I've been trying to read old storylines, mostly by grant morrison, as a refresher leading up to final crisis. What do everyone think are essential stories with ideas that will be played upon in final crisis?

so far i have, and this is just a very early list off the top of my head

JLA: Rock of Ages
Seven Soldiers
Green Lantern Alpha Lantern stories

what else?

JLA: Rock of Ages
Seven Soldiers

I'm really curious to see if the Mister Miracle story from SSOV directly ties into Final Crisis or just retroactively hints at the theme of the New Gods inhabiting human bodies but in a different context. As hard as I tried to enjoy those four M.M. issues, most of the storyline (outside of the imprisoning of Aurakles) always felt quite tangental to the main SSOV story. It'd be great if Morrison could effortlessly work that timeline into Final Crisis in a way that makes a bit more sense. (if anyone can do it, he can!)

Glad to see Rock Of Ages mentioned so frequently in the buildup to FC; still one of the best modern-age JLA stories of all time if you ask me!!

Batman R.I.P? doesn't FC lead to R.I.P or is it the other way round?

R.I.P. leads into FC. Morrison also mentioned at NYCC that there'll be a two-issue story after R.I.P. that ties into FC, but didn't mention if it was a prelude or took place during FC.

Yea, batman rip does. But i didnt mention any current storylines, because well, obviously they are tying into Final Crisis.

What i'm interested in is stories from JLA v3 and on that may have some ties to it.

Grant Morrison has mentioned "Rock of Ages" and "World War III" as the two stories from his JLA run which can be seen to contribute to this. Unsprising- they're both Fourth World-heavy.

The obvious ones

COIE
Identity Crisis
Infinite Crisis
52

And I'm sure the earlier stuff from Morrison's run will come into play since everything is tied into everything he does.

Does Rock of Ages stand by itself? I ain't read it yet, but am thinking of picking up the trade. Long as I don't have to pick up a million other trades with it.

It stands by itself, but you'll almost certainly need to re-read it about ten times to actually fully understand it. It's an awesome story though, so the first few times will still be fun, even if you have little-no idea what's going on. ;)

Agreed! Rock Of Ages is awesomely epic in scope and concept and I pick up more nuances scattered throughout every time I read it every couple of years (didn't even notice the foreshadowing mention of Mageddon until reading it again last night for the first time in awhile).

It totally functions on its own as a standalone trade for anyone interested in checking it out; I first read it in 1999 on a friend's recommendation and it was the book that got me back into DC after a years-long hiatus on comics in general.

I've been catching up on the JLA series and Rock of Ages is a good read. To be honest, I really did not care much for the first two trades of the series, but that one is really good. There are definitely some New Gods references in that storyline that could definitely be tied into whatever is coming in Final Crisis. I don't think anyone would have a problem jumping in and reading just the Rock of Ages trade, it stands alone well without introduction.

There is an odd title reference in the next JLA trade 'Strength in Numbers' with the concluding issue of the Dr, Julian September storyline which is called "Seven Soldiers of Probability". I don't think it is a direct tie to what is coming up other than the fact that Morrison used the phrase 'seven soldiers'. It is curious.

I've not read the rest of Morrison's run on JLA, so I don't know if he ever really explains out some of the things that came out of the end of the Rock of Ages storyline.

That's actually a fill-in story by Mark Waid, *NOT* a Morrison story, so I'd say there's no tie-in at all.

Plus it's a play on the old DC team, "Seven Soldiers of Victory". Seven Soldiers was a sort of "sequel" to their adventures.

if he is including 7 soldiers then I guess you should include that 3 issue jla classified he wrote with the ultramarines and grod since that was sort of a seven soldiers prelude. it was terrific btw
