I'm having a Hendricks and soda with lemon. We have cheap mother's day lobsters and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang to watch later.

Damn fine film. The cast is good enough, but I've got a soft spot for Shane Black. I'll at check out, at least once, anything he's involved in.

I could barely make out the individual words, let alone try to discern a meaning. I'm really getting sick of entire episodes where everybody speaks in stage whispers all the time.

Yeah, I've found the only way to hear anything this season is to turn the bass right down. There's always this low-level rumbling going on that drowns out anything that isn't yelling.

I have a 30g Zune, I don't think my 350+ CDs would all fit...or would they?

Should come close. Depends on the bitrate they're encoded at. Too high, they take up too much space. Too low, they sound like arse. Try VBR at ~192kbps.

I thought about that, but I can't. I've been witness to too many Downey Jr roles. Back to School. Less Than Zero. Weird Science. The Pickup Artist. Johnny Be Good. Home for the Holidays....and I can go on and on and on and on and on.

Does Apple put the color of your iPod in the code so that iTunes can tell what color it is?

Not sure if it shows up in iTunes (haven't used that in ages), but mine shows up as black when I plug it into AmaroK, so that info is in there somewhere.

I'm impressed that you managed to finish both.

Then again, I've watched and read Battlefield: Earth.

I finished the book out of sheer bloody-mindedness because of all the rave reviews that it had supposedly gotten. The character development and plot were amazing. Worse than your average fanfiction (but the grammar was a lot better).

And I watched it with friends. So we could chat and basically just tune it out. I'd love to get a MST3K version of it. But bootleg. I'm not giving Scientology any money. (It looks like I do have some exceptions to my morality when it comes to piracy.)

It's just boring. Bland and uninteresting characters, poor and non-sensical plot, mixed in with jingoism and diatribes against psychology. But it's really only offensive in its stupidity.

The Irish are some of the most brilliant drunk people I've ever conversed with. I'd love to go back to Ireland.

I felt extraordinarily bad for urinating on books (principles and such), but I couldn't stand for what Dan Brown was trying to sell. I wished it were his forehead the whole time (I keep telling myself).

I want ed to set it on fire and launch it off my balcony if that helps as well.

They were described somewhere in the book as experts but dear lord they were fucking stupid.

That was what annoyed me about Angels and Demons so much and early on. He introduces the main character and gives some background about how he's such an awesome guy because he still stays in shape and his students think he's cool. Don't tell me; show me! That, and that he's a Gary Stu.

Oh, I thought you were talking about the readers.

Yeah, never trust an author's narrative descriptions of his characters. If he sucks, they're wrong and he's too dumb to know it. If he's any good, they're wrong and he's pulling a fast one on you.

I kinda figured he understood what he was righting but since his wife did his research and his plot was driven by pigeons landing on his windowsill....

Really fucking stupid people.

Again, I'm not sure if you're describing the characters or the audience.

I tried using CSI as white noise once. I had to turn it off because the constant "Holy shit, that's wrong" had my blood pressure up as high as my grandfather's. I refuse to pay any attention to the work of writers who are dumber than I am.

Characters.

They kept using Nick and Warrick as the "what?" guys who seemed to need things explained to them constantly when they were more than competent when the show started. Grissom used to be a great guy until they had Sarah cut his balls off.

There was just some things that I knew about grade school science and stuff that had me throwing things at the TV for them being so stupid.

The constant need for writers or producers to make the audience Mary Sue'd in to the show instead of just having the people be smart and admired for their intelligence.

Term papers are graded. All I have left to do is enter the scores into the gradebook at school Monday and I'm done with everything but finals. 40 multiple choice questions and two essays on each test. That will go quickly, as the multiple choice section is machine scoreable.

Got a second job today. Found an ad in the paper Monday for a book wholesaler that's opening up -- get this -- right across the street from where B&N is right now. I called the guy Thursday and did a pretty decent selling of myself.

I got outta work at 1 and ran directly there. I almost shite when I realized he's opening up not only across the street but in our old building!

He hired me on the spot. He wants me in as manager but I can't work nights right now. Told him mebbe when school's over and I don't have to worry so much about getting the Things in bed so early. He told me not to worry about it, that we'll talk about it Tuesday. If it wasn't for this bullshit with public assistance, I coulda started fecking Monday. I am so gonna read them the goddam riot act.

