Normally, I'd agree, but any flick that has been completed and shelved for over a year usually doesn't fair well, although this one could be the exception to the ordinary.

The Strangers is an Americanised version of a French/Romanian film called "ils", sometimes translated as "Them". It could also be based off another European film called Funny Games.
The film is supposedly based on a true story but it's only as "true" a story as Texas Chainsaw Massacre is considered true. (basically, it's not) The movie is VERY loosely based on the story of an Austrian couple who were killed in their home while in the Czech Republic.

Funny Games already got the American remake treatment; same director as the original, but less thrilling, I felt.
And it isn't "ils," which I first watch as "Them." That was a pleasent surprise.

Apparently, It's not based on "Them". http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0482606/faq#.2.1.1 According to the filmmakers it isn't a remake and any similarity is purely inspirational. I've never seen either "Them" or "Funny Games", so I don't know.
I thought the trailer was creepy as hell really, looking forward to watching, but I'm open to the fact it could be a disaster.

This movie looks pretty scary to me. I'm always creeped out by quiet psychos in masks.

As big of a horror fan as I am, especially when it comes to slasher flicks, this movie doesn't look like the type that would cause me to rush out to the theaters to see.
Im considering adding it on my DVD list if the word is good enough.

I think its loosely based on the Manson murders and a murder spree in a cabin North. Check www.cabin28.com for details on that one.

This doesn't strike me as a slasher flick, really, more of a stalker flick.

....... finaly saw " They " yikes! - based on a true story - doubt Strangers will be as messed up as this - hollywood should just stick to remaking crappy remakes of japanese and 70s/80s stuff - give the people what they want - bwah!

Funny Games is already being remade separately.

........ the "funny games" remake was in theaters a couple of months ago - rent the original - unless you really need to see naomi watts in her under pants

It was pretty scary but, predictably, there was nothing to the ending. I liked in the trailer when asked "why are you doing this?" they replied, "because you were home."
But even so, they just get stabbed to death and they leave. It was a little anti-climatic, and many horror movie cliches are in there. I can ignore them usually, but after 20 years you would think they would stop using them.
For example:
The cell phone is not charged.
The phone is disconnected.
A weird person knocks at the house in 4 in the morning, but the boyfriend still decides to leave the girlfriend at home to get smokes.
He leaves his cell phone in the car.
When she tells him people in masks were at the house and inside it, he just tries to calm her down and searches the house to prove her wrong, and instead of saying "LISTERN #@%$#%^ER! I SAW SOME KIND OF PSYCHOS HERE!" and drag him out to the car, she goes along with it and says, meekly, "but I saw them."
The atmosphere was scary, the masks were creepy, but story wise it wasn't good. I really regret watching it. Even as a rental I would feel that way.
It also reminded me of Wolf Creek.

TROUBLEZ review made me nostalgic for cheesy old slasher flicks. i miss the old pattern of hot college-aged women being bumped off by masked/costumed killer in over-the-top fashion. i also miss the soundtracks and gratuitous nudity.

I slipped into this movie after watching another one the other day.
I don't much care for snuff films, no matter if they're packaged under "horror" or "psychological terror." Serves me right, I could have slipped in to see Made of Honor instead.

The cell phone is the enemy of the modern horror movie. Writers are forced to contrive reasons why the cops aren't called in to save the day.
