I dont remember the exact date, but on Mother's Day, 1978 i went to my first comics show. I had heard about it on the news some time during the week and somehow persuaded my Mom to let me drive by myself into the Big City. I remember from going to Grandma's house that Michigan Ave was close by, so i thought that the Century Bowl (a bowling alley) where the show was held should be close by.
Wrong.
Starting up in the south of Saint Louis, i drove down Michigan as it stopped. I drove around and it picked back up again. Driving down some more, again it stopped. More searching and finding it again, i got to the show finally.
Fifteen minutes before it closed.
I did manage to get through to a couple of dealers before they closed the place up and snagged a copy of Doom Patrol and a couple of other books for fifty cents each.
But i saw enough to make it back again next month. Fanzines, monster mags, nudie books, comic books from the 1950s and 1940s!
Wow. And a lifetime and a whole buncha comics later, i'd do it all again in a heartbeat. Except take more money and a map.
