My complex office [dunno what you call the office for an apartment complex, so...] has an employee that makes very, very good cookies. Soft and hard at the same time!
Y'know what else is soft and hard at the same time?
Yes, my heart.

Indeed. Cook a man a breakfast fit for the gods, and he's yours until the stars go cold.
I've come to learn that.
When the mood strikes me.
Which is often.
The Fresh Prince with Shatner was fucking hilarious.
I liked when they were in jail.

Well, when it comes down to it. I believe I can draw a representation of a sphere pretty OK, but I let myself get lazy with formulas that are pretty important to understanding the relationships between shapes, and the more I get into stage drafting, and other kinds of drafting, I need to relearn all that junior high math, and take out that old TI calculator. If you're thinking in 3dimensions, you either learn the math, or have a really good swipe file... err... reference file. Maybe keep a few balls and 2X4s in your studio. Agh, the more I wanna have nothing to my name but a few books, some pens and paper, and a guitar, I realize how much other stuff it takes!
If you train your eye, there are things you can get away with, but it's always better to know more than less. Any myths about losing your voice, or being too mathematical or precise are just that, myths.

So I'm watching Rambo. Now, I know the people of Myanmar are probably not the tallest of people, but how much of a midget do you have to be for Stallone to tower over you?
It depends on how tall the box is that the special effects people provided Sly. Stallone is 5' 10", how tall are you?
mattx110
05-20-2008, 12:12 AM
Depends on what the goal of the process is.
I think the definition of "right" is the subjective part. And "right" was a stupid word. "Exact" is a better word. And again, what "exact" means depends on the goal.
In the example I gave, building a set, you need to be exact. You may be working with a carpenter you really trust so some sketches are loose, but at a certain point someone needs to know exactly what this thing is gonna look like when it's done or your actors are gonna be bruising knees.
This is what I get for going all Sith and speaking in absolutes.
The point is, the more information in the drawing, the better it will be translated. All that maths stuff helps here.

As good as a ruler and fine pencil, along with a legend of dimensions can give. So technically, digitally precise would be for the best.

In his elevator lifts, maybe. That's the height on Stallone's official bio. Just like Andre the Giant was nowhere near 7'4". Sly's closer to 5'7".
Easy way to check. Here's Sly and Hulk Hogan in Rocky III. Hogan is 6'4". Hogan has more than 6 inches in this pic.

Yeah, the Fixer keeps getting better. The last episode of the series gets a little bit overwrought, but aside from that, it's top-notch.
I really can't stand the actor they have playing Sam Tyler in the US series. Sam shouldn't look like more of a thug than Gene Hunt.
If you haven't seen them already, 'Edge of Darkness' (journalists vs unsafe nuclear reactors), 'Harry's Game' (cop goes undercover in the IRA) and 'GBH' (brutal psychological piece about local politics) are all top-notch miniseries'. All three have been around forever, but are well worth catching up with.
And if you're enjoying 'The Fixer' and 'Life on Mars', I have to recommend the series' which influenced them.
'Callan' - brutal, hard edged and nihilistic espionage series with Edward Woodward,
'The Professionals' - bad-ass macho thugs beating the baddies at their own game, and,
'The Sweeney' - starring John Thaw as Regan. Like Gene Hunt but not quite as big a cuddly teddy bear.
Not exactly MINI series, but what're you gonna do?

Saw Edge of Darkness, which gets pretty freaky, and is directed like a maze. Big fan of Martin Campbell and Michael Kamen (who did the music w/ Eric Clapton). Didn't see Harry's Game ever, but Murphy's law is pretty good. Your description of GBH seems good.

Love the composition on that piece (the guitarist), it's got a real sense of movement. You really capture that instant of mid-movement there.
I think the reason I like the Wolverine piece is that the method matches the subject. Carving out notches with a blade gives it a kind of sharp, high contrast, primitive look. Plus, the high contrast gives it the look of intense directional light, like he's just been caught in a flash of lightning.

Oh fuck, man. See 'Callan'. It's really downbeat, but fantastic. It's just the grinding oppression of being a killer for a morally ambiguous government. A really nice counterpart to the romantic spy adventure stuff.
GBH is a great series. Essentially the story of two people thrown together by outside forces who break themselves into pieces trying to destroy one another. Stars Michael Palin in a very straight, not at all funny role.

Heh. My freshman year in college the fashion for girls was to get the big, XXL athletic dept sweatshirts and wear them with black spandex tights.
I mean, what was the point of the spandex if they're just going to wear a potato sack over the top of it?
I liked that early '80s look with the big sweater of that type. Because sweatshirts don't tend to cling tantalizingly to certain areas.