Oh, and when I check the mail when we got home, I found a notice from the employment complex at social services. They want me to come in for training.

Training!?! WTF!?! I'm working 2 jobs now and they want me to come in for training? Am I missing something here? The Hag is $22k in arrears and they give her an adjournment so she can fight the child support cuz she 'can't afford it'. [twat from social services]Well, if you bothered to make yourself more employable, then you wouldn't have to be dependent on your ex-wife's income.[/twat from social services]

I was told that 2 years ago.

'I guess you'll just have to learn not to rely on the child support.'

So, enacting all these laws, dragging out divorce proceedings to determine custody, hiring attorneys at astronomical costs, that's all for shites and giggles? Or is it just to make sure that fathers are the only ones continually painted with the 'deadbeat' brushstroke?

The Hag complained that she paid over $2000 in child support last year. I paid 4x that from my paycheck alone; in fact, I paid more in child support than I brought home last year. Add to that another $2500 from our income tax refund the government seized. Without notification, mind you; they're supposed to send you a letter at the close of the fiscal year stating their intentions for overdue taxes, support, student loans, etc. I got a letter 2 weeks after I did my research when I filed. Since I have been paying regular, they technically shouldn't have taken it all, no matter the arrears.

Which brings up another sore spot:

Thing Prime's mother promised my mother (yeah, up until today my Mensa-candidate mother still talked to her on occasion and held her in decent regard) that all the child support I've been over the past 5 years has been saved for his college education. Except I found out -- without asking directly -- that he has no money for university and is gonna go to a community college to get his 101 courses out of the way.

She lied. Imagine that.

Billy got out of prison but he wasn't right
Some like to drink or gamble, billy liked to fight
He tracked back to his home state of maryland
Went to his mom's mobile home where she took him in, alright

Rockaway the days, rockaway the nights
Gimme something to last me, baby, till the morning light
I ain't lookin' for trouble, I ain't looking for a fight
Honey rockaway these days, rockaway these nights

Well at a picnic one sunday billy met mary dove
Mary looked at billy, billy fell in love
Billy swore to mary he'd always love her so
They were married in the valley where the river flows, alright

Rockaway the days, rockaway the nights
Gimme something to last me, baby, till the morning light
I ain't lookin' for trouble, I ain't looking for a fight
Honey rockaway these days, rockaway these nights

At a roadside bar billy argued with a young man
And he settled that argument with a razor in his hand
With blood on his shirt back to mary he did run
She sighed "billy, oh billy, what have you done? "

He ran to his ma's trailer but the lights were dim
He pounded on the door, she wouldn't let him in
Up the road to a neighbor's house he drew near
They said "billy go away, we don't want no trouble round here"
Billy stole a car and headed out on the road
Pocketful of pills and his brain on overload
Seen some lights in his rearview mirror, panicked and gave her the gun
Wrapped himself round a telephone pole way out on 101

Well billy got cut out by the highway patrol
Just lay there with the cars passing on slow
Sheriff told billy's ma that billy died
She buried his body by the riverside, alright

Rockaway the days, rockaway the nights
Gimme something to last me, baby, till the morning light
I ain't lookin' for trouble, I ain't looking for a fight
Honey rockaway these days, rockaway these nights

Well rich man want the power and the seat on the top
Poor man want the money that the rich man got
Honey tonight I'm feeling so tired and unsure
Come on in mary, shut the light, close the door

Rockaway the days, rockaway the nights
Gimme something to last me, baby, till the morning light
I ain't lookin' for trouble, I ain't looking for a fight
Honey rockaway these days, rockaway these nights

Yeah, it occurred to me recently that I don't have any books on him, either. And I haven't been to the art bookstore in a couple weeks...

If there's one thing I've learned over the years of being cheap -- sorry, frugal, never ever go to an art bookstore for art books.

Here's one on Leonardo (http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/Leonardos-Universe-Renaissance-World-Leonardo-Bulent-Atalay-Keith-Wamsley/9781426202858-item.html?ref=Search+Books+Outlet%3a+%2527leonardo +davinci%2527) being released in Chapters in the bargain section. And here's a bunch (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/results.asp?bargain=Y&WRD=leonardo+davinci) at the B&N website. I'll check around at the new store next week, too.

