Morning people. It is suppose to be cooler today! yay. Mind you I'd rather have sun and heat than grey and dreary but 100f is too much. Today is suppose to be in the 80s. Perfect weather to do the shopping and mow the lawn.

Earlier in the week, they were projecting today to be hot, but now it's only supposed to be low 70s. Which is just fine. That's as warm as I can stand anyway.

And I avoid most pop culture, but I'm pretty sure this is an amusing headline : Ashlee Simpson Weds Fellow Rock Star

There was a photo in today's paper that looked like a Morna painting, but the online version has like 50% saturation for some reason.

The lower half is especially missing a lot of orange.

But most people here are more creative than me, so maybe it will still be apparent.

At 7AM, the ex calls to ask me something she doesn't understand about boys in general, and her current boyfriend in specific.

And then called for approximately the same thing at 9AM.

For the most part, yeah--the karaoke kind of sucked balls, though, in terms of organization.

You missed a spectacularly bad set of rap songs from the whitest white guys ever. It's a shame my joint never came up.

Sorry if it wasn't your friends' scene. I definitely, in a different situation, would have maybe hitted on the quasi-Tina Fey-but-not-quite-like-that Julie (maybe "vaguely-reminiscent-of-Tina-Fey Julie").

Pete Vonder Haar's review of Prince Caspian (http://www.filmthreat.com/index.php?section=reviews&Id=10966) explains very well what bugged the hell out of me about the Narnia books:

Which raises another issue, for while Lewis’ enthusiastic Christianity is less apparent in this film (though Aslan is still annoyingly pious, doling out character’s fates based on how convincingly they demonstrate their faith... in him) there’s a not-so-subtle undercurrent of the White Man’s Burden in these stories. Narnian folk are either bestial (centaurs, minotaurs) or coarse (dwarves), unable to work themselves into fighting shape until the ofay monarchy shows up. Once this happens, the badgers and Hottentots gleefully march off to their slaughter. In Narnia, it seems, the only beings that die are either furry or swarthy.

Royal
05-18-2008, 01:37 PM
what was the reason for the cops being called?

Well the first reason was we're too noisy. No harm no foul. The call must have put out after the Ruckus lap. So that was understandable.

Second one was about the sound system being too loud. While I can debate that it's kinda hard to hear the sound on the other end of the track, we stopped playing music anyway and only used sound for annoucements.

Third one was because the field lights were on and we were being noisy again So we shut off the lights and used flashlights and other handheld illumination equipment. The sound was turned off.

The final one was because someone was flashing light into houses and needed to be stopped. Plus, we were too noisy again. By this time it was 5:30 and no one wanted to play around. They either went to their tents and slept or left the area. From what i heard, no one messed with having a morning service and someone went home with a lot of free pastry.

I can sort of understand calling the cops here and there. But I would think that you'd have a little bit of understanding for a cancer walk.
Is it possible to love the narnia books and movies and not notice underlying themes? I've never noticed any white mans burden or anything like that in the books. When I read stuff like this or the hate for his dark materials in the other way I just see people digging up reasons to hate. You only get out what you put into it and if you want to find some slight in Narnia being too preachy you'll definitely find it. I never did though.

I was talking about this with someone yesterday. If you don't know who wrote the book and why, you're not going to catch the theological aspects, anyway. It's just another Hero's Journey story.

It's times like this I love being as shallow a person as I am. It's sooooo much easier to enjoy stuff this way. Maybe it's because I haven't read the books in ten years and my view of the world was different when I read them, but I honestly didn't catch the racism.

I feel like some sort of idiot now cause I've never once noticed the racism in lord of the rings or any of tolkeins other books.
I know where people are coming at with the religious stuff on narnia, but I just don't see how that effects anyone's enjoyment of the books. I see it can be a discussion point but I tend to try and ignore it because often instead of being a discussion point people get way to into it and spout offensive things about things that have nothing to do with the books/movies/songs whatever.

I read the series over and over as a kid. The Christian stuff went completely over my head (I was raised by atheists so no frame of reference), but the racism did not.

And the difference between Tolkien and Narnia is the difference between Eurocentrism and racism. Because there is a clear difference.

Granted, this is a different kind of racism, things like Sunflower, or the infamous "Coal Black" short from Warner Bros. It's a result of the basically accepted societal norms of the day, which doesn't excuse it, but it makes it less of a malicious, overt act. It feels like a cop-out to say it's a product of its time, but that is the best way to describe it. It's born more out of ignorance than out of fear and hatred.

How is that different from the Narnia stories, then?

The really significant difference for me is the fact that the Narnia stories are based around comparison. It's not the stereotypes so much as the emphasis on how inferior they are to (and thus also dependent upon) the heroes. Just like all those films set in 3rd world countries where no one can cure disease or feed the poor until some random white guy shows up.

yeah, i see early collections of the spirit and see ebony white and absolutely cringe and want to not read the new series because of it, but I have to remind myself that it was written at a different time.
The difference is to me, and I'm just opinionating here, is that in the ebony white case and with the 'sunflower' skit they were saying that 'this black character is obviously black and obviously only fit to be a servant." that's the times. I have to reread narnia and look at it from your perspective before commenting on it.

