it in theaters as a youngen. I think it was the first film to make me cry. I was doing alright but when Somewhere Out There came on - BAM - Niagra Falls.

Don Bluth is king.

Bambi didn't have as much of an effect for some reason....Not to say I didn't like American Tale....its a masterpiece...and I liked the sequel a lot. But I just remember being disturbed by it a little.....Akira made my guts all churney the first time I saw it also.....I miss animation with cerbral and emotional gravity.