I haven't answered the phone at my house without knowing who it was already in about 15 years.
That was my parents policy since as far back as I can remember.
My dad would sometimes answer the phone, but any of the rest of us waited for the answering machine and answered if relevant to them.
Now I don't have a house phone. And I answer my cell phone if it's called even if I don't recognise the number. Because for the most part, I can assume it's for me. (Occasional wrong number of course)

Sounds like a local fault, not the USPS. Maybe even the companies you're dealing with. It's easy to bitch about the postal service, but if you consider that most times, you can get something hand-delivered to any place in the country for under a dollar? Kind of amazing.
Under a dollar? Nay, not so. This was a book and DVD, not a credit card bill. These I paid more for, my friend, because they're slightly heavier and bulkier to carry.
I've had worse. This past semester, I ordered a couple CDs the week before spring break, so that I could listen to them on the way home. They never came. I expected 'em to be there after vacation (two weeks) and still nothing. It came a couple days after that.

This one is hilarious.
So in 2007, there was a Transformers convention exclusive, and it is this highly prized set of figures. Individual figures from the set go for upwards of $200 on Ebay. There is no other way to get these figures, they were limited in number and are completely sold out.
Cut to today, some Japanese site revealed that two of those exclusive figures are going to get a release, although some of the colors will be slightly different.
Cue nerd rage.

Well, when I buy something, I need to be able to interact with it somehow. Putting an action figure on the self, for me, isn't really interaction. I'm cool with folks who do(my friend Wes is obsessed with getting video game strategy guides that he never uses), but it's not my thing.

I look better in person than in my pictures, I think.
But I take horrible pictures.
I'm the opposite; I look better in pictures than in person. Which isn't to say I look good so much as in a good picture I'm "Ewww," while in person I'm the poster child for the need to reinstate ugly laws.
Yay!

Math and Physics rock!
And Chemistry. Don't forget chemistry.
We like things like this (http://scienceblogs.com/goodmath/2007/03/the_mapping_of_the_e8_lie_grou.php) (the picture down the page).
Also, we're into fractals, abstraction and 2/3-dimensional representations of 4 (or higher)-dimensional objects like the hypercube (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/22/Hypercube.svg/417px-Hypercube.svg.png) or a Klein bottle (http://www.sgocity.com/pix/klein_bottle.jpg).
Also of course things like the Mobius strip, which is best found in that issue of Promethea.
Etcetera.
All cool. It's when Em starts to say things like, "If you describe the human body using topographical geometry, the lungs, digestive system, and female reproductive system are technically on the outside of the body" that I start to tune out.
'Life On Mars'? See it now before the American version messes it up.

I also feel real bad for the real collectors during the 90's. Not only did they have to mess with the constant L&L knockoffs, they have to mess with the constant barrage of 10 issue series that are utterly worthless thanks to speculators.

Morning, people.
I look better in person than in my pictures, I think.
But I take horrible pictures.
I usually think the same. Mostly because people use bright flashes, which washes me out a lot and makes my hair look even thinner than it is.
Right now, I have this weird dull ache in the middle of my back. It's like my muscle is just on the verging of relaxing, but is holding onto it's tight bands for a while longer first. Feels like what happened to me right before another time when it was like someone slapped me hard in the back with the palm of his hand right before a great relaxing of muscles. I'm waiting for that to happen.
I've been noticing a pickup in the lot at work for the last three weeks. It tends to be in different spaces at different times of the day. On occasion a guy has been in the cab reading throughout the day. Just seemed like maybe he was living in the in the parking lot but I couldn't be sure. Today I found him asleep, wrapped in a blanket. He wasn't causing a problem but to deter others, and because I'm really wondering where he is 'doing his business' I did the tap on the window, move along bit.
Now I am feeling a tad guilty. I feel for folks in his situation but I can't have the parking lot becoming a campground.

I just watched Hercules in New York last week. It's an awesomely bad movie from 1969 with Arnold Schwarzenegger (with someone else dubbing (badly) his voice) in the role of Hercules and includes a fistfight with a bear. That is, the bear throws a right hook.
Anyway, in the movie Hercules arrives in New York (hence the title) by freighter. As soon as he steps off the ship he meets "Pretzie", a pretzel selling vendor who wanders the harbor selling pretzels. Pretzie is played by Arnold Stang, who at one point slips his pinky into his mouth while watching Schwarzenegger flex with his shirt off.
I'd imagine Fleet Week is something like that, but more graphic and with more bears.

I have been talking about this for years so it will be interesting to actually work at a company with it in place.

What does "measured by social and sustainability metrics" mean?
Being evaluated in the workplace on a social basis is something that I would, and do find bothersome. I ended up getting screwed over in my last job because I wasn't participating in the social atmosphere of the workplace despite my being damn good at doing the actual job.
The only people who should be evaluating my social skills are my therapist, family, and if I ever acquire any, friends.