I love Michaelangelo and Leonardo to pieces, even if none of their influence shows in my work.

I can recall the warm youth of a summer day, yeah:
The sweetest lemonade, the darkest game arcade,
And Billy had a yearning in the corner of his mind.
It moved him secretly. It moved him powerfully.
But prescience was lacking and the present was not all
And his aptitudes were carelessly wasted.
And challenging life with the abandon of a fool,
He squandered the hours of his day.
Then darkness and disorder slapped him sharply in the face, yeah.
It hit him like a friend, struck something deep within.
He couldn't break the chain of slow decay that seemed to drag him
Just like a fatal tie toward the other side.
And Billy was a lunatic, just barking at the moon,
And his brain was totally wasted.
He then exchanged his friends for a needle and a spoon
And he threw his future away.
Bolt the door and throw away the key.
Your dim reflection is all that you can see.
So where is the justice when no one is at fault
And a human life is tragically wasted?
How fragile is the flame that burns within us all
To light each passing day?

He buzzed my apartment from the front door last week, and all he kept saying was "I think you dropped this."

I guess he didn't know I couldn't look through my phone to see what he was pointing at.

You seriously should start throwing shit down there, and then call him and say you dropped some stuff and you would like all of it back.

Or blame him for stealing it from your balcony. "Did it fall, or did you steal it?!"

I grew up with that as well. In fact, I remember my parents were heavily into Little League administration. But sometime around the late '60s they were pushed away, repulsed by the fact that most of the newer people involved seemed to think they were involved in Major League Baseball or something. Harsh ass coaches, repeals of the "everyone must play" rules, freakin' DRAFTS! They hated the whole concept. Little League is for kids to have fun, not as a farm system for heavy competition ball.

The Little League clone I played in had an "everyone plays" requirement, but it was so weak that it made it possible for coaches to all but eliminate playing time for their worst players. The wording made it such that the player had to get one inning in the field and one at bat opportunity. In practical terms, this meant that you could save your worst player until the last inning and sub her in near the bottom of the lineup if possible. The player would get one inning in right field, and usually no opportunity to bat; either the team would get three outs first, or if you were the home team and ahead, would not bat that inning.

Youth league basketball was worse. Players had to get one quarter, so coaches would sub in their worst players and the sub them back out as soon as possible. Sometimes the "one quarter" amounted to less than a minute.

No Country is fucking great. I forget, have you seen There Will Be Blood yet?

Both of those movies are brilliant

but i think my favorite of 2007 was still zodiac

Juno was my favorite, but I'd conced that No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood are better movies. Both have a lot more depth to them than Juno.

Stoopid me for not buying into the Lottery dream and instead exercising my intellect.

I cannot believe the times I've had to stand behind people buying $50 worth of lottery tickets. For the next day. After buying $50 worth for today.

I spend about $10 a month on books for either myself, the Things or Momma. The rest I get in stripbacks for free. I have scrimped every fecking dime I've brought home for the past 18 months for rent or utilities. My shoes are 5 years old. The 2 biggest treats I've bought myself recently were the Whip-Cracking Indy figure and a copy of Scream for Jeeves (http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1320616) offa ebay. And I saved bottle returns and the money I had aside for coffee at work ($1 a day) for a month for that book.

Sounds like the Hag back in the day.

Except her pay was going to hotel rooms, padded handcuffs and lingerie. Which I found amazing since I honestly didn't think Frederick's allowed that much fabric for one outfit.

Did I ever mention the bag of vibrators we found in the apartment when had to shovel out the bedroom? Mind, the biggest arguments we had was going for groceries. 'OMG, we need milk again!?!'

Literally shovel. When the bulk of the refuse was carted to the street, I took a rake to the carpet to gather up the debris.

I'll assume that the handle end of a butter knife is thick enough.

with your left hand, make the "ok" sign. Keeping the ok sign put your palm on the bottle cap. Put whatever lever you're using in the ok, and under the cap, and crank it while pushing down and gripping the ok. It should pop off.

That's an old wives tale in my experience. No lobster or crab cooked in our home has ever screamed when we dropped it into the boiling water. They all tasted great though.