When things were written doesn't really change the fact that they contain racist material. The fact that Tolkein was writing the books in England in the 40s doesn't change the racist material in it. Just like a Japanese video game that basically uses a golliwog as a black caricature isn't any less racist because said Japanese programmer has only seen a black man in American movies. Now, it may not be done with hatred in the heart, but any kind of ethnocentrism is going to come down to some level of racism.

That's a 4 issue mini. If it finished, there might not be anything else out yet.

Somebody else here knows better than me though. I'm behind on new stuff.

Why does it have to be like that - it's retarded!

I read Ultimate Human, which I very much enjoyed BTW.

Then it is quite possible you will enjoy Ellis's Ultimate Galactus Trilogy thingy, which you can get in one reasonably priced bloody great hardback. (Note: skip over the Ultimate Vision bit in the middle, which is jammed in there for no good reason.)

Also, Millar's Ultimates are all well amusing.

Ok am I thick or what. I went to Marvel to see what comes after the Iron Man I just read and I can't for the life of me, untangle the twisted morass that is all those untertwining titles. I just bought the damn thing it was published in 2008 why can't I see it anywhere? I don't even know what string I'm on.

No wonder I don't get into super hero comcs.

Wasn't always this bad, but I dropped the capes and tights titles for a reason, I suppose.

I was happy with myB.P.R.D., DMZ, and Casanova this week. I actually looked through my first Previews in months; Drawn & Quarterly's releasing a new hardcover edition of Raymond Briggs' Gentleman Jim. Woo hoo!

Ultimate anything is certainly not the original form.

There's a trade paperback, Iron Man: Demon in a Bottle, which is the classic story of him being a drunkie. I'd go there instead to get a sense of what Iron Man is like.

There's also the Essential Iron Man if you want to read about his earliest adventures and the story the movie was based on. Though I'm not personally a big fan of them. I reread them before the movie came out though and it was interesting to compare.

Look at it this way: if you eat the fish depicted in that... picture, most of the "taste" has been processed and deep fried right out of it. So, it's like eating a piece of styrofoam, only deep fried and served lukewarm.

On second thought, just eat styrofoam. It's probably better for you than that slop.

Home is where I want to be
Pick me up and turn me round
I feel numb - burn with a weak heart
(So I) guess I must be having fun
The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky
It's ok I know nothing's wrong . . nothing

Hi yo I got plenty of time
Hi yo you got light in your eyes
And you're standing here beside me
I love the passing of time
Never for money
Always for love
Cover up + say goodnight . . . say goodnight

Home - is where I want to be
But I guess I'm already there
I come home - -she lifted up her wings
Guess that this must be the place
I can't tell one from another
Did I find you, or you find me?
There was a time Before we were born
If someone asks, this where I'll be . . . where I'll be

Hi yo We drift in and out
Hi yo sing into my mouth
Out of all those kinds of people
You got a face with a view
I'm just an animal looking for a home
Share the same space for a minute or two
And you love me till my heart stops
Love me till I'm dead
Eyes that light up, eyes look through you
Cover up the blank spots
Hit me on the head Ah ooh

I've always leaned that way and I've bought books in the past but I've never really sat down with them which is what I'm going to be doing now. I definitely know the difference between the real books and the ones there to make a buck.

Judika Illes is quite an authority that I'm reading up on now.

What are you doing to "maintain" it? All I ever do is rinse mine out and scrape off any lumps.

Well you cannot use any soap or hot water, and then I have a special brush for it. After it is clean you have to oil it up and then keep it in a dark, cold place.

Nice to be here hope you agree
Lying in the sun
Lovely weather, must climb a tree
The show has just begun

All the leaves start swaying
To the breeze that's playing
On a thousand violins
And the bees are humming
To a frog sat strumming
On a guitar with only one string

I can see them they can't see me
I feel out of sight
I can see them they can't see me
Much to my delight

And it seems worth noting
Water rats were boating
As a lark began to sing
The sounds kept coming
With Jack Rabbit loudly drumming
On the side of a biscuit tin

I can see them they can't see me
I feel out of sight
I can see them they can't see me
Much to my delight

Silver minnows were devising
Water ballet so surprising
A mouse played a daffodil
A mole came up blinking
Underneath an owl who's thinking
How he came to be sat on a hill

I can see them they can't see me
I feel out of sight
I can see them they can't see me
Much to my delight

I know you won't believe me
But I'm certain that I did see
A mouse playing daffodil
All the band was really jumping
With Jack Rabbit in there thumping
I found that I couldn't sit still
I just had to make it with them
Cause they played my kind of rhythm
And the bees hummed in harmony
And the owl played his oboe
Then the frog's guitar solo
It was all just too much for me

I know you won't believe me
But I'm certain that I did see
A mouse playing daffodil
All the band was really jumping
With Jack Rabbit in there thumping
I found that I couldn't sit still

Look at it this way: if you eat the fish depicted in that... picture, most of the "taste" has been processed and deep fried right out of it. So, it's like eating a piece of styrofoam, only deep fried and served lukewarm.