So it'll be considered collectively or individually? I'm trying to figure how they would judge it individually.
In education they do a thing called PBE, or performance based evaluation. One of the categories that is standard is social interaction. "Establishes and maintains positive relationships with colleagues" for example is a common criterion. Add in four or five other categories and you have an entire section.
It's somewhat vague as to whether this refers strictly to professional relationships or professional and social relationships. My current supervisor interprets it as the former, my previous principal as the latter.
I don't do well in environments where the latter method is what is used.

Most of the measuring will be performed at the office level but individuals will get special recognition for participating and organizing community and environmental activities. They will be giving us time off to do these activities. We also get judged on whether we turn our computers off and follow the office's strict environmental policies. Our bosses are also supposed to be working with employees who drive on getting them out of their cars, mostly through setting up effective work at home arrangements and coordinating car pools.
Honestly this place would be a very hard place to work at for people who are not at least partly on board with environmentalism.

No offense to you or your boss or your company, because maybe I'm missing something, but that sounds like it'd be easy to manipulate and easy to bring charges of discrimination on.
I'd imagine that the father of three young kids has less time and energy to do charity work and the single guy has more. Should I be judged better because I don't have a family? Should he be pushed to spend more time away from his family than he already does?
And what community activities are judged as being worthwhile? Is there a scale? If I do a one day walk for cancer research or something, does that count the same as someone who protests a seafood shop for the same amount of time? If I'm already involved in my church, do I get a pass, and if I'm an athiest am I punished accordingly?
I'm a show-me-the-numbers type of guy, and I can't imagine the program not being abused to the nth degree.

That's why we get additional time off to be used to participate in activities during the day. So i don't see how this taking time away from our families since we would be using time we would normally be at work.
It is just a sign of my age that I both know about this movie AND know who Arnold Stang is. :frown:

I don't know why you are having such a problem with this. Wouldn't you rather have a company that is willing to work on life/balance than just the bottom line? Jeez, next you'll tell me they should cut our the 4 week vacation packages we get starting.
BTW, we grew 80% last year. We work hard when needed and they try to compensate us for that. This is a program employees WANT to do and i don't see how going to plant trees 3 times a year on a work day is an invasion of privacy.

If not voting for a candidate from the big two parties is being disillusioned, it's far too late for that. I've been disillusioned for close to a decade now.
I vote for the person I believe to be the best candidate for the job. I don't see either of the two major party candidates as fitting that description in the upcoming election, so I plan to look elsewhere. If I don't find someone better, I may come back.
For congressional elections, I'm definitely going third party. The Democrats in my state are much too conservative for me.
In my mind, nobody who votes is throwing their vote away. They're using it for what it's intended to be used for. It's those who are eligible to vote, but don't that throw their votes away.

This is a half truth.
Warren Buffett says supports both Clinton and Obama
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (Reuters) - Billionaire investor Warren Buffett said on Tuesday he supports both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama for U.S. president, and will continue to hold fundraisers for each of them until the Democratic Party candidate is set.
The Berkshire Hathaway chief told both Clinton and Obama he would back them before they launched their competing presidential bids, putting him in an awkward position once they both decided to run.
"I have been supporting both of them ever since. I will be very happy if either one of them is president of the United States," he said at a news conference in Switzerland, where he is seeking businesses for his investment company to acquire.
"I think they are outstanding candidates and both would make outstanding presidents," he said of the two Democrats competing to face Republican John McCain in the November presidential election.
Oregon and Kentucky are holding primaries on Tuesday, and after the results, Obama will likely be able to claim a majority of pledged delegates won in the lengthy state-by-state campaign. But Clinton has vowed to fight on until the last nominating contests are held on June 3.

Sweet sideburns there, Justin.
Sarah voted for Nyarlathotep once as a write-in.
True story.
There's no way the electorate will vote for a Black Pharaoh.
Note to self: remember this phrase.
It's "in like Flynn".
As in Errol.
In like Flint.
As in James Coburn.
But yeah, the Tasmanian Nazi also applies. Whatever floats your boat.

Holy mother of Jeebus!
That Captain America omnibus is OOGE.
You can read it, or you can use it for stunning charging rhinos.
It's multi-functional.

I am pretty sure SJSU does have classes.
You can look at fares here for caltrain

Oh, thanks. Ick, that's a lot. And I'd bet it'd be tiring to travel a while just for two classes each summer, too...

Yes, I am really lucky to have ended up here. The only detraction is the office is really crowded because we have grown so much. We may have to move.Nice to see things worked out so well.
In like Flint.
As in James Coburn.Nope. The phrase "in like Flynn" predates that movie by 20-odd years:

Good day, everyone.

Yeah, I know. But Doomy may prefer Coburn to Errol.
Coburn is kinda dishy.

Coburn is kinda dishy.I just figured she got it wrong because she's blonde.
In other news, apparently Errol Flynn died somewhere in my neighbourhood.
Unlike his son Sean, obviously.

It can also stop a bullet.
If only Cap had been interested in reading his own stuff, he'd be alive today.