They don't scream. Occasionally there's some air trapped in the shells that shoots out when it hits the boiling water emitting a squeal because of the temperature differences. But it's not always. I have heard it. It doesn't sound like a scream, it sounds like what it is.

Bic lighter or a good hard countertop. Sadly, these skills are often only learned by old stoners from the days before twist off anything.

You can open bottles with a lighter, or lighter shaped object if properly trained. It's all about levers.

You, sir, must have known some old stoners!

YAY, the skillz are being passed down through generations!

I like to call it the "Moonlight Graham" rule. Moonlight Graham is the professional baseball player in Shoeless Joe (Field of Dreams) whose entire professional career was one inning in right field and no at bats. He never touched the ball in his stint in the field.

For what it's worth, the stuff in the book and the movie is basically nonfiction used in a fictional manner, based on research done by Kinsella on Graham's life. The trip to Chisolm is one Kinsella took after becoming curious regarding Graham's entry in the Baseball Encyclopedia.

There was a front-page article in one of the local papers this week about a school breakfast program over the other side of town (ie the poor side).

Maybe I'm some kind of judgemental elitist snob, but I couldn't help wondering how many of the parents who can't afford to give their kids some goddamn breakfast in the morning always make sure they're stocked up on smokes.

Then there are the geniuses who qualify for the school breakfast (and lunch) program but who don't fill out the forms in the beginning of the school year. This means their kids are underfed, or living on sugar, while they are getting their cigs and alcohol. It also means that the school loses funding for teacher's aides because the need for aides is tied to how many low income students are attending the school.

OMG... while I enjoy watching CSI there is just so much excess explanation of shit. People that were halfway intelligent in the first season are like complete morons by the end of 2.

That's why I dropped Walking Dead. I wasn't liking the direction of the plot anyway. But Kirkman started doing some of the most insulting exposition I've ever seen. And then mentioned in the letter columns that it would just get bigger. As a service. Because the more readers they get, the higher proportion of idiots. He was very diplomatic with his pandering. But I'm not sticking around for it.

That's an old wives tale in my experience. No lobster or crab cooked in our home has ever screamed when we dropped it into the boiling water.

My mother persuaded a friend at a dinner party of that.

That can be a horrible catch-22 for some people, though. Just think of the social messages. You're a horrible person if you sign up for public assistance. But you're a horrible person if you let your kids miss out on public assistance. They can't win. And I knew people who were spending their money very sensibly and just didn't have enough for assorted reasons and they had been so conditioned by society to think of welfare recipients as scum that they just could not fill out those forms. Sometimes it's a pride issue. And sometimes it even becomes a moral issue. You've become a bad person who does society more harm than good and just leave the planet already. Not least because it bleeds over into the kids. Stories get out on the playground, and the students have absorbed the same messages. "They can eat or they can have friends. I have to pick one."

It's eerie how much this particular part of the discussion could be about my family in my mid to late teens. I had to forge the papers to get us on reduced lunches and then it took a good deal of begging and sometimes taking money from mom's purse to get the three bucks each my brother and I needed for breakfast and lunch for a week.

There are certainly folks who do act sensibly, and who are not welfare their entire lives, I was being quite broad with my brushstrokes. However, the schools issue the same lunch cards to the kids who receive the free lunch program as the kids who pay full so there is no way of knowing from the card. They've also taken steps so that kids who participate in the breakfast program, before school and after school programs are not broadcasted, for lack of a better word, as being low income.
Certainly kids do pick up the message, I remember the unspoken rule in elementary school that you didn't play with kids from the LaPierre neighborhood because they were poor and on welfare. I think that is going to happen anyway though.

Hi, everybody.

Hey, d00d.

@Dent - at my school, we use that card swipe method. I believe a lot of us have reduced lunches [I don't - I buy better tasting and less expensive frozen stuff, it's one of those stupid school lunch suppliers that claim to be healthy but the food is total shit].

Kids in my school usually don't get into cliques or whatever because they're poor.

I am truelly bored....I am watching the Celine Dion story on WE. Its pretty freaking creepy to see her seduce the old manager. And the night after she does it ...she calls her mom the next day to tell her. No clue how true that is...but man ...could you imagine her mom on that end of the conversation ?

It's hard not to keep those feelings.