On second thought, just eat styrofoam. It's probably better for you than that slop.

Good luck with the wiccan thing. Be careful as well; do your research, if I may say. Had some intense experiences with my own practices in my native style, so, I backed off. Still dabble, but only for certain people.

pffft! voodoo. I use hot hot water all the time and only really have to heat and re-oil if i'm cooking anything wet. I store it on top of the stove which is gas so always warm and it's a bright kitchen. No problems ever.

I've had some very intense results doing tarot cards in the past. I always get irked when people buy decks for their friends or family. Tarot cards are like pets in a way. You don't choose them, they choose you.

I did a reading years ago for a co-worker. She worked in the human resources department of the hotel I worked at. Before I moved back here I did a reading where in the next year she would come into a lot of money and take an extended trip. She kinda laughed it off. Turns out about 8 months later the hotel where her husband worked (he was senior VP or something) was bought out and he received a nice severance package since they deemed his job redundant. She took a leave of absence from her job and they went on a very nice tour of Europe.

I've just had too many other experiences in my life that I can no longer go on denying.

With rifles and hatchets
Stinking like the living dead
Eatin' local fauna
Like there wasn't a tomorrow
As they fed how it bled, how it bled

Sacajawea is gettin' meager
Nickel dime, nickel dime, nickel dime
It's such a long road that we travel
Nickel dime, nickel dime, nickel dime

Causin' more commotion
With that steam locomotion
On the quiet country mile
Blisters by the fistfuls
'Til the foreman blows the whistle
And drinkin' whiskey all the while

Sacajawea is gettin' meager
Nickel dime, nickel dime, nickel dime
It's such a long road that we travel
Nickel dime, nickel dime

Get up on the chuck wagon
If your feet are draggin'
Get up on the chuck wagon
If your feet are draggin'
Get up on the chuck wagon
If your feet are draggin'-yeah!

Well they landed on Europa
And it's colder than Dakota
But they took the bull by the horns
For the frozen ocean
Foreman has himself the notion
"This ain't nothing we ain't done before!"

I don't say this nearly enough:

I have the absolute best children in the world.

Today I decided to clean our cockatiel, Apollo. I been meaning to for the past month but she laid another clutch of eggs and she has to sit on them for a week or so or she'll just keep laying. I took her cage apart and dragged it outside to really scrub it down without making a mess in the house. While I was doing that, I left them with the job of giving her a shower, a simple squirting with a spray bottle.

She fell right off her perch while they were wetting her. She's been having trouble keeping her balance lately but I chalked it up to her sitting on the eggs for so long. I sure as hell didn't expect this.

I picked her up and held in my hands. She just lay there, looking for all the world like a wounded wild bird. But I left her cage apart and sitting outside; I don't trust anyone in this neighborhood to leave it alone any longer.

Thing 1 took over holding her. He kept her safe and warm for the next 30 minutes while I scrubbed, rinsed and re-assembled her room. She showed no improvement.

We made up a little bed, stuffing some shavings into a small container that would leave her comfortable without straining her legs yet high enough to reach under if she needed to be picked up again. I made dinner, vacuumed, did dishes; we all took turns at keeping our eye on Apollo, petting her and calming her.

By bedtime, her breathing became labored. I honestly don't hold much hope for her lasting much longer. Yeah, I'm getting pretty fecking emotional. I've had her for a decade now; she's been part of our family since Thing 1 was a toddler. She's my middle 'child'.

While i was in my room talking to Momma about this, the Things went off to have one of their little 'meetings'. They do that when they wanna discuss something they don't want me to have any input on, usually a little secret or surprise.

They came back with this:

'Daddy, Granny and Poppy promised us a video game this week for having good grades on our last report cards. We're gonna tell her we want the money instead so we can take Apollo to the vet. She's more important than a video game.'

You tell me what 11 and 8 year old would pass up a video game over paying for a visit to the vet.

I ordered a lemonade in a thai restaurant in london, and got a 7up, then realized, I got a similar carbonated lemon-flavored drink another time I asked for a lemonade (but only saw the can the second time).

I figured some of our fellow travellers may have had a similar experience. It was a long shot.

Hey, I took a shot of the same view when we drank with Chris on our last visit. It looks all weird because I tried to do hand-held HDR.

I bet that's the same ship, too.

One time I ordered a Coke and the waitress was all "We have Pepsi. Is that ok?" I said it was (sorry Nowlin). Not exactly the same thing, but I trying to relate to your ordeal so you don't feel alone.

Yea, well, it's like that. Except I'm not sure they even bother with non-carbonated lemonade anymore. Anyway, it was more the event. The act of a guy going "yes, that's lemonade" while pointing at a 7 Up can. I might just be easily amused.

They have something called lemonade soda on the menu at one of the Vietnamese places I frequent. I wonder if it's just 7Up. I may have to order one now to find out.

Blergh. At least San Jose isn't being tossed around in a damn oven like the middle of last week.

I need to find some old clothes for use in painting... honestly, I don't get abstract paintings. They're just random brushstrokes...
